The scrapbook documents Nancy Watkins' first year at Duke University (1948-1949) and includes personal notes, invitations, newspaper clippings, and programs, particularly documenting her participation in the Duke Madrigals and her attendance and engagement with music, social gatherings, sports, dances, and performance programs at Duke. Also includes materials from Goon Day, including her hairbow and sign, as well as some clippings from Oxford High School, her alma mater.
Groups with documentation or printed material present in the scrapbook include: Duke YMCA ("Duke Doings" weekly calendars for October-December 1948 and January-March 1949); assorted Page Bills programs for different performances at Page Auditorium; Men's Glee Club; Student Government; the Neptunalia Ball; Duke University Symphony Orchestra; and others.

Nancy Watkins was born on February 25, 1930, in Oxford, North Carolina. She graduated Oxford High School in 1948 and Duke University in 1952 with a bachelor's degree in Music.
Nancy married Sebastian Christian ("C") Sommer on December 11, 1954, and moved to Winston-Salem. The couple had three children, and along with caring for her family, Nancy Watkins Sommer was an active Duke alumna and fundraiser, an involved community leader, and a female tenor in local choirs.
Nancy Watkins Sommer died in Winston-Salem on January 13, 2018.
