Major subjects include student papers on philosophy; department business; and notes on Hegel, Descartes, Clarence I. Lewis, and the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation. The collection contains correspondence, student papers, departmental minutes, lecture notes, research notes, and grant proposals.

Biographical / historical:

Born June 20, 1918 in Roslyn, Wash., William Bernard Peach was educated at Whitman College (B.A., 1940), at the University of California, Berkeley, (1940-41), and at Harvard University (M.A., 1949; Ph.D., 1951). Peach came to Duke University as an instructor in the Department of Philosophy (1951-1952). He was an assistant professor (1952-1957), and associate professor (1957-1963). Peach became a professor of philosophy (1963) and an emeritus professor.

Peach received a number of awards and honors during his career. He was a Guggenheim Fellow (1957-58) and a Fellow of the National Endowment for the Humanities (1972-73; 1983). Peach received a grant from the American Philosophical Society (1958-59), and was awarded a Doctor of Humanities from Whitman College (1980). Peach became an emeritus professor of philosophy at Duke University.

Peach's writings include: (Editor), Illustrations on the Moral Sense, (1971); (Editor) Richard Price and the Ethical Foundations of the American Revolution: Selections From His Pamphlets, (1979). (Editor with D. O. Thomas), The Correspondence of Richard Price, Duke University Press, (Volume I,1983; Volume III, 1988). Peach was also a contributor to a number of philosophy journals.

Peach married Alice Mary Barber on December 2, 1940, and had four children.

Acquisition information:
The Bernard Peach Papers were received by the University Archives as a transfer in 1989 (A89-0050) and in 1992 (A92-27; A92-107).
