Background

Scope and content:

Collection consists of letters written by Jeanne Kelly Massey and Linda Kelly to their mother, Margaret Kelly, during their time as students at the Woman's College at Duke University during the late 1950s and early 1960s. Letters discuss academic and social activities as well as sorority events and dorm life, dating, clothing and hairstyles of the time. Also included are letters from Jeanne for several years post-graduation, describing her life as a newlywed, mother, and teacher, and letters from Linda Kelly after she transferred to Texas Christian University in 1961, from her time stationed in Korea while serving in the American Red Cross Clubmobile, and from a year of international travel. Also included are a small number of photographs, negatives, and newspaper clippings, as well as fabric samples accompanying descriptions of homemaking and sewing projects.

Biographical / historical:

Jeanne Kelly Massey and Linda Kelly were sisters from Smithfield, N.C., who attended the Woman's College at Duke University during the late 1950s and early 1960s. Jeanne attended from 1956 to 1960, and upon graduation married William Massey III, a Duke University School of Medicine student. They subsequently had two children together. Linda matriculated at the Woman's College in 1959, but transferred to Texas Christian University in the fall of 1961. Upon graduation in 1963, Linda joined the American Red Cross Clubmobile Service and was stationed in Korea for one year, after which she spent a year traveling internationally, visiting Thailand, India, Iran, Egypt, Greece, Germany, Italy, Istanbul, Switzerland, Denmark, London, and France. She returned to the United States in December 1965, married Wavern Leroy Garner, and moved to Wisconsin.

The Jeanne Kelly Massey and Linda Kelly Letters were received by the Duke University Archives as a gift from Jeanne Kelly Massey in 2021.
