Abortion rights activist and the publisher of the feminist magazine ON THE ISSUES. The bulk of the collection consists of the records of Choices Women's Medical Center, a New York City women's health clinic and abortion clinic co-founded by Hoffman in 1971, and the organizational records for ON THE ISSUES, a feminist magazine owned by Choices and overseen by Hoffman. The remainder of the collection consists of Hoffman's personal papers, mostly related to her pro-choice activism. The collection also includes writings by or interviews with many activists, such as Aung San Suu Kyi, Charlotte Bunch, Phyllis Chesler, Andrea Dworkin, Kate Millett, Marge Piercy, and Elie Wiesel. The correspondence, administrative files, minutes, manuals, reports, surveys, research files, electronic records, clippings, flyers, brochures, newsletters, photographs, and audiovisual materials in the collection provide rich material for the study of the history of abortion, the pro-choice movement, women's health care, and the anti-abortion movement in the United States. The records of Choices Women's Medical Center are especially valuable for understanding the medical practice of abortion, as well as the political context of that practice. Other topics that can be explored through the materials include contraception, women's rights and feminism, and rape. Les Brown (1912-2001) was a 1936 graduate of Duke University, where he led the dance band the Duke Blue Devils. Under the name Les Brown and His Band of Renown, the band would achieve professional success in the 1940s and beyond, including a long tenure as Bob Hope's band. The Les Brown Scores Collection chiefly contains manuscripts of 329 jazz big band charts composed and/or arranged for Brown's band, the majority of which are undated, but with some dated between 1944 and 1953. While some charts comprise both a score and complete parts, most are either the score only or incomplete parts only. One additional folder contains a concert program and press clippings related to Brown's performance at Duke University in 1985.

Charles A. Ellwood papers, 1889-1946

Charles Abram Ellwood (1873-1946) established the Department of Sociology at Duke University in 1930, retiring in 1944. The papers feature incoming and outgoing correspondence, chiefly professional but with some personal exchanges; minutes and other records of Pi Gamma Mu; book and article manuscripts; speeches; news clippings and book reviews; and some photographs. There are some papers related to his teaching career, chiefly related to summer school appointments and his positions at Missouri and Duke. A microfilm copy of a scrapbook (circa 1900-1946) contains clippings from Ellwood's career. Professional topics in the papers cover discussion and criticism of Ellwood's books, articles, and views; international and U.S. sociology organizations; the sociology departments at the University of Missouri and Duke University; social ethics; criminology; the social function of religion; and the scientific and statistical approach to sociology. Issues in Ellwood's papers related to crises of the time include race relations; political systems and beliefs; Fascism; persecution of Jews in Europe; U.S. involvement in World War II; religion and ethics; militarism and pacifism; and compulsory conscription.

The Samet family is a family of Lithuanian-Jewish descent that settled in North Carolina in the early part of the twentieth century. This collection mainly consists of the correspondence between Sydney Samet and his family in North Carolina while he was training at various United States Army airfields during World War II. Also included are letters sent to Sydney's mother and sister by the United States War Department and the family members of other soldiers from Sydney’s bomber crew after they were declared missing in August 1944. Topics represented in the collection include army life, Army Air Force training, and updates from family members and acquaintances.

African American soldier's World War II photograph album of India, circa 1942-1945

Collection comprises a 16-page 8 1/2 x 11 inch photograph album belonging to an unidentified member of the 45th Engineer General Service Regiment, a segregated unit of African American soldiers stationed in Ledo, India beginning in 1942. Their charge was to build a portion of the Stilwell Road, a major supply route from India to China. Mounted on loose pages, the 44 black-and-white snapshots include posed and candid images of individuals and groups of African American soldiers, at work and at rest. Soldiers identified in the captions include Charley Woodard, Clarence Benson, Charles J. Greene, and Cain Walker. There are also photographs of buildings on the base, including Battalion Chapel, headquarters (labeled "The Gateway to Hell"), Harmony Church, and a large Stilwell Road sign, along with various shots of military equipment, a "Coolie Camp," the "laundry man," and the Taj Mahal. Acquired as part of the John Hope Franklin Research Center for African and African American History and Culture.

Professor of history at Morgan State University, scholar of the history of African Americans in the motion picture industry, prolific author of books and articles on the subject, and script writer. The papers of Thomas Cripps date from 1839 to 2009, and are arranged into three divisions: films, photographic stills of African American actors and productions, and professional papers, the largest group. Taken as a whole, the films, movie stills, research files, and publication files document Cripps's investigations into representations of racial and ethnic stereotypes in popular culture, particularly in film, but also touch on other issues such as gender in popular culture, portrayal of race in Nazi Germany, and the social dimensions of African American life in the U.S. during the 20th century. Other materials stem from college-level courses taught by Cripps on these same topics, and include many of the visual resources he used in his classes. Acquired as part of the Archive of Documentary Arts at Duke University.

University of Chicago School of Economics, circa 1941-1989

The research Patinkin conducted in writing articles on the "Chicago approach" is the basis of the University of Chicago School of Economics series. The Raw Material subseries contains drafts of his dissertation, lists of other dissertations in monetary economics written at the University of Chicago in the 1930s and 1940s (including the one written by his, and now Professor Emeritus at Duke, Martin Bronfenbrenner), and numerous reprints of articles by Frank Knight. The Manuscripts and Notes subseries includes a number of slides Patinkin used in presentations of his paper "In Search of the 'Wheel of Wealth': On the Origins of Frank Knight's Circular-Flow Diagram" which was published in 1973 and later included in Essays On and In the Chicago Tradition. The slides, which present graphically early conceptions by different economists of the "circular flow" diagram now common in undergraduate macroeconomics texts, include the amusing 1887 diagram by Fleeming Jenkin which looks like five stick-figures skipping rope. Finally, the Course Material subseries is comprised entirely of one box of notebooks Patinkin kept from his undergraduate and graduate courses at Chicago.

General Monetary Theory, circa 1933-1995

The General Monetary series contains materials related to the "neoclassical synthesis," the integration of Keynesian macroeconomics and the neoclassical theory of value pioneered by W. S. Jevons, Carl Menger, and Leon Walras, and developed by Alfred Marshall and A. C. Pigou. Patinkin's contribution to the neoclassical synthesis began in 1947 with his University of Chicago dissertation "On the Consistency of Economic Models: A Theory of Involuntary Unemployment," and reached its pinnacle with his 1956 book, Money, Interest, and Prices: An Integration of Monetary and Value Theory (MIP).

Israel and Hebrew Material, 1944-1986

Aside from Patinkin's interests in the history of economics, but consistent with his broader interest in macroeconomics, he followed the development of the Israeli economy and wrote occasionally on economic conditions in Israel; he was frequently called upon to serve on committees advising the Israeli government. This work is the basis of the Israel and Hebrew Materials series. Most of the papers in this series are in Hebrew, though Patinkin provided English-language translations of most titles. Correspondence can also be found in this series. Other materials referring to his activities in Israel can be found in the Correspondence series in his communications with other colleagues and friends.

Amy Ashwood Garvey photographs, 1930s-1950s

Collection consists of 60 small black-and-white photographs dating roughly from the 1930s to the 1950s, belonging to Amy Ashwood Garvey, feminist and activist who traveled extensively and lived in West Africa, where most if not all of these images originated. The majority of the images are portraits of Amy Ashwood Garvey's many male and female acquaintances in Africa, who include female friends, politicians, heads of states, lawyers, and students. Other subjects include locales and native inhabitants of Nigeria and other unidentified places; gatherings such as meetings, a funeral, and a public hanging; and street and market scenes. Although there are photographs with inscriptions, names, and descriptions of the scenes, the majority are unlabeled; the few dates that appear are from the late 1940s. The travel snapshots are likely to have been taken by Amy Ashwood Garvey, but there are images that were sent to her by individuals as mementos, and some images of her taken by another unidentified person. Acquired by the John Hope Franklin Research Center for African and African American History and Culture.

The only caption in the group describes the appeal of the tree-lined street; this print is stamped "Ekpe's Photo Service." Prints measure 2.5x3.5 inches to 3.25x5.25 inches.

A series of 52 small black-and-white photographs consisting chiefly of portraits, candid and formal, of Amy Ashwood Garvey's many friends and acquaintances in Africa - female friends, politicians and heads of state, and native inhabitants. Most are in Western dress, but some are in traditional clothing, as in a portrait of a tribal chief with two women. The dates that appear on prints are from the 1940s. The majority are unidentified. Amy Ashwood Garvey appers in at least two of the images, one of which has several copies; one depicts a group of women on the "Shanahan" ferry at the landing (probably in Asaba, Nigeria), with Garvey in the center.

Aaron Siskind photographs of Harlem, circa 1932-1941

Aaron Siskind (1903-1991) was an American photographer and faculty member of the Chicago Institute of Design and Rhode Island School of Design. Collection consists of 28 black-and-white signed 11x14 inch prints, documenting life in New York City's Harlem neighborhoods from about 1932 to 1940. The images originate from two projects by Siskind: "Harlem Document" and "The Most Crowded Block in the World." Subjects include African American men, women, and children at home and in the streets; scenes from the Apollo and New Lafayette theaters, a nightclub, and a church; and the interiors and exteriors of tenement buildings. Acquired as part of the Archive of Documentary Arts at Duke University.

Farm Security Administration photographs, 1939-1942, 1939-1942

The U.S. Farm Security Administration (FSA) was formed in 1937 as part of social and economic reforms following the Great Depression. Collection comprises 18 color photographs taken from 1939 to 1942 by FSA photographers Jack Delano (8 prints), Russell Lee (7) and Marion Post Wolcott (3). Between 1937 and 1946, FSA/OWI photographers created over 175,000 black-and-white images, and only about 1600 color images using Kodachrome chromogenic film. Subjects in this collection are diverse and include sawmills in Georgia and Maine; a wheat field in Washington State, socializing at a rural fair in Pie Town, New Mexico; tobacco cultivation and a federal housing project in Puerto Rico; and a group of African Americans fishing near a cotton plantation in Mississippi. The prints are sized 10x13 and 11x14 inches, and were created in the 1980s by photograph collector Tennyson Schad using the dye transfer process. Acquired as part of the Archive of Documentary Arts at Duke University.

William S. Turman Jr. (1911-1983) was a friend of the Josiah C. and Mary Duke Biddle Trent family and a resident of Durham, North Carolina from approximately 1937-1942. An Okmulgee, Oklahoma, native, he served in the Civilan Conservation Corps (1933) and the United States military (1941-1946, 1949-1967). This collection includes a scrapbook assembled by Turman documenting his Civilian Conservation Corps service and a photo album that, in part, shows his friendship with the Trent family and life in Durham. The collection also includes Turman's high school diploma, a class photo, and three handwritten pages of English-to-German translations.

Through new tecniques of strobe lighting and electronic flash which Mili developed at MIT, the black-and-white images, some of which were used by Life magazine, portray human locomotion and the movements of other physical phenomena such as cascading water, frozen in time. Human subjects include two African American children playing with paddleballs, a man in the shower, a man aiming a racket at a shuttlecock, and female nudes. One image is of the photographer Mili photographing a stream of water with his camera. Acquired as part of the Archive of Documentary Arts at Duke University.

World War II propaganda collection, 1939-1945

This folder mainly contains propaganda leaflets created by the U.S. Army Psychological Warfare Branch for distribution in the Pacific, as well as information sheets detailing the languages, target audiences, and description of images and text in the leaflets, including English translations of the texts. Most of the leaflets target Japanese soldiers and civilians, with two leaflets intended for residents of Formosa (Taiwan). There are also some propaganda materials in Tok Pisin and examples of propaganda from Japan. Includes PWB Formosa leaflets numbers 1-FO-1 and 2-FO-1, and PWB Japan leaflet numbers 2-J-1, 4-J-1 through 6-J-1, 9-J-1, 10-J-1, 12-J-1 through 16-J-1, 26-J-1 through 30-J-1, and 32-J-1.

Peter Sekaer (1901-1950) was a Danish-born American photographer. Collection consists of fifteen black-and-white photographs taken by Sekaer from about 1937-1940, while working for the U.S. National Housing Authority to document living conditions and public housing projects in various places in the U.S. Known locations include Louisville, Kentucky; New Orleans, Louisiana; Williamsburg, N.Y.; Nashville, Tennessee; Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania; and Austin, Texas. Individuals in the photographs include African Americans and other people of color, and White Americans; there are quite a few photographs of children playing. The focus is typically on urban and rural dwellings and yards in areas of poverty; there are also a few images of public housing projects, small businesses, and warehouses. The gelatin silver print sizes range from 4 1/2 x 4 5/8 to 10 1/4 x 13 1/8 inches. Acquired as part of the Archive of Documentary Arts at Duke University.

Collection comprises 42 photographs taken by James Van Der Zee, known for his portraits and documentation of daily life in Harlem, N.Y., especially during the Harlem Renaissance (1920s-1930s). There are views of parades, athletic teams, a Baptist group, a first-grade Harlem classroom, and the interior of Van Der Zee's studio, as well as fictionalized settings and poses conveying hopes, dreams, and humorous situations. Subjects include an elegant couple in raccoon coats, a soldier, a female impersonator, a funerary portrait of a man in an open casket, Black Hebrews, Black Cross nurses, Marcus Garvey in regalia during a parade, entrepreneurs Madam C.J. Walker and her daughter A'Lelia, boxer Jack Johnson, and entertainer Bill "Bojangles" Robinson. Included is a self-portrait of the photographer playing a violin, circa 1930. An early portrait of Van Der Zee's first wife and daughter was taken around 1908, in Lenox, Massachusetts, his birthplace. Average print size is roughly 10 3/4 x 12 inches. Almost all are exhibit prints created mostly in the 1980s from original negatives. Acquired as part of the John Hope Franklin Research Center for African and African American History and Culture at Duke University.

The Schmidt-Stehnike family is a German family primarily comprising the children and descendants of Margarethe "Grete" Schmidt (1900-1933) and Arthur Stehnike (1898-1958). Collection consists primarily of correspondence between members of the Schmidt-Stehnike family; other materials such as postcards, death notices, a small number of photographs, and Margarethe Schmidt's autograph book; reference materials; and Marie Katz Hammond's edited and translated compilation of these materials entitled Schmidt-Stehnike Letters, 1890-1990 (2024). The bulk of the materials in the scrapbook document Ms. Chaffin's training as a dancer. Her earliest materials include photographs of her childhood dance classes and performances that are annotated with brief descriptions. Materials that address her secondary education and graduate-level work include yearbook pages, photographs, postcards, programs, and clippings. Of particular interest are her programs, reviews, and postcards that she sent home from Bennington College's School of the Dance. These materials are heavily annotated by Ms. Chaffin and give the researcher a sense of the life of a student at this famed dance institution.

The designs include work created or acquired by the Donaldson Lithographing Co., Foster and Kleiser, General Outdoor Advertising Co., and the AD-VER-TIS-ER, Inc.

Founded in 1864, the J. Walter Thompson Company (JWT) is one of the oldest and largest enduring advertising agencies in the United States. The Iconographic Collection spans the years 1848-2005 with the bulk of materials dating between 1940 and 1985, and includes black-and-white and color photographs, negatives, slides, contact sheets, photograph albums, and microfiche. It is an artificial collection created to document the facilities, key events, advertising highlights and corporate culture of the J. Walter Thompson Company (JWT). Domestic and international offices are included, with the New York, Chicago and London offices being the most heavily represented. Key executives include James Walter Thompson, Stanley and Helen Landsdowne Resor, Don Johnston, Dan Seymour, Norm Strouse, and E.G. Wilson. Client advertising includes Ford, Kodak, Chesebrough-Pond's, Lever Brothers (Unilever), and Warner-Lambert. Notable photographers whose work appears in the collection include Fabian Bachrach, Ralph Bartholomew, Cecil Beaton, Louise Dahl-Wolfe, Philippe Halsman, Horst P. Lee, Chief Engineer of the Duke Construction Company and the plats may have been created by the Atlantic Realty Company. This collection includes approximately 100 survey plats of Duke University properties prior to the construction on East Campus and West Campus from the years 1925-1926. Also included are plats representing the Duke Homestead from 1932 that were possibly drawn by V.A. Stewman.

William States Lee papers, 1911-1933

Collection contains photographs, memoranda of operations, blue prints, printed material, and volumes compiled by William States Lee in his role as consulting engineer for the construction of the Beauharnois Hydroelectric Power Station in Quebec Province, Canada. Included are over 1300 photographs which show the project's development from beginning to completion; project's weekly bound memoranda of operations from 1929-1933; and many reports, specifications, blueprints, and other plans generated from this project. Also included in this collection are some photographs, maps, and and other documents related to the Duke Power Company's hydroelectric development in the Carolinas. In addition, there is a volume outlining farming problems, especially erosion, in western North Carolina and southern Appalachia, and contains pictures of these areas.

Undated notecards containing background research notes and transcriptions of original sources for Hamilton's investigations on John Law, the Spanish economy, the Monroe Doctrine, mercantilism, and various other topics. An outline of chapters in Hamilton's personal papers suggests he intended to write a book on this subject, in addition to the articles he published. The cards about John Law have been interfiled with subject headings to ease use by researchers.

There are also files of personal and professional correspondence, printed materials such as clippings, maps, and diaries. Charles L. Abernethy, Sr. (1872-1955) was a Democratic Congressman representing eastern North Carolina from 1922-1935. His professional papers consist chiefly of correspondence and records from his law practice and legal cases, with smaller amounts of writings and speeches, financial papers, printed materials, diaries, and some personal papers, including early deeds. There is also a large group of photographs, photo albums, and clippings scrapbooks chiefly documenting Abernethy's political career. One album from 1907 contains postcards of Beaufort, N.C.; another contains photographs of a three-month Congressional trip to Alaska, 1923, and includes images of President and Mrs. Harding and a diary transcript of the trip. Other items include some papers of his son, Charles Laban Abernethy, Jr., also a lawyer, and a volume of his poetry.

Materials from the branch of the Hypes family that descended from Henry Hypes of Xenia, Ohio: Samuel Henry Hypes (1826-1917); his son, William Findlay Hypes; his grandson, Samuel Loomis Hypes; and his great-grandson, William P. Hypes. Collection includes a wide range of material from the Hypes family, particularly William Findlay Hypes, Samuel Loomis Hypes, and William P. Hypes. William Findlay Hypes' materials highlight his career at Marshall Fields and Co. of Chicago and his service as President of the Y.M.C.A. of Chicago, with emphasis on his family's world tour on behalf of the Y.M.C.A. in 1924-1925. Hundreds of postcards and photographs collected by the family are contained in the papers, including images from India, Ceylon (Sri Lanka), China, Europe, Egypt, and many more places, most unlabeled. Some material from Samuel Loomis Hypes' army service during World War I is also included, the most noteworthy being 24 black and white photographs featuring crowds awaiting the signing of the Treaty of Versailles and the shipping of troops back to the United States, including photographs of African American soldiers. Materials from William P. Hypes relate to his work with the Y.M.C.A. in the mid-twentieth century. The family's research into their genealogy and family history, unidentified family photographs, and smaller amounts of correspondence and material from other family members are also included.

The scrapbook contains programs for the 1920 and 1921 commencement exercises at Trinity Park School, a 1921 program for the Trinity Park School Senior Class Reception, a copy of the Men's Association at Trinity College's constitution, the constitution and by-laws of the Columbian Literary Society, the April 1923 issue of the Trinity Archive, a 1921 Trinity College calendar, a print from the Naval Academy, and Durham-related postcards (including City High School and the Geer Building). The scrapbook also includes several autograph pages. Most of the actual scrapbook pages are blank, with items placed between some of them. Other items in the scrapbook include clippings, the 1922 Trinity College football schedule, correspondence, the 1923 Trinity College commencement program and Senior Orations program, the 1923 and 1925 Alumni Day programs, the 1925 flag lowering program, a Trinity Musical Club program, brochures, a publication by The Duke Endowment, Glee Club programs, invitations, a Duke Chapel publication from 1932, and a publication by Harry F. Atwood entitled "Keep God in American History." The clippings relate to Trinity Park School and Trinity College/Duke University. Lastly, there are several pages of black and white photographs, largely unidentified, of individuals and landscapes.

Anthony and Newlin family papers, 1861-1974

Anthony family of Burlington (Guilford Co.), N.C. Collection primarily comprises 32 albumen photographs and one tintype (circa 1861-1954 and undated), most of which are accompanied by identifying information and feature formal portraits. Nineteen of the photographs represent Newlin or Anthony family members. Among the other thirteen, five are images of the Letterboat, Perry, and Holt families; four are unidentified images of World War I soldiers, possibly associates of Joseph Jonathan Newlin; and one is a print of evangelist "Cyclone Mac." The tintype is of an unidentified Confederate soldier, possibly James Rich, whose letter of 12 May 1861 is in the collection. Other materials include John Anthony's bank account book (1906-1907); his personal account book (1892-1922), with entries for housekeeping and farm expenses and income; and a commonplace book for M. G. Newell (1938?). In addition, there are a few letters (1910-1958), clippings (1950-1974), and printed materials (1922-1961).

John Ridlon was a physician, surgeon, and professor specializing in orthopedic medicine, with a focus on pediatrics, practicing in New York State and Chicago, Illinois. Collection consists of medical case files and casebooks; articles and papers; correspondence; ephemera; diplomas; photographs in the form of prints, negatives, and glass plates; and medical illustrations. Accompanying the papers is a set of 118 black-and-white images from a medical-military training camp in Plattsburgh, N.Y. around 1916. There are also a handful of photographic portraits of Ridlon. Correspondents include: R. Osgood, A. Steindler, P.D. Wilson, R.K. Ghormley, J.E. Goldthwait, A.B. Judson, R.W. Lovett, H.W. Orr, S.W. Mitchell, and H. Cushing. Collection comprises 176 Turkish political posters, including three duplicates. There are seven series of posters: Korean War, NATO, Historical significance, Commemoration of Ottoman historical figures, Republican-era historical figures, Leftist, and Presidency of the Turkish Republic. In the first, sixteen posters extoll the achievements of the Turkish Armed Forces command or Turkish Brigade in the Korean War between November 1950 and July 1953. In the second series, one poster represents Turkey's relationship to North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), and another reflects the naval and air force maneuvers of NATO's Southern Command, Greece, and Turkey at Weld Fast in 1953. The third series includes 27 posters that celebrate events of historic national significance and depict international political figures together with Turkish leaders. The fourth series includes four posters that commemorate Ottoman historical figures, including admiral Barbaros Hayrettin, and sultans Mehmet V, Mehmed II, and Selim I. The fifth series includes 14 posters of Repulican-era historical figures, including portraits of World War II generals and political figures. The sixth series contains 63 leftist political posters with political slogans, as well as calls for meetings and demonstrations; most of them date from the second half of the 1970's. The seventh series contains 50 posters issued by the Presidency of the Turkish Republic regarding the failed coup attempt of 15 July 2016.

Historical Significance Series, circa 1914, 1943-1960

Twenty-seven posters celebrate events of historic national significance and depict international political figures together with Turkish leaders. Within the series, there are seven posters celebrating the annexation of Hatay State into Turkey as Hatay province, one depicting Atatürk and Mustafa İsmet İnönü on the occasion of the 20th anniversary of the Revolution, one showing U.S. President Dwight Eisenhower shaking hands with Celâl Bayar, and another image of Winston Churchill shaking hands with İnönü. Also included is a poster entitled Voĭna Rossīi s Turkami : ǂb Vstri︠e︡cha russkoĭ i turet︠s︡koĭ ėskadr v Chernom mori︠e︡, or "Russia's war versus the Turks: the meeting between the Russian and Turkish naval squadrons in the Black Sea". Other posters depict women's support of the army and British-Turkish relations. Within this series, 19 posters are signed by artist Mehmet Bakı (some M. Bakı); the others are not signed.

The papers of tobacco industrialist and philanthropist James Augustus Thomas (1862-1940) primarily concern his commercial and diplomatic dealings in East Asia, and the opening of the tobacco market in China and other countries in the early 20th century. Materials include many boxes of correspondence, print and ephemeral materials, and photographs. Correspondents include Herbert Hoover, Robert Lansing, Theodore Roosevelt, William Howard Taft, and Sun Yat-sen. Includes materials relating to U.S.-China foreign and economic relations; the marketing of U.S. cigarettes in Asia; the British-American Tobacco Company; domestic policies and financial development in China; political events in East Asia and Europe; and philanthropy in China, including Thomas' efforts to bring Chinese students to Duke University. There are also some personal letters and three audiocassettes of an oral interview with Dorothy Read Thomas, Thomas's widow, with a typed transcript; interview topics include her life in China and St. Petersburg, Russia in the 1920s.

Folders contain printed materials collected by James Thomas, and include conference and meeting programs, reports, essays, analyses, and pamphlets, all relating to U.S. diplomatic and economic relations with East Asian countries, especially Japan and China, from about 1914 to 1938. Other topics relate to concerns about political events and global conflict in the late 1920s. Also includes ephemera such as programs and cards, with some relating to the New York World's Fair. A souvenir program with large mounted black-and-white photographs commemorates the visit of a Chinese delegation to New York in 1915.

Collection contains postcards acquired at various times by the Rubenstein Library at Duke. Collection is organized into three main categories--International, United States, and Miscellaneous. The International postcards are arranged by country and include cards from France, Italy, Canada, England, Germany, Japan, Spain, and Russia. The collection includes a set of early 20th century postcards from Thessaloniki (also known as Salonica and Selanik), Greece. The United States postcards cover many states, with large numbers from North Carolina and Virginia. The Miscellaneous category contains postcards with different subjects, including modes of transportation, food, tourism, agriculture, wars and battles, heads of state, flowers and plants, advertising, love and friendship, Confederate memorials, poetry, and animals. There are cards intended to be humorous, as well as cards depicting racist stereotypes and caricatures of African American and Native American people. Also included is a series of postcards with images relating to European artists.

The South Asian Pamphlets Collection spans the years 1920-2005, with the bulk of the material dating from the 1950s to the 1990s, and with only a few items from the 1910s-1940s. It is arranged by country. Topics commonly covered in each country series include but are not limited to agriculture, arts, defense, economic development, education, ethnic or cultural conflict, industry and commerce, international relations, politics and government, population issues, religion and philosophy, rural development, tourism, and the status of women. While the majority of the pamphlets were published by organizations and agencies and do not list individual authors' names, there are also pamphlets with individual authors listed.

Michael Francis Blake was one of Charleston, South Carolina's first African American studio photographers. Collection consists of 118 photographs, mostly studio portraits taken by Michael Francis Blake from about 1912 to 1934, with some outdoor settings. There is also a full set of copy prints. The great majority of the subjects appear to be African American; however, there are also individuals who are multi-racial, and possibly white and Asian. Formats comprise 91 photographic postcards and 28 black-and-white prints, many on card mounts but some in the form of more casual snapshots; there are also eight copy negatives. A few of the photographs may be taken by others. Thirty-six individuals in the photographs have been identified, including a portrait of the photographer. Acquired as part of the John Hope Franklin Research Center for African and African American History and Culture at Duke University.

Small pocket notebook including names and addresses of women's suffrage and women's rights societies in Great Britain. Conolan has listed the societies in alphabetical order. Societies range from political (Conservative and Minorist Women's Franchise Association, New Constitutional Society for Women's Suffrage) to vocational (Gymnastic Teachers Suffrage Society, Artist's Suffrage League) to national (Austrialian and New Zealand Voter's Association, Irish Women's Franchise League) to religious (Catholic League for Women's Suffrage, Jewish League for Women's Suffrage). Notable societies included in the notebook are the Women's Social and Political Union (WSPU) and the Women's Freedom League. Men's societies that supported women's suffrage and rights are also included.

Alvin T. Parnell photographs of Durham, North Carolina, circa 1898-1986, bulk 1910-1960

Alvin T. Parnell was a commercial photographer based in Durham, N.C. Collection chiefly consists of 167 black-and-white photographs of the city and people of Durham, North Carolina. The majority, chiefly taken by Parnell from 1920 through the 1950s, are views of downtown streets, commercial and industrial buildings, churches, and infrastructure, especially transportation. Many sites are related to the tobacco manufacturing businesses based in Durham. A few are of African American tobacco workers posed in the field and female factory workers ending their shift. Other images range widely and include a Trinity College (later Duke University) reunion, war veterans at gatherings, a minstrel band, a cart advertising Bull Durham tobacco, and tobacco fields with posed workers, white and African American. In addition, there are portraits of prominent Durham individuals and families. Formats include 85 vintage and modern gelatin silver prints, chiefly 8x10 inches, 82 contact prints, and 12 safety negatives. Includes an information folder with 1986 obituary and collection information.

Contact Prints, circa 1910-1961 82 items

Sometime in the 1980s, library staff had 82 small contact prints printed from Parnell's nitrate negatives, which were then discarded. Many are duplicates of larger prints in the photographs series, but there are also images not found elsewhere in the collection. Captions and dates accompany about half of them, copied from their original sleeves. Arranged in numerical order applied by library staff.

Places, circa 1910-1950s 47 items

These 47 images begin with one of the city of Durham's earliest sites, with the Bennitt farmstead - site of the largest Civil War surrender - photographed around 1904. Subsequent images chiefly document the 1910s and 1920s, as Durham grew into a busy manufacturing center based almost exclusively on the tobacco industry.

Marshall Turner Spears papers, 1910-1947

Marshall Turner Spears, a white lawyer who practiced in Durham, was born in 1889. He joined Duke's Law faculty in 1927 and served on it until 1936. Spears served as a superior court judge in Durham from 1935 to 1938. This collection consists of three lease agreements drafted by Spears between the Washington Duke Operating Company and Pritchard-Bright & Company, as well as three group photographs featuring Spears.

Roundell Tristram Toke diaries and photographs from military service in China and Japan, 1900, 1905-1907

Roundell Tristram Toke (1896-1957) was a British Army officer from Folkestone, England who was stationed in China during the Boxer Rebellion, and in Japan during the Russo-Japanese War. Collection comprises diaries and photographs documenting in detail his military service in China and Japan during the Boxer Rebellion, 1900, and Russo-Japanese War, 1905 to 1907. The first diary is set in China; the other three in Japan. All four contain daily descriptions of weather, social and administrative activities, military engagements, rations, medical training, diplomacy, and other details, with some sketches of formations and drill patterns. The diaries are accompanied by 146 photographs from China and Japan. The earlier group shows officers and soldiers from the eight allied nations, ruins and battle sites, and other scenes in Tianjin and Beijing following the Boxer Rebellion, 1900; later images show civilians and street life; military camps; drills; equipment; engagements; Russian war prisoners and their camps; towns; landscapes; harbors; and a few social gatherings. The collection also includes Toke's leather cigar case, inscribed on the inside with his postings with dates, beginning with Weihai, China, 1900.

Photographs of women's college production of a Sanskrit drama, circa 1905

Set of 62 captioned black-and-white photographic prints mounted on 14 cardstock boards, documenting an elaborate stage production of a well-known, classical Sanskrit drama, the S´akuntala¯. The play was probably produced at the Northfield Seminary for Young Ladies in Northfield, Massachusetts around 1905, at a time when Indian dramas were popularized and produced by many women's colleges. The photographs are mounted on the front and back of cardstock mounts, and portray individual young female actors playing male and female roles, as well as tableaus with groups of actors. The images vividly capture the actors' expressions and gestures and portray detailed Oriental costumes and props. Most of the handwritten ink captions name the characters depicted, and many also list quotes from the particular act or scene. One image features a scenic view of Northfield Seminary from across the Connecticut River. The images range in size from range in size from 5.5 x 3.75 to 8 x 13.75 inches, with the mounts measuring 9x14 inches. Acquired as part of the Sallie Bingham Center for Women's History and Culture at Duke University.

This collection documents the Gotham family and Elizabeth's relationship with the Duke-Biddle and Trent-Semans families.

The papers fall into six classes: journals and fragments of journals of Danske Dandridge (1864-1909) in 23 volumes, writing notebooks of her daughter Violet Dandridge in 12 volumes, and journals of Henry Bedinger (1830s) and Daniel Bedinger (1811); correspondence and materials on Ohio, Kentucky, New York, Virginia, and the northern Shenandoah Valley from the Revolutionary period through the Civil War; extensive family correspondence, genealogies, and memoirs used in writing Bedinger family histories; papers of Henry Bedinger, the American Minister to Denmark in the 1850s; poems, reviews and literary correspondence of Danske Dandridge, and poems and prose of her father and daughter; and horticultural writings of Danske Dandridge. Philip Turner (1740-1815) was a noted surgeon from Norwich, Connecticut and New York, New York. His papers date from 1751 to 1858 and contain correspondence, military hospital returns (1777-1780) describing the Army's sick and wounded, printed material, a prescription and logbook, and ledgers; these materials document Philip Turner's career as a surgeon in private practice in Norwich, Connecticut and New York, New York, in the Continental Army, and in the United States Army up to the War of 1812, during which he was stationed at Fort Columbus, NY. There is correspondence with George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, William Eustis, Henry Dearborn, John Morgan, William Shippen, and other prominent Americans. Also includes materials on Turner's family. Acquired as part of the History of Medicine Collections at Duke University.

The earliest item is a tintype, circa 1874, of Robert and his wife Eugenia with their daughter Annie, and the latest item is a large gelatin silver print taken in 1908 of Robert Reid Hemphill surrounded by his large family and others in front of their home place, probably in Abbeville, S.C., where he died that same year. The large family group photograph is accompanied by a key to each person's name, and there is also a black-and-white glossy copy photograph of the tintype.

The earliest photograph in the folders is a portrait, circa 1868, of James Calvin Hemphill as a youth. The latest items are undated black-and-white glossy photographs, possibly taken in the 1950s, of his home in Charleston, S.C., and his and his wife Rebecca True Hemphill's gravesites in Charleston. The rest of the photographs are chiefly studio portraits of J. C. Hemphill taken through his life, with other snapshots of J.C. and his family on vacations and at home. There are a few large group photographs of editorial association members and others. There are several portraits of James Calvin with many duplicates.

Joseph Conrad was a Polish-born novelist and resident of Bishopsbourne, England. Collection comprises letters and scrapbooks about the life and works of novelist Joseph Conrad. Correspondence includes letters by Conrad to David S. Meldrum, an advisor to publisher Wm. Blackwood & Sons. Conrad conveys family news, including his son Borys's activities in France during World War I; he also comments on his various literary projects, including Lord Jim, Heart of Darkness, Youth: A Narrative and Other Tales, and The Rescue. Other correspondence includes letters of Jessie George Conrad, and letters from Conrad to Sir Sidney Colvin and his wife, Frances; Henry Arthur Jones and his daughter, Jennie Doris Arthur Jones Thorne; and T. Fisher Unwin, Conrad's publisher. Frequently mentioned are Henry James and John Galsworthy. There is also an album of 43 cabinet card photographs, 1850s-1890s, of Conrad's Polish relatives, many of whom were exiled by political and military conflicts. Collection includes correspondence, family photographs, scrapbooks, notebooks, and other materials that document the lives of the family, social, civic, and business lives of the Kronheimer, Lehman, and Goldberg families and their extended family members in Durham, N.C. The reminisces mention five unnamed, formerly enslaved people owned by Isaac and Rosa Kronheimer, two of whom they received as a wedding gift. Also included are speculations about how the Kronheimers treated the people they enslaved, some details about how the formerly enslaved people traveled with the Kronheimers from Virginia to North Carolina, and what kind of help they provided for the Kronheimer family in North Carolina.

Tobacco collection, 1828-1996

The Tobacco Collection contains material assembled by library staff related to the manufacturing, sale, and use of tobacco in the United States, particularly in North Carolina and Virginia. There are also items referring to tobacco cultivation and processing. Printed advertising predominates, but the contents also include items that are not paper products. Typical paper-based items include cigarette and cigar advertising trade cards of W. Duke, Sons & Co., Lorillard, Liggett and Myers, John Player and Sons, and various other American and British companies; tobacco advertisements by Krueger and Brown of N.Y.; and souvenir tobacco albums published by Allen & Ginter. Other forms of advertising in the collection include broadsides, pamphlets, books, leaflets, letters, envelopes, cigar and cigarette boxes and labels, cans, a plate, wrappers, labels, and catalogs. Images include birds, animals, battle scenes, and persons, including a series on "African Types."

Hugh Mangum was a commercial portrait photographer from Durham, North Carolina. Collection comprises 937 glass plate negatives and printed black-and-white photographs taken by Hugh Mangum from about 1890 to 1922 as he traveled a rail circuit through North Carolina, Virginia, and West Virginia and in photography studios he and partners established in Durham, N.C., and Roanoke, Pulaski, and East Radford, Virginia. Localities known to have been visited by Mangum in N.C. include Winston-Salem, High Point, Raleigh, Reidsville, Lexington, Durham, and Greensboro; in Virginia, Christiansburg, Martinsville, East Radford, and Pulaski. The images are chiefly individual and group portraits of mostly unidentified women, children, and men, either in unidentified studio settings or outdoors. Most are white men and women, but there are also many African Americans and others who may be multi-racial. Hugh Mangum and his wife are present in several images. There are several street scenes identified as Radford, Virginia, as well as Warrenton (probably N.C.), and Christiansburg, Virginia. Some images feature houses, barns, mills, outdoor social gatherings, and animals. The last dated photograph in the collection is a mounted print of Mangum's body in an open casket, 1922. Of the photographic prints, there are 55 prints made from selected negatives, and 50 inkjet digital prints from a 2012 exhibit. Acquired as part of the Archive of Documentary Arts at Duke University.
