He was a co-founder and organizer for many early 20th century conferences and institutions in support of African Americans, including the NAACP. He was married twice, to Nina Gomer Du Bois (1871-1950), with whom he had two children, Burghardt (1897-1899) and Yolande Nina (1900 or 1901-1961), and to Shirley Graham Du Bois (1896-1977).
