Background

Scope and content:

This is a collection of zines made by the Duke University undergraduate students in the semester course of Comics and Zines: History, Theory, and Practice taught by Professor Bill Fick.

The collection is organized into the following series: VacZine, Lean Mean Zine Machine and Smitherzines: Lo-fi Literature to Blow your Mind.

The VacZine series is comprised of one clamshell box, one title page insert, and eight zines made by students in the spring 2021 semester course. Topics in the series include: COVID-19, isolation, chronic illness, transgender identity, Asian American identity, biking as a lifestyle, Durham Greenways, loss, grief, dreams, and Duke student life.

The Lean Mean Zine Machine series is comprised of one clamshell box, one title page insert and fifteen zines made by students in the spring 2023 semester course. Topics in the series include: AI, chronic illness, poetry, fanart, identity, hobbies, grief, and Duke student life.

The Smitherzines series is comprised of one clamshell box, one title page insert and ten zines made by students in the spring 2024 semester course. Topics in the series include: Korean nature and culture, music, identity, hobbies and interests, and Duke student life.

Biographical / historical:

ARTSVIS 207S: Comics and Zines: History, Theory, and Practice is a course in the Art, Art History, and Visual Studies department, taught by visiting professor Bill Fick, that focuses on comics, graphic novels, and zines. Students in the class produce a comic or zine. In 2021 the class produced eight zines collected together in the VacZine collection. In 2023 the class produced fifteen zines collected together in the Lean Mean Zine Machine collection. In 2024 the class produced 10 zines collected together in Smitherzines: Lo-fi Literature to Blow your Mind.

Acquisition information:
The Comics and Zines: History, Theory, and Practice student zines was received by the David M. Rubenstein Rare Book Manuscript Library as a gift from Bill Fick in 2022-2024.
