- Biographical / historical:
-
Duke Learning Innovation and Lifetime Education is a campus unit that offers teaching support and consulting for in person instruction as well as continuing and online education. DLILE was originally established as the Center for Instructional Technology (CIT) in 1999, as an outcome from the Strategic Plan for Information Technology and Learning. It initially functioned as a partner to faculty and administrative units in the application of technology to teaching and learning. Between its founding and 2022, DLILE and its predecessors reported to the Vice-Provost for Library Affairs. CIT was led by Lynne O'Brien between 1999 and 2013, and Shawn Miller from 2013-2017. In Fall 2017, CIT merged with Online Duke, an initiative to advance online teaching and learning, to form Duke Learning Innovation (DLI). DLI was involved in launching Coursera for Duke, developing curricula for Duke Kunshan University, and responding to the COVID-19 pandemic and subsequent pivot to fully online education. In Fall 2022, Duke Learning Innovation merged with Continuing Studies to form Duke Learning Innovation and Lifetime Education.
