Background

Scope and content:

Collection contains two scrapbooks created by Alice Schlueter (later Mrs. Don S. Packer) while she attended Duke University between 1941 and 1945. The scrapbooks are arranged chronologically, documenting Alice's student life in the Woman's College, and including related news clippings, cards, correspondence, programs, and ephemera she collected.

Biographical / historical:

Alice Hazel Schlueter Packer was born on 1923 September 28 in Morristown, New Jersey, to parents Rev. Edgar and Hazel (Schelp) Schlueter. Alice attended Duke University from 1941-1945. She lived on East Campus as a student at the Woman's College, and graduated Phi Beta Kappa with a degree in sociology in May 1945.

Alice married Don S. Packer (1917-1992) in 1946; the couple dated while she was a student at Duke and some notes from him are included in the scrapbooks. The Packers lived in Wichita, Kansas, and had four children. Following Don's death, Alice Packer moved to Dallas, Texas, in 2008. She died on 2018 July 18.
