Vice-Chancellor for Data Processing records, 1977-1982

The collection documents the records of the office of the Vice Chancellor for Data Processing for the years 1977 through 1982. The bulk of the materials in the collection pertain to the Administrative System Planning Study, a project that studied the effects an automated computing system would have on the accuracy and efficiency of data processing at Duke. Materials include the final project report as well as drafts tracking the development of the project as well as notes and correspondence from members of the project team. The collection also includes interviews the committee conducted with Duke employees across a wide range of departments and external studies of information management at Duke. The Administrative System Planning Study series contains materials related to the report. They include a copy of the final report and several drafts of the report including notes and revisions. This series also contains two 1982 editions of The Chronicle announcing the institution of a new data processing system on campus. The Project Materials series contains meeting minutes from the Administrative System Planning council, papers as well as correspondence and notes from three members of the committee, Vice-Chancellor Mel Ray, Joe Kuran and Jim Prestwood as they worked to develop the project. These materials also include analyses of the research materials used in the report. The Research Materials series includes information the committee gathered while preparing the report. These materials include 15 interviews with employees from many departments about the current data processing environment at Duke. Interviewees included President Terry Sanford, Chancellor A. Kenneth Pye and Provost F. Cleaveland. Research materials also include the final copies of automation reports completed by IBM Corporation and Hay Associates on the existing systems and the potential effects of automation. Also included is a 1980 issue of IBM Corporation’s magazine, Prospectives in Computing featuring an article about the academic applications of computing at Duke.

Founded in 1864, the J. Walter Thompson Company (JWT) is one of the oldest and largest enduring advertising agencies in the United States. It is headquartered in New York. Lee Pavao was an advertising executive who served in a number of JWT offices before becoming President and CEO of JWT Brazil. The Lee Pavao papers include advertisements and advertising designs, clippings, correspondence, meeting minutes and planning documents, photographs, presentations, reports, slides, speeches and other materials relating to Pavao's career, primarily in Latin American offices in Brazil and Peru. Project ABC (A Better Chance) Duke University Program records, 1966 - 1971, bulk 1966-1969

Project ABC (A Better Chance) began at Dartmouth College in 1964 as a summer program to prepare academically-gifted, underprivileged, and minority students to attend independent college preparatory schools. From 1966 to 1969, Duke University operated Project ABC summer sessions for boys with the goal of easing the transition from public school to private school. Records contain reports, financial materials, and correspondence generated or maintained by Project ABC at Duke University. The bulk of the collection consists of student applications to the ABC program and prep school progress reports. Materials range in date from 1966 to 1969.

The Woman's College was established at Duke University in 1930, as a coordinate to Trinity College for men. As a coordinate college within Duke University, the Woman's College fostered a community that allowed for shared university faculty, curriculum, and educational facilities, while giving women an opportunity for leadership through their separate student government, social standards committees, and judicial board. It was merged with Trinity College in 1972. The collection includes university administrative records, correspondence, reports, memoranda, minutes, course schedules, statistics, handbooks, newsletters, calendars, financial information, photographs, audio recordings and other materials. Documentary photographer and instructor based in Petaluma, California; died in 1999. Collection features 167 black-and-white prints of documentary photographer Camhi's work on five projects: ADVantage, a series of portraits of individuals who have written personal want ads; Espejo and Farmworkers, which explore Mexican American labor activism and the lives of undocumented immigrants; Jews of Greece, portraits of Jewish people living in various places in Greece; and The Prison Experience, which documents inmates,their families, and staff of the California State Prison at Vacaville and their answers to the question Camhi posed to them about what they would like people to know about life in prisons. The gelatin silver prints range in size from 8.5x13.5 to 10.25x13.25 inches; most are in 16x20 inch mats. The collection of prints is accompanied by approximately five hundred original negatives and slides, many featuring Camhi's own family as well as several photographic projects not represented in the prints series. Acquired by the Archive of Documentary Arts at Duke University.

The Informer Group was a publishing company for African American newspapers in the U.S. southeast, based in Houston, Tex. The advertisement appeared in v. 205, no. 1 (Oct. 1, 1943) issue of Printers' Ink publication and proclaimed "Largest Negro Circulation in the South" to encourage mainstream advertisers to place ads in the Houston Informer and other Informer Group newspapers. The Wayne P. Ellis Collection of Kodakiana spans the dates 1886 to 1989, and was created by Mr. Ellis over the period of nearly four decades. Whereas many photographic collectors concentrate on cameras and photographs, Ellis emphasized advertising and marketing material. As a consequence, the collection is especially rich in print advertisements for Eastman Kodak products that were published in general interest periodicals beginning in the late 19th century. More unusual items are the product catalogs, how-to manuals for both amateur and professional photographers, serial publications for salesmen and photographers, and a variety of marketing and promotional items. There are several scrapbooks of advertising materials with considerable marginalia. The collection also includes training manuals and other publications for Kodak employees. In addition, many items in the collection deal with various aspects of the corporate history of Eastman Kodak from its earliest years up to the mid-20th century.

Includes photographs of Pepperidge Farm Stuffing and Pepperidge Farm Party Rolls store displays; a display sign for Pepperidge Farm White Bread; color and newsprint proofs for White Bread and Rye Bread; as well as books of prize options for company promotional offers. Samuel Sewall was a judge, businessman, and printer in the Province of Massachusetts Bay. Collection comprises an affidavit sworn by Susanna Ramer before Samuel Sewall, testifying "that going up into her Garret this Monday Morning to call her Negro Alexander, she found Anne Staples Servant Maid of Samuel Eaton, in Bed with the said Alexander, which was a great surprise to her, not knowing that such an one was at all in the house. Sworn March, 16 1713 in presence of Anne Staples...." With attestation in a different hand, reading "April 10 1713 Sworn in Court at Boston Att. Davenport."

The Dayton Company, founded in 1902 in Minneapolis, Minn., was the predecessor firm to the Target Corporation, one of the largest retail chains in the United States. The Dayton Company Advertising Scrapbooks collection spans the years 1904 through 1968 and consist of 509 bound scrapbooks of newspaper advertisements, fliers and circulars for the Dayton department store chain in Minneapolis and St. Paul, Minn. and Rochester, N.Y., as well for several of Dayton's competitors, affiliates and subsidiary department and discount stores, including B. Dalton Bookseller, the J.B. Hudson and L.S. Donaldson stores.

Collection of black and white glossy photographic prints of Afghanistan, taken by an anonymous photographer during the Anglo-Afghan War most likely during the Mamund Valley hostilities of 1897. Prints are mounted on cardstock, and collection includes the portfolio in which they were originally housed. Most have captions with location or subject, either typed or hand-written; a few are dated 1897. Images feature British Army military camps, landscapes, and groups of officers. Acquired as part of the Archive of Documentary Arts.

The LeRoy T. Walker Africa News Service Archive is an extensive resource file assembled by Africa News Service (ANS) over the course of two decades in support of its news gathering efforts about Africa-related issues and U. S. foreign policy towards Africa. The collection spans the years from approximately 1960 to 1995, with the bulk of the materials dating from 1978 through 1994. Newspaper clippings, magazine articles, press releases, newsletters, brochures, and reports comprise the collection. Much of the material is gathered from mainstream media sources and government documentation in the United States, Europe, Africa, and other parts of the world. In addition, the collection includes significant resources from alternative, minority, and special interest presses world-wide that may be difficult to locate elsewhere. The archive contains scarce and difficult-to-locate materials such as numerous publications produced by non-governmental organizations and grass-roots/community groups that are/were involved in efforts related to independence movements, economic development, and human rights issues in Africa.

The J. Walter Thompson Company (JWT), founded in 1864, is one of the oldest and largest enduring advertising agencies in the world. It opened its first international office in London in 1899, and by 1930 the agency had established offices in some 30 countries. At present, JWT manages offices or partnership arrangements in approximately 90 countries. The J. Walter Thompson Company (JWT) International Advertisements Collection spans the years 1900-2004 and consists primarily of print advertisements, along with some transparencies, photocopies of advertising, and other collateral material that document some of JWT's international advertising campaigns through the 20th century. Clients include a variety of local, national and multinational commercial firms, as well as government institutions and public service organizations. The holdings of the collection are uneven, with the bulk of the advertisements dating from the mid-1960s up to about 1990. There are limited early advertisements from Chesebrough-Pond's, General Motors, and other clients dating from the late 1920s and early 1930s in print and on microfilm from the various offices established during those years. There are almost no international advertisements from roughly 1933 to the middle of the 1950s. The United Kingdom, the British Commonwealth countries, and Latin America account for most of the advertisements from the mid-1950s to the late 1970s. While the holdings since about 1980 are much larger than earlier holdings, they are by no means complete, and vary substantially from office to office. Key multinational clients represented in the collection include Chesebrough-Pond's, Eastman Kodak, Ford, General Motors, Kraft, IBM, Pepsi, R.J. Reynolds, and Unilever. English translations of foreign-language advertisements are often provided by JWT's Asian and Pacific Offices. European and Latin American Offices provided translations far less frequently. Advertisements for members of the British Commonwealth are generally available in English only or in both English and the local language. Spanish-language advertisements produced by JWT offices in the United States, intended for the domestic Spanish-speaking population as well as for Latin America, may be found in the J. Walter Thompson Company Domestic Advertisements Collection.

The images convey complex themes of patriotism, Christianity, masculinity and feminity, and other iconographic expressions of "Middle America" culture. Acquired by the Archive of Documentary Arts at Duke University.
