Guatemala, 1974-2008
- Scope and content:
-
Consists of reports, correspondence, notes, memos, press releases and urgent actions, clippings, case files, conference materials, newsletters, "Dear Colleague" letters, printed materials, and other assorted materials pertaining to Guatemala. Materials cover the political and human rights situation in Guatemala from domestic and international perspectives. They relate to the conflict between guerilla groups and the government between 1960-1996, the peace accords, and the tenuous process of building civil society afterwards. Human rights abuses and other violations form a significant portion of the materials on Guatemala alongside the peace process. In particular, topics such as the abuses by forces linked to the Guatemalan military, including the rural Patrullas de Autodefensa Civil (PAC); assassinations of clergy and political figures; massacres; forced disappearances and torture of prisoners; and the so-called "death squads," are included, with prominent examples relating to Myrna Mack Chang (and the Fundacion Myrna Mack), the massacre at Xaman, Sr. Dianna Ortiz, and Bishop José Gerardi. WOLA staff that contributed materials include Adriana Beltran, Hugh Byrne, Rachel Garst, Susan Peacock, Bonnie Tenneriello, among others, appear in materials or on folders.
