Biographical / historical:

The Nicholas Institute for Environmental Policy Solutions was founded in 2005. With a mission "to help decision makers create timely, effective, and economically practical solutions to the world's critical environmental challenges," the institute worked to improve global environmental policies through research, engagement with policymakers, and highlighting critical environmental issues. It consisted of five core programs: Climate and Energy, Ecosystem Services, Ocean and Coastal Policy, State Policy, and Water Policy. The Nicholas Institute collaborated with other research projects such as the National Ecosystem Services Partnership, the Internet of Water Coalition, Illuminating Hidden Harvests, the Bridge Collaborative, and James E. Rogers Energy Access Project at Duke University.

In July 2021, the Nicholas Institute for Environmental Policy Solutions began merging with the Duke University Energy Initiative. As a result of the merger, the organization was renamed the Nicholas Institute for Energy, Environment & Sustainability in 2022. In its new formation, the Nicholas Institute has kept its original mission while also working to support Duke University's sustainability goals. The Nicholas Institute has continued its collaborative research efforts including assisting with the Duke Climate Commitment's development.
