Meinrad Craighead (1936–2019) was an award-winning artist and writer whose works focused on humankind's relationship with God. She had lived and worked around the world, but eventually settled in New Mexico in the 1980s. The collection includes letters; photographs; exhibition catalogs and publicity; public response to her poems and books; research and notes on mythologies, art, and nature; and other personal materials from her life. The materials largely date from the 1960s through the 2000s, covering her scholarship in Europe, her time in England as a nun in Stanbrook Abbey, and the years following her return to New Mexico. Includes Craighead's prayer books and psalters, some dating from the early 1900s, as well as some copies of her own publications and artwork. Acquired as part of the Sallie Bingham Center for Women's History and Culture.

Tom Rankin is a documentary photographer, filmmaker, folklorist, professor of art and documentary studies, and former director of the Center for Documentary Studies at Duke University. The collection consists of 147 black-and-white and color photographs documenting the American South and China, as well as supporting materials for Rankin's documentary projects. Photographs from the South focus on religious sites, rituals, and communities in the Mississippi Delta region, and includes Southern landscapes as well as portraits of individuals, including Mississippi writer Larry Brown. An additional documentary project from 2016 took Rankin to China, where he photographed semi-rural landscapes, often taken with high-rise buildings in the far distance or adjacent to industrial structures, as well as bridges and rivers, markets and live fish vendors, and a few street scenes. Finished prints range from 8x11 inch contact prints to 11x14, 16x20, and 20x24 large-format prints. Supporting materials include manuscripts, publications files, and two films, all deriving from Rankin's career and documentary practice. Includes a digital audio recording of a talk by Rankin at the exhibit opening of his work, "Near the Cross: Photographs from the Mississippi Delta." Acquired as part of the Archive of Documentary Arts at Duke University.

The London Office first opened in 1899 and reopened in 1926, and was JWT's first international office as well as the first international office of any American advertising agency. Collection consists of binders of standard stationery forms authorized for use by JWT officials, departments and subsidiaries. Marcia M. Mathews (1904-1990) was an art historian and author residing in Durham, North Carolina. Collection comprises materials relating to two research projects conducted by Mathews: one on Roger Fenton, lawyer and early English photographer; and a later project on African American sculptor Richmond Barthé. The Fenton series includes letters (1940s-1950s) from Fenton descendants, many of which comment on the aftermath of the war; images of the family home, Crimble Hall in Rochdale, England; photographs of Fenton and his family (1860s); and modern copies of his own photographs (1850s). The Barthé papers consist of a draft biography by Mathews, and 134 photographs of his sculptures and other artwork, as well as early portraits of Barthé and his family, and were acquired by the John Hope Franklin Research Center for African and African American History and Culture. Although Barthé had relationships with men over his lifetime, the biography appears to make no overt mention of his sexuality. The collection also includes a large scrapbook for the year 1939 containing U.S. news stories and articles about the war and on Fascism in the U.S.

When ALFA disbanded in 1994, the archival collections and the bulk of the periodicals collection were transferred to Duke's David M. Rubenstein Rare Book & Manuscript Library. The book collection and the remaining periodicals stayed in Atlanta, with books relating to feminist theory going to Emory University and the rest to a community library. The ALFA Archives and Periodicals Collections that have been transferred to Duke are an incredibly rich source of information about feminist and lesbian activism and communities, especially in the Southeast, from the early 1970s to the present.

Olive Pierce (1925-2016) was a documentary photographer based in Massachusetts and Maine. The collection comprises several hundred black-and-white photographic prints taken by Pierce over her long career. The earliest images (1960s) feature landscapes and individuals in Maine, a subject Pierce returned to throughout her life. Other subjects include: political protests in Cambridge, Massachusetts and life in the Jefferson Park neighborhood in Cambridge during the 1970s; high school students in Cambridge (1980s); the lives of Iraqi children in war zones in 1999 and 2003, and protests in the U.S. against that war. Also included are print publications featuring Pierce's photographs; publicity for exhibits and lectures; Pierce's 1987 guide to teaching photography; a video on DVD and audio lecture about her work; some correspondence; unpublished book mock-ups and a memoir/diary; a self-published illustrated partial memoir (2014); approximately 2557 film negatives; and about 40 slides featuring images of her early life and family. Walter J. Taylor papers, 1934-2000

Walter J. Taylor (1934-2002) was a Black man from California who was incarcerated multiple times from the 1950s through the 1970s, including a period at San Quentin and Folsom prisons (1968-1973). During this latter period in jail, Taylor founded the Sisters of Motivation and the Community Concern for Prisoners organizations to help Black Americans convicted of crimes. Collection consists largely of materials from Taylor's time in prison and later as a community activist in Berkeley, California. Most of the materials comprise Taylor's incoming correspondence during his incarcerations in the 1950s through the 1970s, which includes letters from a variety of people, especially women participating as pen pals in the Sisters of Motivation organization. Other frequent writers are Taylor's wives, girlfriends, family members, and community organizations that he had contacted regarding his imprisonment and the general condition of Black men in prison. Other materials include personal items documenting Taylor's life, as well as writings and creative works by Taylor. Acquired as part of the Human Rights Archive at Duke University.

Hunger USA was an NCNW program that began in 1968 and worked to alleviate hunger, malnutrition, and food insecurity in Mississippi and Alabama by establishing community-run food centers and farms. Collection includes circular letters, leaflets, and brochures sent by the NCNW to raise awareness about hunger and malnutrition in the Deep South and NCNW efforts to alleviate it. Topics include Greek literature, especially poetry; Greek philosophy; and archaeology in Greece; specific topics relate to Oenanda, an ancient Greek city in Turkey, to the writings of Xenophon, Diogenes, and the poetry of Archilocus. The Department of Aesthetics, Art, and Music was established at Duke University in 1942. In 1960, the Department of Music was recognized as an independent department, and Dr. Allen H. Bone was appointed the first Chair. The department moved into the Mary Duke Biddle Music Building when it was completed in the 1970's. The bulk of the Dept. of Music records consist of publicity documents including programs, press releases, and calendars, for various Dept. of Music events. There are also documents regarding the renovation of the facilities, clippings, posters and general records for the department.

Collection consists of over 1100 black-and-white and color exhibit prints representing the work of over 50 South African photographers who documented conditions during and after apartheid, from about the 1940s to 2013, with most dating after 1960. Arranged in five series representing projects curated by documentary photographers Alex Harris, Paul Weinberg, and others: Beyond the Barricades, The Cordoned Heart, Then and Now, Underexposed, and The Other Camera. There is also a series of work by Jeeva Rajgopaul, and a series of Staffrider digital materials. Set in rural and urban South Africa, the images portray political rallies; protests; forced removals; funerals; social gatherings such as dances and concerts; work and domestic life; the life of the elderly, the migrants, and the impoverished; and labor organizing and strikes. There are many portraits of individuals of all races and classes, well-known activists and politicians, as well as countless ordinary South African citizens. Many of the photographers were members of Afrapix, a collective photography agency engaged in documenting the anti-apartheid struggle. There is a small amount of printed material, as well as a selection of digital image files and a digital audio file of an exhibit talk. American retailer founded 1886 in Chicago, Ill. Consumer Information Services produced a series of instructional filmstrips and booklets on a range of home improvement projects. Consists of two boxed filmstrip series: Let's Decorate the Bathroom; and Your Space Age Kitchen. 35mm filmstrips are accompanied by reading scripts and handout booklets intended to instruct homeowners on tips and techniques for designing, planning, repairing and remodeling kitchens and bathrooms, with suggestions for electrical appliances and furnishings. The Duke Vigil was a peaceful demonstration, sparked by the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., that occurred at Duke University in April 1968. The Vigil involved students, faculty, and non-academic employees of the university and called for racial equality and improved wages for hourly workers. Barry Sharoff organized publicity for the Duke Vigil Strategy Committee. The collection includes fliers, newspapers, press releases, statements, notes, correspondence, and publicly distributed materials regarding the Duke Vigil gathered by Barry Sharoff in his role in charge of publicity for the Vigil, as well as materials related to the 20th anniversary of the Vigil in 1988.

Project ABC (A Better Chance) began at Dartmouth College in 1964 as a summer program to prepare academically-gifted, underprivileged, and minority students to attend independent college preparatory schools. From 1966 to 1969, Duke University operated Project ABC summer sessions for boys with the goal of easing the transition from public school to private school. Records contain reports, financial materials, and correspondence generated or maintained by Project ABC at Duke University. The bulk of the collection consists of student applications to the ABC program and prep school progress reports. Materials range in date from 1966 to 1969.

Collection comprises a large photograph album likely created by an African American soldier serving in Vietnam. There are 268 uncaptioned black-and-white and several color photographs ranging in size from 2 3/4 x 3 1/2 to 3 1/2 x 5 inches, along with 15 souvenir postcards. Images primarily feature informal shots of African American and white servicemen in camp and off base, though few show the races mingling. There is also a series of well-executed portraits of individual soldiers, white and black. The photographer took many images of U.S. Army camps and air bases, army personnel and vehicles, street scenes from Saigon and smaller villages, and took numerous snapshots of local citizens, chiefly women and children. There are a handful of shots showing bombing raids and cleared or destroyed jungle areas. Overall, the images offer a wealth of details about the Vietnam War from a variety of viewpoints. Acquired as part of the John Hope Franklin Research Center for African and African American History and Culture.

The Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC) played a major role in the American Civil Rights Movement during the 1960s; its first major photography exhibit was titled "NOW" and opened in New York City in July 1965. Collection consists chiefly of 277 black-and-white photographs in sizes ranging from 2 1/2 x 3 1/2 inches to 16 x 20 inches, taken by SNCC photographers; a selection of these was used in the SNCC exhibit. Also included are paper records such as correspondence, fliers, brochures, and an exhibit layout diagram. Photographers whose work has been identified in the collection are: Joffré Clarke, Bob Fletcher, Danny Lyon, Fred DeVan, and Tamio Wakayama. The images were chiefly taken in Mississippi; other locations include Georgia, and possibly Alabama and Arkansas. Subjects center on conditions for African Americans in the South, voting rights campaigns, and civil rights marches and rallies; includes images of the 1964 Democratic National Convention, the Mississippi Freedom Party and its own Freedom Vote convention, the Selma-Montgomery March, and large rallies in Washington, D.C. Several images show burned-out buildings and cars, and harassed and bloodied demonstrators. People who have been identified in the photographs include Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Bob Moses, and Fannie Lou Hamer. Acquired as part of the John Hope Franklin Research Center for African and African American History and Culture at Duke University.

The Duplex Advertising Company. Billboard Images and Records spans the period 1964-1993 and documents the outdoor advertising work of this company in the central Texas area, primarily through photographs, negatives and slides of billboards. Many of the images are in color. A large number of the images are of national campaigns advertised in central Texas, as well as billboards, signs and posters of local Texas business services. In addition, a handful of articles written by R. V. Miller, Jr. for a number of publications, as well as other printed material and miscellaneous items from the Duplex Advertising Company, are present. Some of these articles, along with the images themselves, provide examples of commercial art and design in the outdoor advertising arena. The collection includes outdoor advertising images from national clients such as Kentucky Fried Chicken, Chevrolet, Coca Cola, Coors, Wendy's, Hardee's, and Taco Bell, and Texas clients such as Lone Star and Pearl beers.

This collection of 166 black-and-white inkjet 13x19 inch photographs by Glenn Scarboro explores through street photography, landscapes, and portraits the social life and culture of southern Virginia in the 1960s and 1970s. About half of the photographs were taken in Danville, the photographer's hometown, while other images were taken in Richmond, Blacksburg, Roanoke, and other towns of the region. A dozen or so photographs were taken in other states such as Georgia and North Carolina, and there are a few from Rhode Island and New York. The street scenes in Danville and other towns include images of white and African American residents, small businesses, houses, and churches; rural themes include horse shows. county fairs, and country landscapes. There is also a series of family portraits taken in the 1960s. Collection includes one handmade photobook by Scarboro containing eleven photographs and handwritten text. Acquired as part of the Archive of Documentary Arts at Duke University.

Kenneth Hubbard (1942- ) is an avid collector of United States campaign memorabilia and is also a Duke alumnus (T. 1965) and former Duke University trustee. The Kenneth Hubbard Collection of Presidential Campaign Ephemera consists of printed and artifactural memorabilia from assorted presidential campaigns, dating largely from the late nineteenth century through the present. Items are chiefly relating to the Democratic and Republican political parties, with some materials from the U.S. Socialist Party and the Prohibitionist Party. Duke University's Nicholas School of the Environment traces its beginnings to the founding of the Duke School of Forestry in 1938. In the 1990s two other entities, the Duke Marine Laboratory and the Duke Department of Geology, were combined with Forestry to form the Nicholas School. The Records of Duke University's Nicholas School of the Environment, 1916-ongoing, contain materials created from the school's inception as the Duke School of Forestry (1938) through all its subsequent names: the School of Forestry and Environmental Studies, the School of the Environment, and the Nicholas School of the Environment and Earth Sciences. The collection also includes material about the history of Duke Forest and its use as a teaching and research facility. The earliest materials comprise the papers of Clarence F. Korstian, first director of the Forest and first dean of the School, including his correspondence, early reports about the Forest and the School, and his involvement in the Ecological Society of America, the North Carolina Forestry Association, and the International Union of Forest Research Organizations. The bulk of the collection consists of the School's general administrative records, including annual reports, admissions records, enrollment statistics, information on degrees granted, faculty history and meetings, and surveys and meetings of the School's alumni. Visual materials include posters, color and black-and-white photographs, negatives, slides, and digital photographs that document the School of Forestry and the Duke Marine Laboratory.

Locations include Harlem, Manhattan, the Lower East Side, and Coney Island. There are also photographs of people in Haiti. and a few from India and Mexico. Most of the unmounted gelatin silver prints measure approximately 11x14 inches, with several larger prints. Acquired as part of the Archive of Documentary Arts at Duke University.

Hubert H. and Leona T. Hayes were actors, authors, and partners in the founding and production of the Mountain Youth Jamboree music and dance festival in Asheville, N.C. (1940s-1973). Collection comprises personal and business correspondence; plays, stories, articles, and minstrel scripts written by Hubert Hayes and others, as well as publicity, ephemera, production records, and photographs relating to the Asheville, N.C. Mountain Youth Jamboree (1940s-1973), to programs at Asheville's City Auditorium; and to the production of Hayes' outdoor drama about Daniel Boone, Thunderland, and plays such as Tight Britches. There are also photographs, chiefly black-and-white, of family and friends, actors in blackface, the Trinity College (Durham, N.C.) football team in 1922 or 1923, author Thomas Wolfe, 1937, and entertainers of the time. Other materials include a photograph album of Hubert's youth (1920s), and many scrapbooks documenting Humbert and Leona's theater and entertainment work, and Leona Hayes's career and her close association with Duke University Libraries and its director, Benjamin Powell. The materials speak to the history of Asheville, N.C., western N.C. life and social customs, and Appalachian and African American cultures as expressed in popular entertainment of the 1920s-1960s.

Arthur Sperry Pearse (pronounced like "purse") was Professor of Zoology at Duke University from 1927 until his retirement in 1948; he played a pivotal role in the establishment of the Marine Biology Laboratory in Beaufort, North Carolina, and served as the lab's first director from 1938 until 1945. Collection comprises professional papers and photographs documenting A. S. Pearse's career as a zoologist. Formats include correspondence, writings and lectures, lab notes and data, fieldwork notes, teaching materials, clippings and printed materials, and over 2000 photographs, glass slides, and negatives. The images document Pearse's research travels, particularly in Nigeria and the Yucatán, but also in Alabama, Florida, coastal North Carolina, Japan, China, Burma, the Phillippines, Colombia, and Venezuela, chiefly during the period 1915-1935. Images are of local flora, fauna, landscapes, villages, dwellings, local crafts and industries, indigenous peoples, and other scientists.There are also early photographs of the Duke University Marine Lab in Beaufort, N.C. Also found are many publication illustrations such as maps and charts. Prominent subjects throughout the collection include the establishment of and research projects at the Duke Marine Lab; the promotion of forestry as a scientific discipline at Duke; Pearse's role as editor of the publication Ecological Monographs; and his research interests in marine biology, ecology, crustaceans, parasitology, microbiology, biological adaptation, and forestry.

The Chinese women's health and family planning posters include posters with images and text about childbirth, women's hygiene, and family planning.

Dr. C.C. Adams (1884-1976) was a Black minister and active member of the National Baptist Convention, serving as secretary of the Convention's Foreign Mission Board from 1941 into the 1960s. Collection consists of correspondence and accompanying items Adams received as secretary of the Foreign Mission Board, mostly from members of the Pilgrim Baptist Mission in Issele-Uku, Nigeria. This correspondence documents the Foreign Mission Board's support of Pilgrim Baptist Mission's financial requests, expenditures, and growth. Medical illustrator, sculptor, and exhibit designer, affiliated with the University of Illinois College of Medicine in Chicago. Collection consists of the exhibit detail book containing text and illustrations for the exhibit "Ostetrical Forceps Delivery," curated by Dr. Frederick H. Falls and illustrated by Charlotte S. Holt, as well as five large and one small exhibition panels. The exhibit consisted of five sections: Anesthesia; Technique; Management of Newborn; Pathology; and History and Indications. Within each section, Falls and Holt presented examples of situations leading to a forceps birth, correct technique for the use of forceps, the issues arising from this method, and the treatment of the newborn after this procedure. Acquired as part of the History of Medicine Collections at Duke University.

Eugenia Seville joined the faculty of the Duke University Music Department in 1947 as an instructor, and was eventually promoted to Assistant and Associate Professor in 1950 and 1960, respectively. She specialized in Italian sacred music, and directed the Duke Madrigal Singers from 1947 to 1972. She died in 2006. Contains course materials, music facsimiles, performance scores, materials related to the Duke Madrigal Singers, personal correspondence, and ephemera accumulated during Saville's research trips in the U.S. and Europe.

Album contains 106 black-and-white and color photographs mounted in a black-leaf photograph album, bound in Japanese-style lacquered covers. The photographer may be an African American soldier named Tommy, who served in the U.S. Army's 511th Operation and Maintenance Service (OM SVC) Company during the Korean War. It is unclear whether the photographs are from Japan or from Korea. The images depict soldiers at work and enjoying recreational time. Many photographs depict both white and African American soldiers together. Other subjects include local women and children; women with servicemen; the countryside and Japanese-style buildings; and family members and others back home. Collection includes an early 20th century 10 1/2 x 14 inch portrait of four African American children. Acquired as part of the John Hope Franklin Research Center for African and African American History and Culture at Duke University.

Griff Davis (1923-1993) was a photojournalist, diplomat, and film maker from Atlanta, Georgia. The collection contains photographic materials and papers related to three photo essays illustrated by Davis: one on African American writer Langston Hughes; another on artists Hale Woodruff and Charles Alston; and one on the Palmer Memorial Institute, a private preparatory school for African Americans in Sedalia, N.C. Films in the collection were taken by Davis and include two home movies and six color and black-and-white 16mm films documenting people, politics, and agricultural life in Liberia during William Tubman's presidency in the early 1950s. Completing the collection is a photo album, "Progress in Liberia, Nov. 1949-Feb. 1950," containing twenty large black-and-white photographs, assembled to promote a partnership between the government of Liberia and the Liberia Mining Company. Acquired as part of the Archive of Documentary Arts at Duke University.

Frederick Cowper was an educator, born in Island Pond, Vermont, March 3, 1883. He received his B.A.,1906, and M.A., 1911, at Trinity College, Hartford, CT, and his Ph.D. from the University of Chicago, 1920. Cowper also received an L.H.D, from Trinity College in 1956. He was the author of, The Sources, Date and Style of Ille et Galeron, by Gautier d'Arras, (1922), and other works. Cowper was a professor of Romance Languages, Trinity College, Durham, NC, 1918-1924, Duke University, 1924-1952. He married Mary O. Thompson, (1881-1968) in 1909. Dr. Cowper died in Durham on January 24, 1978. There were no children. This collection contains correspondence, diaries, manuscripts, printed material, photographs and film, with bulk dates 1920-1970, produced or acquired by Professor Cowper.

Nathan Ockman was born on December 29, 1926 in New York City. As a child in the 1930s, he was brought by his parents to an event that featured pioneering choreographers in modern dance, among them Anna Sokolow and Sophie Maslow. Though he received no formal dance training himself, this childhood exposure to modern dance sparked a lifelong passion for dance spectatorship. The collection contains the dance-related memorabilia (circa 1949-2006) saved by Nathan Ockman. Materials include performance programs and newspaper clippings, which are arranged chronologically. Many of the materials are annotated by Mr. Ockman.

The Sonny Burke Collection (chiefly undated, but some dated between Nov., 1949 and June, 1951) has as its focal point 76 arrangements of popular music for "Big Band." These charts were used by Burke's band during the 1940's-1950's for performances in the United States and Mexico. Most of the arrangements appear to be by Sonny Burke, but other composers/arrangers include: Frank Erickson, Hal Schaefer, Stan Kenton, John Valentine Eppel, Laurindo Almeida, and Ray Conniff. Some of the arrangements were made for recordings on the Decca Records label. The most common instrumentation is for two alto saxophones/clarinets, tenor saxophone, baritone saxophone, four trumpets and four trombones, although other combinations exist. The instrumentation is noted for each title in the Container List.

E.F. (Everett) Bleiler was a novelist, editor, and scholar of science fiction and fantasy literature; he was the author of The Checklist of Fantastic Literature. This collection of original annotated typescripts from circa 1947-1949 relates to the compilation, editing and publication of the Checklist, and consists of the prefatory material, as well as substantial portions of the checklist as prepared for publication by Bleiler and Melvin Korshak, co-founder of Shasta Publishers and co-editor of the Checklist. Also includes a few related typescripts and the author-publisher contract from 1949.

Budweiser beer is an American-style pale lager produced by Anheuser-Busch. In the 1940s and 1950s the company sought to advertise its beer on billboards and other outdoor displays. Collection contains four dossiers from three different outdoor advertising companies, each proposing locations for Budweiser billboards in a particular city. Each dossier contains photographs of prospective locations, as well as accompanying notes and cost estimates. Collection also contains loose photographs of potential billboard locations. John Gutmann (1905-1998) was a photojournalist, professor of photography at San Francisco State University, and fine art photographer, whose work has been collected by many museums. Originally from Germany, Gutmann moved to the United States in the 1930s and became known for his work in photographing diverse groups, modern environments, with distinctive angles in black-and-white photographs. During World War II, Gutmann enlisted and stationed with the U.S. Office of War Information and U.S. Army 164th Signal Photo Company taking photographs and making motion pictures for the less known China-Burma-India (CBI) Theater in which the U.S. Army and Chinese Nationalist Army, allies, and civilians in various support operations such as transporting supplies, particularly the construction of the Ledo Road (also known as the Stilwell Road) and the journey of the First Convoy. Collection includes approximately 1000 photographs taken by Gutmann in black-and-white between 1942-1945, with most sized 3.5x5.5 inches and many include some notation on the reverse side including stamps for the Signal Corps. Materials depict various wartime activities such as construction, the First Convoy's journey, training, recreation, war injuries, office work, etc., in various locations in China, Burma, and India, with many identified in Kunming, China. Gutmann's photographs showcase notable figures such as General Joseph Stilwell, Colonel Lewis Pick, and additional military officials from the United States; General Ho Ying-Chin (He Yingqin); T. V. Soong; the Chinese Nationalist Army; Japanese POWs; Burmese nurses; Indian dock workers; African Americans serving in the United States Army; and civilians. Acquired by the Archive of Documentary Arts.

Abortion rights activist and the publisher of the feminist magazine ON THE ISSUES. The bulk of the collection consists of the records of Choices Women's Medical Center, a New York City women's health clinic and abortion clinic co-founded by Hoffman in 1971, and the organizational records for ON THE ISSUES, a feminist magazine owned by Choices and overseen by Hoffman. The remainder of the collection consists of Hoffman's personal papers, mostly related to her pro-choice activism. The collection also includes writings by or interviews with many activists, such as Aung San Suu Kyi, Charlotte Bunch, Phyllis Chesler, Andrea Dworkin, Kate Millett, Marge Piercy, and Elie Wiesel. The correspondence, administrative files, minutes, manuals, reports, surveys, research files, electronic records, clippings, flyers, brochures, newsletters, photographs, and audiovisual materials in the collection provide rich material for the study of the history of abortion, the pro-choice movement, women's health care, and the anti-abortion movement in the United States. The records of Choices Women's Medical Center are especially valuable for understanding the medical practice of abortion, as well as the political context of that practice. Other topics that can be explored through the materials include contraception, women's rights and feminism, and rape. The addition (04-041 and 04-062) (18,750 items, 30 linear feet; dated 1971-2003) consists primarily of administrative and financial files from Choices Women's Medical Center and predecessor clinics, including correspondence, financial reports, public relations and media files, board meeting files, policy and procedure manuals, subject files, insurance files, program files, grants files, legal files, and files related to ON THE ISSUES magazine. Also included are a small number of Hoffman's personal writings. This accession is unprocessed and closed to researchers. Addition (05-023) (5150 items, 12 lin. ft; dated 1978-2003) consists primarily of administrative and financial records from Choices Women's Medical Center, including correspondence, financial reports, public relations and media files. Les Brown (1912-2001) was a 1936 graduate of Duke University, where he led the dance band the Duke Blue Devils. Under the name Les Brown and His Band of Renown, the band would achieve professional success in the 1940s and beyond, including a long tenure as Bob Hope's band. The Les Brown Scores Collection chiefly contains manuscripts of 329 jazz big band charts composed and/or arranged for Brown's band, the majority of which are undated, but with some dated between 1944 and 1953. While some charts comprise both a score and complete parts, most are either the score only or incomplete parts only. One additional folder contains a concert program and press clippings related to Brown's performance at Duke University in 1985.

Charles Abram Ellwood (1873-1946) established the Department of Sociology at Duke University in 1930, retiring in 1944. The papers feature incoming and outgoing correspondence, chiefly professional but with some personal exchanges; minutes and other records of Pi Gamma Mu; book and article manuscripts; speeches; news clippings and book reviews; and some photographs. There are some papers related to his teaching career, chiefly related to summer school appointments and his positions at Missouri and Duke. A microfilm copy of a scrapbook (circa 1900-1946) contains clippings from Ellwood's career. Professional topics in the papers cover discussion and criticism of Ellwood's books, articles, and views; international and U.S. sociology organizations; the sociology departments at the University of Missouri and Duke University; social ethics; criminology; the social function of religion; and the scientific and statistical approach to sociology.
