Founded in 1864, the J. Walter Thompson Company (JWT) is one of the largest and oldest enduring advertising agencies in the United States. Harry Clark was an advertising executive who served as Director of JWT's Frankfurt Office and eventually of JWT's New York Office; Managing Director of Landsdowne Advertising, a JWT subsidiary; and co-founder of Smith Clark Associates, a consulting firm based in Princeton, N.J. The Harry Clark Papers cover the years 1945-1992, with the bulk of materials dating from the 1970s, the period during which Clark served as Director of the JWT Frankfurt Office, and during 1984-1986, when he served as Director of JWT in New York. The collection primarily consists of correspondence, administrative forms, presentations, speeches, meeting files, proofs, and financial reports, with extensive records from the Frankfurt Office. The papers of George Black, former advertising executive of the J. Walter Thompson Company, span the years 1968 to 1989, with the bulk of the material dating from 1972 to 1988. The papers document Black's activities during his tenure as Creative Department Head in the 1970's and then as Chairman of JWT-Frankfurt from 1976 to 1988. The papers of Wilfried Henkel, former managing director (Geschäftsführer) at the J. Walter Thompson Company (JWT), Frankfurt office, span the years 1957 to 1987, with the bulk of the material dating from 1975 to 1984. The collection consists of articles and presentations (typed or offprints) accompanied by charts and graphs, typed and handwritten correspondence, external and internal memoranda, as well as press clippings and other printed material, and documents Henkel's activities during his tenure at the Frankfurt office, where he was considered the "chief ideologist." Throughout his time in Frankfurt, Henkel worked on individual accounts, but more importantly he was one of the early proponents of corporate advertising, especially in the form of corporate identity and corporate communications. In addition, he worked extensively on JWT's corporate strategy, the T-Plan (target plan).

Hans Ihlefeld was financial manager and director of JWT's branch offices in Frankfurt, Vienna and Zurich in the 1960s and 1970s. The Hans Ihlefeld Papers document Ihlefeld's tenure as financial manager and director of the Frankfurt, Vienna, and Zurich offices of JWT, where he oversaw the expansion of the agency with regard to number of clients, subsidiaries, and financial volume. The collection includes correspondence, telexes and telegrams, memoranda, tables of results, charts and graphs, client and account lists, profit plans, computer printouts, invoices and receipts, contracts, clippings, articles and other printed material. Specific topics documented in the Hans Ihlefeld papers include financial statements and transactions concerning the German-speaking areas of Europe (Germany, Austria, and Switzerland) and Scandinavia, especially profit projections and periodic (monthly, quarterly, and annual) results reports; communication between Ihlefeld and other JWT executives and offices about JWT short- and long-term strategy; account planning; communication with JWT's European subsidiaries ARC, Basisresearch, Century, ProService, and PR; and correspondence with clients. The Paul-G. Siebel Papers contain correspondence, memoranda, speeches, and other documents spanning the years 1968 to 1975. The bulk of the material in the collection dates from Siebel's tenure as Geschäftsführer (General Manager) of J.Walter Thompson's Frankfurt Office from 1969 through 1975. The Siebel Papers mostly concern relations with the advertising industry. As media director of JWT Frankfurt (a position he held simultaneously with that of Geschäftsführer), Siebel corresponded with members of the industry as well as the media; as JWT Frankfurt's representative to organizations such as the GWA (Gesellschaft der Werbeagenturen [Association of Advertising Agencies]), he attended meetings within the industry and discussed a variety of advertising and political subjects. Other topics documented in the collection include media planning, account direction, production of advertisements, and business management JWT Frankfurt. The Organizations Series, relating to Siebel's participation in advertising groups, comprises one-half of the collection. Other series include the Non-Frankfurt JWT Offices; Correspondence; Memoranda/Haus-Mitteilungen; Clients; Media; Other JWT Frankfurt Departments; Euuropean Media Manager; and Organizations Series. In 2023 the agency was absorbed into marketing and communications firm VML. Bertram Metter was an executive with JWT who served as a creative director and was named Chairman of the company in 1988. The collection includes correspondence, writings, newspaper and magazine clippings, sheet music, printed materials, photographs, and photostats, that document Metter's career in advertising and marketing, as a copywriter, creative director, and Vice Chairman at J. Walter Thompson USA (JWT). The collection provides a record of Metter's early work for the Ford Motor Company's direct marketing operation, and other roles on the Ford account (Metter directed print and television promotion for Ford and participated in the launch of several new car models). The collection also documents Metter's work for clients including the Pepsi-Cola Company (Mexico) and Liggett & Myers Tobacco Company. The collection also contains materials related to Metter's later work as a consultant and author, including drafts of an unpublished book manuscript entitled Breaking the Rules at J. The Samuel W. Meek Papers span the years from 1917-1980, although the bulk of the material dates from 1945-1962 and a few items are undated. Samuel Meek served as Vice President in Charge of International Operations of the J. Walter Thompson Company from 1930 to 1964. Working out of the New York office as the head of the International Department, Meek established offices around the world, provided continuing support and advice to the heads of these international offices, made policy decisions related to international operations, and served as a consultant to a number of U.S. government and private agencies concerned with international relations and commerce. The Series arrangement created by the J. Walter Thompson archivist reflects Meek's activities and has been retained. Several categories of material are included: correspondence, market surveys and research reports, letters, official documents (such as the records of Meek's military service), and the transcripts of talks.

The Legal Department microfilmed talent consents and releases collection consist of release forms and consent agreements between radio, screen and motion picture actors and actresses, models, producers and stage production staff to allow photographs, testimonials, mentions or other forms of likeness to be used in promotion of programming, advertising, contests and publications by JWT clients. The collection also includes photographs, memos and other correspondence. Releases and contracts include white, Latino and African American actors, as well as broadcast materials in French and Spanish for national and international programming. The JWT Account Files is an artificially-created collection of information about client accounts held by the JWT and provides information about JWT's management of its advertising campaigns. Additionally, the files document deliberations about such topics as media selection; markets and marketing; and target audience for individual advertising campaigns. The bulk of the materials, especially the older records, document clients managed by JWT's New York Office, but the work of other offices is also represented, including: Atlanta Office (Marine Corps); Chicago Office (Oscar Mayer, Kraft); Detroit Office (Ford); and San Francisco Office (Sprint).
