Abstract:
Sally Dalton Robinson, a white philanthropist and community volunteer, graduated from the Woman's College at Duke University in 1955. She has served on the Board of Trustees, committees, and program boards at Duke while also being active on advisory councils and committees in Charlotte, North Carolina. The collection consists of course syllabi and exams, correspondence, World War II military patches, photographs, and a "Putting Husband Through" (P.H.T.) diploma.

Background

Scope and content:

Collection consists of course syllabi and exams from Sally Dalton Robinson's time as a student at the Woman's College, some of which contain Robinson's handwritten notes. The collection includes correspondence from Duke University to Robinson, her parents, and Russell Robinson. The correspondence consists of mostly grade reports and a letter awarding a scholarship to Sally Dalton Robinson. Also contains military patches from World War II that were glued to the back of a calendar in 1944 by Jim Dalton, photographs, photocopies of clippings, and a 1956 "Putting Husband Through" (P.H.T.) diploma given to Sally Dalton Robinson from the Duke Bar Association.

Biographical / historical:

Sally Gossett Dalton, a white philanthropist and community volunteer, was born in 1934 in Charlotte, North Carolina. She and Russell Robinson married in 1953. She attended the Woman's College at Duke University where she majored in history and graduated in 1955. Sally Dalton Robinson remained involved with Duke University through her time on the Board of Trustees, committees, program boards, and the Commission on Memory and History. She served on the board for programs like DukeEngage and the Center for Documentary Studies. She participated in the founding of the Levine Center of the New South and the BRIDGE Jobs program. In 2009, Sally Dalton Robinson was inducted into the North Carolina Women's Hall of Fame and in 2013, she and Russell Robinson were awarded the John Tyler Caldwell Award for Humanities. In 2018, Duke presented her with the University Medal.
