Tokio Kugimiya, a 1903 Trinity College alum, was a Japanese missionary and minister. This collection consists of correspondence discussing his missionary work, letter cards, and a silk bookmark with handwritten inscription in Japanese.

Background

Scope and content:

Collection consists of a typewritten letter from 1904 discussing Kugimiya's return to Japan during the Russo-Japanese War and includes a description of his missionary work in the Hiroshima area on additional carbon copy sheets; a four page letter sent from Osaka in 1921 relaying the news of the death of Bishop Walter Lambuth and discussing his continuing work as a Christian missionary; accompanying transmittal envelopes; 2 letter cards with images of Sapporo Shrine, Hokkaido and Toshogu Shrine, Nikko; and a silk bookmark with handwritten inscription in Japanese.

Biographical / historical:

Tokio Kugimiya, who is also referred to as Tatsuo Kugimiya, was born on April 20, 1872 in the Kitaamabe District of Oita Prefecture, Japan. He became an ordained Christian minister at the age of 27. After graduating from the Theological Department of Kwansei Gakuin, Kugimiya moved to the United States to attend Trinity College in Durham, North Carolina. He graduated from Trinity College in 1903 and returned to Japan where he performed his Methodist missionary work and served as a pastor in Hiroshima and Osaka. He was a presiding elder of the Hiroshima, Matuyama, and Kobe Districts. Kugimiya also authored Inoritsutsu ikiru taiken , published in 1932. Kugimiya died on September 13, 1947.
