The Office of Government Relations is charged with representing the University in Washington, D.C. Scope and content:

This collection, spanning 1965-2015, contains memoranda, correspondence, and other papers pertaining to the Office of Government Relations. Most of the materials in the collection are from Eugene J. McDonald's tenure in the Office of Government Relations. Subjects include lobbying in North Carolina; RUN (Research University Network); Association of American Universities (AAU); NC Legislation; American Council on Education (ACE); Regan Economic Recovery; Research Legislation; National Association of Independent Colleges and Universities (NAICU); and Reauthorization of Higher Education Act.

Biographical / historical:

The Office of Government Relations is charged with representing Duke University in Washington, D.C., and supplying information on federal issues to the Duke community. The office addresses and monitors legislation on matters of interest to Duke University, its faculty, staff, and students. These matters include student and research funding, technology transfer and intellectual property rights, and policies on immigration.

Government relations merged with university relations in the late 1980s to form the Office of Public Affairs and Government Relations. With this, government relations at the local, state, and federal levels were spread among multiple offices. For a time, the Office of Federal Relations represented the university in Washington, D.C. on issues other than those related to health matters. In 2016, the Office of Federal Relations became what is currently known as the Office of Government Relations.

Acquisition information:
The Office of Government Relations records were received by the University Archives as a transfer in 1985 and 2022.
