Scope and content:

The collection consists of a single autograph manuscript note to an unknown recipient which reads, "With Miss Rebecca West's compliments." On letterhead stationery: 15, Orchard Court. Portman Square.W.1., Welbeck 3606.

Biographical / historical:

Rebecca West was a prominent British writer and literary critic who published in many genres, including fiction, non-fiction, social and cultural criticism, biography, and journalism. She worked on behalf of the suffrage movement, and had a reputation as a spokeswoman for feminist and socialist causes. West traveled extensively and befriended many literary and political figures of her day. She had a son with the writer H.G. Wells. West was created a Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire.

The Rebecca West note was received by the David M. Rubenstein Rare Book Manuscript Library as a purchase in 2015.
