US Relations, 1995-2007

Scope and content:

Consists of drafts, resolutions, sign-ons and hill drops, briefs, reports, workshop files, press releases, meeting files, memos, reports, and other assorted materials on US-Cuba relations. Major topics include the US-imposed trade and travel embargo including the escalations of the embargo policy with the 1996 Helms-Burton Act (LIBERTAD), calls for its easement or removal by members of Congress, WOLA, and other organizations; the removal of restrictions on humanitarian aid to Cuba and travel to Cuba for US citizens; the efforts to open Cuba to US agricultural exports by farm lobbies; and Cuban links to terrorist activities after September 11, 2001 and arguments against these claims. Additionally included are a declassified 1962 Defense Department memorandum outlining the possible instigation of armed conflict with Cuba and declassified reports on the trial of anti-Castro fighter Orlando Bosch in Venezuela are included. Other topics include a conference on Cuba, a delegation trip, and other general information. WOLA staff who assembled and maintained these materials include Liah Rosenblum and Geoff Thale.
