US Relations, 1979-2004

Scope and content:

Contains reports; applications; memos; briefings; correspondence; government files including some declassified documents from the CIA and State department, Congressional debates, and military training files; meeting notes; and other assorted materials related to the United States and Guatemala. Topics frequently feature how the US was involved in Guatemala through military, politics, and economic matters. This includes direct military and economic aid, numerous and often substantiated claims of secretive involvement by the CIA in the training and operation of the Guatemalan military, Congressional financial and political support of the Guatemalan peace process, diplomatic delegations, and the US's multifaceted relationship with the Guatemalan military. There are also some files on the military training at the School of the Americas (SOA), by the CIA, and through the International Military Education and Training (IMET) program.
