Sustainable Duke was established in 2004 to coordinate climate and sustainability efforts at Duke University. In 2007, the first Duke Climate Action Plan, which outlined a strategy for the university to become a carbon neutral campus by 2024, was implemented. Sustainable Duke merged with the Duke Carbon Offset Initiatives (DCOI), the first university-based carbon offset program in the United States, and the office helped with the development of Duke's Climate Commitment. In 2023, Sustainable Duke became the Office of Climate and Sustainability. This change connected several offices and departments such as Duke Forest, Duke Gardens, Duke Campus Farms, and the Nicholas Institute of Energy, Environment, and Sustainability. The office works to educate and promote engagement with sustainability and climate efforts and advance Duke's Climate Commitment.
