School of the Americas (SOA), 1979-1999

Scope and content:

Contains enrollment lists, FOIA cleared documents, course materials, training manuals, reports, clippings, correspondence and other communications, conference materials, "Dear Colleague" letters, amendments, Congressional records, newsletters, Op-eds, and WOLA internal documents pertaining to the School of the Americas (now known as the Western Hemisphere Institute for Security Cooperation). The School of the Americas (SOA; sometimes referred to as the US Army School of the Americas, USARSA) was founded in 1946 and is located at Fort Benning, Georgia. Thousands of soldiers and police, mainly from Latin American countries, were trained at SOA including future military leaders and those accused of human rights abuses. Major topics include the legislative debate over keeping the school open, its human rights record, and human rights training.
