Research Materials, 1968-2016
- Scope and content:
-
The Research Materials series includes materials Wynter used for reference in her writings, teaching, and other activities. Included are books owned and annotated by Wynter, copies of works including Wynter's writings, and files of published and unpublished materials compiled by Wynter. Included are photocopies of published works, especially books and newspapers, in whole or in part and sometimes annotated; unpublished materials, such as dissertations and typescript drafts, sent to Wynter from others; and other materials. Topics included in this series reflect Wynter's wide-ranging interests and reading habits, and cover subjects she included in her writings and teaching. Especially well-represented topics include Black Studies, Black and African peoples and culture, Bartolomé de las Casas, Christopher Columbus, Spanish Golden Age theatre, perceptions of race in the United States, evolution, economics, literary criticism, language, and many others. Writers well represented in this series include Aimé Césaire, Martin Heidegger, Frantz Fanon, Jacques Derrida, Charles Darwin, C.L.R. Demetrius Eudell, Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel, Lope de Vega, Karl Marx, Joyce King, and many others.
- Processing information:
-
When first received by Rubenstein Library, materials were not grouped into clear series, and significant portions were unfoldered. Wynter's original folders were often unmarked, and contents were often not clearly identified as one work, course, or topic. Research materials are also present throughout all other series.
Many materials in this series are photocopies of published works. For unmarked photocopies, title and publication pages were retained and other contents often discarded. Widely available publications, such as the New York Times, present in whole, without markings or identification of particular sections of interest, were discarded.
Unfoldered materials, folders without titles, and folders containing very few materials were often combined and given titles during processing.
