Background

Scope and content:

The collection includes a scrapbook consisting largely of photographs which document the activities of the Club between 1949-1956, a photograph album of members' and former members' children and birth announcements, and some documents related to the activities of the club in the 1950s. Documents include the club's constitution, copies of diplomas given to members upon their husbands' graduation celebrating the contributions of the wives' to their husbands' studies, and meeting minutes describing event planning and other matters.

Biographical / historical:

The Duke Student Engineers' Wives Club was formed in 1949 for the wives of engineering students, to provide opportunities to participate in and benefit from college life, to maintain and cultivate good fellowship among its members, and to stimulate an interest in and service to the community. The organization held regular bi-monthly meetings, organized social activities and seminars for members and their husbands, ran a hot dog concession at the annual engineers show, and invited speakers from the University community to address the club.
