The Alphabetical Files are arranged into the following categories: Addresses, Administration, Annual Reports, Budget, Correspondence, Curriculum, Departmental Studies and Reports, Facilities, History, Photographs, Publicity, Recreation, Staff Meetings, Task Force and Curriculum Committee Action, and Women's Athletics. Within each of these subsections, materials are arranged either chronologically or alphabetically. The original arrangement of the materials has been maintained as much as possible.

Includes correspondence, clippings, memoranda, and printed materials. Within this series are letters and documents which pertain to Sydnor's teaching posts at Duke University and elsewhere, his tenure as chairman of the History Department at Duke University, and his involvement in various professional societies. Also included are materials which document Sydnor's role as a member of the Advisory Committee of the Office of Chief of Military History for the United States Army. Arranged alphabetically by either correspondent or subject.

The largest in the collection, this series consists primarily of correspondence and interview notes with various people to whom Carr wrote while doing research for her biography of McCullers. Among the many writers, artists, and friends of McCullers that Carr contacted, there are Edward Albee, W.H. Auden, Djuna Barnes, Simone de Beauvoir, Elizabeth Bowen, Salvator Dali, Greta Garbo, Graham Greene, Christopher Isherwood, and Alberto Moravia. While many of the people Carr addressed refused to cooperate with her biography, numerous others offered their assistance, and the series includes significant material from and about David Diamond, Jordan Massee, Edwin Peacock, Mary S. Tucker, and Tennessee Williams. The series is arranged alphabetically by the last name of the correspondent, but is preceded by four folders with general information, including addresses and notes about the people represented in the series.

Primarily consists of printed material, correspondence, clippings, photographs, and writings. This series reflects some of the primary activities of the Resource Center for Women and Ministry in the South. Included are programs and lecture notes from the various conferences that were organized by the Resource Center for Women and Ministry in the South; and minutes of meetings for the North Carolina Council of Churches--Committee for ERA, and the National Abortion Rights Action League - North Carolina. Other organizations represented in this series include the Religious Coalition for Abortion Rights, the Guilford Women's Network, and the National Association of Presbyterian Clergywomen. Also includes resource materials on various social concerns, including racism, child abuse, and economic justice. Arranged alphabetically by topic and chronologically within folders.

The bulk of the series is taken up by many boxes of files from U.S. Court of Appeals cases. Each box contains approximately .5 linear feet of material. Other smaller sections contain files on U.S. District Court cases, files on the Criminal Justice and the Federal Magistrates acts, correspondence between judges, school civil rights cases, administrative files, and judicial conferences.

A-100 through A-131 are missing from the collection.

The American Bar Association series documents Shestack's work as a long-time member of the legal organization. The materials reflect his active participation in multiple American Bar Association (ABA) sections and committees, especially those dedicated to the advancement of human rights and equal opportunity. Highlights of the series include files on the committee opposed to the Supreme Court nomination of Robert Bork in 1987 as well as files documenting Shestack's work during his time as appointed President of the American Bar Association from 1997 to 1998. The series consists of eight subseries: Correspondence, Writings, Presidential Materials, Sections and Committees, Internal Reports, ABA Publications and Mailings, Subject Files, and Administrative Files.

Minutes, memoranda, letters, reports, contracts, and budgets; much mimeographed material. Papers begin in the year the AFI became a private, non-profit corporation, although still relying on government funds, and run through Hanks' years as National Endowment for the Arts chairman. Arranged alphabetically by topic.

These images taken during road trips throughout the United States were selected by photographer Jim Dow for his published book, American Studies (2011). They are sequenced in the order in which they appear in the book; the first image appears on the cover.

This series contains research and preparation materials used in publishing Robert Hill's Marcus Garvey and Universal Negro Improvement Association Papers, American Volumes I-VII (1846-1940). The series chronicles Garvey's life in Jamaica, his travels through the Caribbean, the founding and evolution of the Universal Negro Improvement Association (UNIA) in the United States, and his fraud conviction, deportation to Jamaica, and eventual death in England. This series also includes Hill's Annotated and Indexed Subjects for the unpublished Volume VIII of the series, which covers Africa.

Contains folders of correspondence, data, and other supporting documents related to Schmidt-Nielsen's research on desert animals in the Sahara between August 1953 and July 1954. The folders are divided into two groups, general information and data, and are arranged alphabetically within the groups. His personal correspondence and journal entries are available in a bound format within the series. The data folders contain experiment results and research notes on camels, donkeys, rodents, and plants.
