The Students of the Caribbean Association (SOCA) was founded in 1991. In 2003, after a two-year break, the association was reorganized. The current mission of the group is "to explore the depths of the rich and shifting cultures of the West Indies. SOCA seeks to accomplish this mission by providing a space for the Duke community to celebrate and learn more about Caribbean culture." The organization hosts many events celebrating Caribbean culture and heritage, including Caribbean Awareness Week; Caribana, a festival of Caribbean culture; and J'ouvert, a festival that starts Carnival. The Students of the Caribbean Association has collaborated with numerous groups on campus, including the Black Student Alliance, Mi Gente, Hillel, and Diya. SOCA also was a member of Spectrum, an organization that served as a place for intercommunity dialogue.
