Formal studio portrait of Nina Y. Du Bois as a young girl, in floor-length white dress and hair styled in a pompadour, standing by a plant stand. Early gelatin silver process, oval print mounted on dark grey thick card mount which is damaged. Debossed on lower right front edge: M. M. Mudge / Ironton, O. [Ohio]. No other markings.

Biographical / historical:

Born Yolande Nina Du Bois in Great Barrington, Massachusetts, she became known as Nina Yolande and is listed in the 1910, 1925, and 1930 censuses as Nina Y. Du Bois, with a birth year reported as 1900 or 1901. She pursued a career in education. She was pressured by her father to marry Countee Cullen, the poet, in 1928. They divorced in 1930, and she remarried in 1931 to Arnette Williams, with whom she had one daughter, Du Bois Williams, in 1932. Earning a Master's degree in teaching at Columbia University, Nina Du Bois settled in Baltimore with her daughter, teaching English and History. Du Bois and Arnette Williams divorced in 1936. She died in 1961 and is buried in Great Barrington.
