Scope and content:

Consists of documents, print materials, and audiovisual materials predominantly concerned with ecumenical and general advocacy work linked to social justice and human rights issues throughout Latin America, particularly in the context of repression under military dictatorships supported by the United States. These include: documents related to information gathering efforts by the National Council of Churches (NCC), largely reports by ecumenical delegations to Latin American countries and correspondence with affiliates in those countries; documentation and communications produced by precursors to the Washington Office on Latin America; publications of the NCC and the World Council of Churches (WCC) including partial runs of Christianity and Crisis and Background Information; books describing the role of Christian institutions in social justice activism within and across Latin American countries; conference proceedings; and materials related to the assassination and legacy of Salvadoran Archbishop Óscar Romero. Outside of Central America, the greatest emphasis is on Chile, with some materials relating to Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay, and Colombia. Additional topics well represented in this series include general human rights advocacy by nonprofits and religious organizations, notably the Office of the Anglican Observer, and the social, political, and religious history of the Dominican Republic.
