Peace Process, 1982-2007

Consists of reports, clippings, newsletters, proposals, memos, meeting notes, articles, "Dear Colleague" letters, and other assorted materials related to the transition to civil government as a result of accords between the umbrella guerilla group Unidad Revolucionaria Nacional Guatemalteca (URNG) and the Guatemalan government in 1994-1996. Major topics include the peace accords; the United Nations Mission for the Verification of Human Rights and the Compliance with the Comprehensive Agreement on Human Rights in Guatemala (MINUGUA); the Comisión para el Esclarecimiento Histórico (CEH), Guatemala's truth and reconciliation commission; and government efforts to bring the military under civil control. Additional topics include judicial proceedings stemming from acts committed during the decades of conflict that preceded the peace process as well as instances of witness intimidation by parties wishing to keep cases from coming to trial as well as the intimidation and abuse of refugees returning to the countryside from Mexico. Materials also feature several organizations and working groups including the IACHR, Human Rights Watch, Myrna Mack Foundation, LASA and follow-ups to human rights cases particularly for Myrna Mack Chang and Bishop Gerardi.
