Abstract:
United in Praise (UP), formerly the Modern Black Mass Choir, is a student-run faith-based choir at Duke University. This collection contains materials related to United in Praise and some records of Duke Chapel's Black Campus Ministries (BCM). Materials consist of correspondence, meeting agendas and minutes for various committees, drafts of constitutions, member lists, and materials related to programming and outreach.

Scope and content:

Collection contains records related to the history, events planning, and operations of United in Praise. Records include correspondence, meeting agendas and minutes for various committees, drafts of UP's constitution and history, proposals, rosters, flyers, brochures, task lists, notes, and song lists and lyrics. The collection also includes materials for Black Campus Ministries such as correspondence, BCM's Clarion newsletter, organization flow charts, officer lists and descriptions, a Campus Minister report, and meeting agendas and minutes.

Biographical / historical:

United in Praise (UP), formerly the Modern Black Mass Choir (MBMC), is a gospel choir at Duke University. MBMC was founded in the mid-1960s through a local African American church in Durham, North Carolina. In 1972, MBMC was recognized as a Duke University student organization. During the 1997-1998 academic year, MBMC changed its name to United in Praise in an effort to increase diversity and reflect the organization's commitment to unity and diversity. UP performs and participates in events on Duke's campus as well as throughout Durham.
