Methodist minister from Salisbury (Rowan Co.), N.C., King was executive secretary of the Methodist Board of Education of the Western North Carolina Conference, 1934-1967. His wife, Mary Eskridge King, was active in affairs of the Methodist Episcopal Church, South, and president of the Women's Society of Christian Service of the Western North Carolina Conference, 1960-1964. The papers of Carl Howie King and of Mary Eskridge King span the dates 1918-1973, and document aspects of Methodism and politics and social movements in North Carolina during the later 20th century. Types of materials chiefly consist of correspondence, meeting and conference files, and biographical material on Carl and Mary King. Mary King's papers form the majority of the collection and document her extensive involvement in the Methodist Church and its organizations; topics of interest include Christian education, political conservatism and the John Birch Society, the Civil Rights movement, prayer in schools, the Vietnam War, student unrest, and communism. Carl King's papers include correspondence, writings, and notes from his student days at Trinity College, now Duke University, and Yale University.

The Jere Link papers comprise his private diaries and journals, creative and scholarly writings, lecture notes and teaching materials, along with incoming correspondence. Diaries and journals contain Link's personal thoughts and comments on his life, activities, creative and scholarly work, and relationships. Link was very open regarding his inner thoughts and concerns, and very frank about his sexual activities and his life as a gay man. His writings include general notebooks with drafts of creative work, screenplays, book proposals and drafts, Link's dissertation, along with articles, poetry, and short stories. There are teaching materials primarily featuring Link's handwritten lecture notes for his classes, along with additional related maps, handouts, photographs, exams and other materials. In addition, there are incoming personal letters and cards, along with some professional letters regarding Link's institutional appointments, writing, and Fulbright travel grant.

The Stirewalt Family Papers, 1828-1993 (bulk 1850-1947), are comprised of the personal papers of individuals from four successive generations of the Stirewalt family. The correspondence, writings, diaries, legal/financial documents, photographs, and other miscellaneous papers found in this collection document the Stirewalt Family's personal lives and involvement in the Lutheran Church as ministers, educators and missionaries. The collection is divided into four primary series which reflect the individuals whose papers make up this collection: Jacob Stirewalt, Jerome Paul Stirewalt, Martin Luther Stirewalt, and Catherine A. Stirewalt. The arrangement of the collection is primarily chronological, following the lineage of the Stirewalt family. Subsections within each major series are determined by the type of materials found within the collection and are arranged either chronologically, as in the case of the Diaries and Correspondence Subseries, or alphabetically and thereunder chronologically, as in the case of the Writings Subseries.

John Mead Gould was a Union Army officer and bank teller from Portland, Maine. The collection comprises corresspondence, diaries, legal and financial papers, printed materials, and photographs, chiefly relating to Gould's service with the 1st Maine Infantry Regiment and its successors, the 10th and 29th Maine regiments. Subjects include Civil War campaigns in Louisiana, Maryland, and Virginia; veterans' reunions, pension claims, and the Grand Army of the Republic veterans' organization; wartime and Reconstruction conditions in South Carolina; and Gould's business life in S.C. and Maine after the Civil War. One regimental directory includes a narrative of the career of a freed African American from Louisiana, Harry Johnson, who returned with the Union regiment to Maine. Photographs are chiefly of battlefields visited in 1889, 1910, and 1912, and of Civil War veterans. Also includes the letters and diaries of Gould's wife, Amelia Jenkins Twitchell Gould, 1860-1865, who taught for a freedmen's school in Beaufort, S.C., and diaries written by his brother Samuel McClellan Gould, a Presbyterian minister, 1841-1845, 1890-1895. Letters and other papers relate to the career of zoologist Edward Sylvester Morse, a close friend of Gould's.

Teacher, from Atkinson, N.C. The papers of Eliza Wright Murphy consist of correspondence, poems, school essays, receipts, printed material, reports, and photographs. Most of these items are the personal papers of Eliza and her brothers: Edwin Edgar Murphy (1874-1914), John Gerald Murphy (b. 1872), Paul Percy Murphy (b. 1878), Isaac Wright Murphy, and C.C. Murphy, referred to as "Neil." Also includes material concerning the Arran-on-Black River Literary and Historical Society in Wilmington, N.C., including programs, minutes, memos, and reports, and the Presbyterian Mission Hospital in Kiangyin, China. The correspondence consists of several hundred letters to Eliza and her brothers from friends and relatives in North Carolina, South Carolina, and Florida. News about local events and the correspondent's personal life are the chief subjects discussed. Correspondents outside of the immediate family included members of the Vidal and Wright families.

Foster (1844-1920) was a white farmer of Wilkes County and fought in the Confederate Army during the Civil War. This collection dates from 1801-1919 and consists of the personal, legal, and financial papers of the Fosters, including records related to property in Wilkes and Ashe Counties, North Carolina, and Van Zandt County, Texas; and family correspondence describing life in Van Zandt County. The collection also contains writings related to John A. Foster's Civil War military service, including a diary, notes, and autobiographical manuscript describing military action at the battles of the Wilderness, Spotsylvania Courthouse, and Cold Harbor.

Family with publishing connections in Maryland. Ezekiel Hughes was editor of the HERALD in Frederick, Maryland. Jeremiah Hughes owned the NILES NATIONAL REGISTER, and other publishing concerns. Principally correspondence of the Hughes and Gray familes of Baltimore, Annapolis, and Frederick, Md. Pervasive topics include personal and family matters, Md. and national politics, and religion. Topics occurring less frequently include finances related to the publishing business and the marketing of volumes, the Civil War, city missions for the poor, dealings with Native Americans, and Communism. The collection also includes 31 volumes of notes and diaries compiled by Ellis Hughes, chief anatomist at the University of Md., over the period of roughly 1830-1865. His 1865 diary makes reference to Lincoln's assassination and the capture of Jefferson Davis. The remaining five volumes were compiled by Jeremiah's daughter Susanna Hughes, who herself entertained literary aspirations. These volumes are a mixture of diary, devotional, literary copybook, scrapbook, and original composition.

War Dept. records book, and other papers, of a family of lawyers, of Raleigh and Fayetteville, N.C. Includes material on Confederate generals Theophilus Hunter Holmes, William Dorsey Pender, and James Johnston Pettigrew; schools, education, railroad taxation, and legislation, government and politics in North Carolina, particularly during the 1930s; and medical practice in Virginia ca. 1900. The Benjamin and Julia Stockton Rush papers include letters, writings, financial records, a few legal documents and one educational record. Benjamin Rush's personal and professional outgoing letters, with some incoming letters, cover a wide variety of topics, but focus primarily on medical concerns, particularly the 1793 and other yellow fever epidemics in Philadelphia, as well as mental illness and its treatment, and the medical department of the Continental Army. There are a few letters from others to Julia Stockton Rush that seek to continue ties with her and the Rush family or offer condolences following Benjamin's death. Collection also contains a medical case book and a fragment of an essay or lecture written by Benjamin Rush, along with his travel diary for a trip to meet with the Board of Trustees for Dickinson College in 178[4]; other writings include Julia Rush's devotional journal and exercise book. The financial records include a few statements and receipts, but primarily contain two account books, one maintained by Benjamin Rush, the other by Rush with his wife. These account books provide a complete picture of the family finances from the period before the couple married, almost to Julia's death. Legal documents include a sworn statement and a land patent, and there is an educational record for one of Rush's students.

A substantial amount of correspondence from Duke was written to members of the U.S. House and Senate, and was written by Duke in her capacity as National Chair of Population Action International. Walter Thompson Company (JWT) was one of the largest and oldest enduring advertising agencies in the United States before being absorbed into marketing and communications firm VML in 2023. John F. Dignam was a commercial artist and an executive with JWT during a 26-year career, in which he held positions of Vice President and Senior Art Director. The collection primarily consists of advertising proofs and commercial artwork created for clients of JWT and other firms, including the Victor A. Bennett Company, along with some of Dignam's freelance work. The collection also includes a few reports, television commercial scripts and other writings, along with some videocassettes of television commercials. The collection (300 items; dated 1914-1975) contains the papers of Marcel Montassut, a noted French psychiatrist who worked in the Hôpital Psychiatrique de Villejuif as Médecin-Chef from 1942 to 1960. Montassut's papers are primarily research-oriented and include several of his publications, notes on particular subject areas, and reviews of work in the field of psychiatry. Also present are civil and military documents pertaining to Montassut, as well as correspondence between colleagues, including the noted French psychiatrist Léon Chertok. The bulk of his research is founded in studies on depression, melancholia, and epilepsy. Griff Davis (1923-1993) was a photojournalist, diplomat, and film maker from Atlanta, Georgia. The collection contains photographic materials and papers related to three photo essays illustrated by Davis: one on African American writer Langston Hughes; another on artists Hale Woodruff and Charles Alston; and one on the Palmer Memorial Institute, a private preparatory school for African Americans in Sedalia, N.C. Films in the collection were taken by Davis and include two home movies and six color and black-and-white 16mm films documenting people, politics, and agricultural life in Liberia during William Tubman's presidency in the early 1950s. Completing the collection is a photo album, "Progress in Liberia, Nov. 1949-Feb. 1950," containing twenty large black-and-white photographs, assembled to promote a partnership between the government of Liberia and the Liberia Mining Company. The Nicholas School of the Environment's Senior Professional Program traces its beginnings to 1979, when the School of Forestry and Environmental Studies first offered a program of short intensive courses. These courses have been offered since then as part of various named programs and centers, including the Intensive Course Program, the Continuing Education Program, and the Center for Environmental Education. As of 2013, the Senior Professional Program is the only one of these terms that remains in use as a formally named entity in the Nicholas School. The Nicholas School of the Environment's Senior Professional Program Records span the years 1977-1997 and contain correspondence with faculty, syllabi, notebooks, schedules, and other materials from intensive courses, workshops, and conferences offered as part of the Intensive Course Program, the Center for Continuing Education, the Center for Environmental Education, and the Senior Professional Program. Writing desk at which one would stand, designed and owned by Virginia Woolf. The sloping top of the desk features a central panel in two pieces, with hinges at the top. The panel lifts to reveal a storage compartment underneath. Two drawers are located below the storage area, one on each side of the desk. There are metal pulls on each drawer. The left-hand drawer pull surrounds a flower medalion; the medalion on the right-hand drawer is missing. The drawers and desk top each feature a metal lock, but no keys are present. Quentin Bell painted the figure of Cleo holding a trumpet on the top of the desk. He painted the rest of the desk, except the back, in grays with black accents. There are random spatters of paint present on all surfaces.

Collection consists of photographs by Peter Goin on the theme of the interactions and the connections between people and the natural world, and the way people manage, perceive, and represent "nature." The images depict altered and artificial landscapes featuring beaches, canals, farm fields, rivers, prescribed burns and reforestation sites, zoos, an abandoned town, and other places. They were shot in various locations, predominantly in North and South Carolina and Virginia, but also in Alabama, Georgia, central Florida, Arizona, California, Tennessee, and Nevada. The project resulted in a book, Humanature (1996) and an exhibit. Image formats include 16x20 inch exhibit-quality color prints, accompanied by negatives, black-and-white work prints, and book illustration prints. Founded in 1864, the J. Walter Thompson Company (JWT) is one of the oldest and largest enduring advertising agencies in the United States. The Frankfurt Office opened in 1952. The J. Walter Thompson Company Frankfurt Office Audiovisual Materials span the years 1956-1993 and consist of 16mm and 35mm films, videocassettes and slides that document print advertisements and television commercials produced by the Frankfurt Office for the German and continental European markets. Companies represented include Braun, De Beers, Elida Gibbs (Chesebrough-Pond's), Findus, Ford, Glückslee, Hoffman's, Jacobs (Kraft), Kellogg's, Kraft, Maggi, Pepsi, Sunlicht (Unilever), and Wick. The Chancellor of Duke University was a position under the President, designed to exercise all of the President's duties when delegated by the President if the President was incapacitated or absent from the position. The last active Chancellor was William Anlyan, whose time as Chancellor spanned from 1988 to 1995. After his tenure, the position is apparently no longer in use. The collection includes files from a variety of different committees and councils related to the administration of Duke University. Collection also includes personal correspondence from members of the Board of Trustees, materials related to planning for the construction of Duke Hospital North, files on a proposed rapid transit system, debt and operating reports, correspondence, and materials related to Duke University's affirmative action and equal employment opportunity policies and programs.

Large souvenir folio album from the Yokohama studio of Japanese photographer Kimbei Kusakabe, featuring 100 hand-tinted albumen prints on original mounts, most with title labels in English. Also included are the highly decorated black lacquer covers and original presentation box. Most of the prints measure approximately 8 1/8 x 10 3/8 inches; the mounts are sized 10 1/4 x 14 inches. Images were designed to appeal to tourists, and portray crafts and trades; rice cultivation; tea houses; hotels, gardens, temples, and other scenes, mostly in Kyoto, but also including Kobe, Yamato, Nagasaki, and Arima. Portraits of people include: geishas bathing, playing musical instruments, and dressing; Samurais and Sumo wrestlers; rural inhabitants; a physician; a rickshaw and passengers; a funeral; and numerous other subjects typical of these albums. A few of the prints are attributed to other photographers, notably Baron Raimund von Stillfried. Acquired as part of the Archive of Documentary Arts at Duke University.

The thirty 20x24 inch exhibition-quality color photographs in this collection form a body of work, entitled "Wrecked," that explores the world of American stock car racing and demolition derbies, as well as the drivers, mechanics, pit crews, and spectators who prepare for and take part in the events. The images were taken by photographer Michael Itkoff from 2006 to 2008 at speedways, fairgrounds, and garages in New York State, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania. The prints are accompanied by a video of a demolition derby, a demolition derby team t-shirt, and a safety vest. Acquired as part of the Archive of Documentary Arts at Duke University.

The British-American Tobacco Company, Ltd., was established in 1902 by an agreement between the Imperial Tobacco Co. of Great Britain and its rivals, the American Tobacco Co. and its associates. These firms divided the world's market for manufactured tobacco products, and British-American took over trade with those territories not reserved to Imperial and American, that is, the export business everywhere outside Great Britain, Ireland, the Isle of Man, Cuba, and the U. S. and its overseas dependencies. Ownership of British-American was divided between its parent companies, American holding substantially two-thirds of the stock. The headquarters was located in London, England, and the office at 111 5th Ave. in New York City handled the purchase of leaf and manufacturing in the U. S.

Calla Raynor began her career at Duke in the Physical Education department in 1962 and served as the women's varsity tennis coach from 1967 to 1973. Raynor was instrumental in co-founding Duke University's women's basketball program. This collection contains correspondence, teaching materials, materials related to Ms. Raynor's education at the Woman's College of the University of North Carolina (now UNC-Greensboro), UNC-Chapel Hill, and Duke University. The collection also includes sporting event materials, student athlete records, tournament materials, newspaper clippings, audiovisual materials, collegiate sports institutions and organizations for women, and other records from Raynor's career at Duke.

The papers of the Abbot family consist mainly of correspondence, but also include financial and legal papers, diaries, a letter-book, clippings, printed material, speeches and photographs (including cartes-de-visite, and some cyanotypes and tintypes). The materials date from 1733 to 1999, the bulk ranging from 1860-1910. A significant portion of the correspondence comprises of personal letters exchanged during the Civil War between William Richardson Abbot, headmaster of Bellevue High School, and his wife, Lucy Minor Abbot. Abbot's letters mention battles and political events of the Civil War, including his experience as an officer in the First Regiment of the Engineers Troops (Army of Virginia). Other correspondence includes exchanges between W.R. Abbot and his immediate family, both during and after the Civil War, as well as numerous letters to Abbot from parents of boys attending Bellevue High School. The collection also includes materials from the lives of the children and grandchildren of William and Lucy Abbot. Letters from the Abbot children consist of personal exchanges, accounts of travel in turn-of-the-century Europe, as well as experiences in the German university system. Also included is a brief memoir by Ann Minor, Lucy's sister, documenting childhood experiences in Virginia during the Civil War. There are also papers belonging to the Minors of Charlottesville (Va.), such as correspondence of Charles and John Minor.

It was absorbed into marketing and communications firm VML in 2023. Collection includes newspaper and magazine clippings, memos, press releases, scrapbooks, and other printed materials that document appearances in mass print media of JWT and its offices, staff, and client accounts. Over the years clippings were variously pasted into scrapbooks; maintained in loose clipping files; photocopied and published as bound compilations. A portion of the collection focuses on JWT's takeover by British firm WPP and the careers of executives Burt Manning and Joe O'Donnel around the time of the takeover. Acquired as part of the John W. Durham, N.C. hospital established in 1901 Dr. Aaron Moore, Dr. Stanford Warren, and John Merrick to serve African Americans in the area. The Lincoln Hospital Records span the years 1901-1998, and primarily comprise the institution's administrative and medical files. The administrative records document the hospital's administrative history from the 1930s to the 1980s (bulk 1950-1976), primarily in files maintained by the hospital superintendents, especially Larry T. Suitt (1963-1977). There is also some information on the Lincoln Hospital School of Nursing. The medical records (1925-1983 and undated) include obstetrical, surgical, discharge, and death records. Some of these are currently closed to research. The collection as a whole documents the bi-racial cooperation that was involved in establishing, running, and maintaining the institution, and outlines the collaboration between Lincoln Hospital, Watts Hospital, and the Duke University School of Medicine in providing patient care as well as education for African American medical professionals. The medical records also demonstrate the emphasis superintendents placed on general record-keeping, statistics, and the documentation of a patient's medical history. Included is a Duke Endowment series that documents the funds the Endowment distributed annually to assist the hospital in meeting costs incurred by charity cases, equipment, and renovations. There are only a few items dated after the merger in 1976 and only one file regarding the institution's School of Nursing.

Collection includes slides, correspondence, poetry and short stories, posters and other printed materials. The bulk of materials relate to Pollay's research into advertising for 19th and 20th century patent medicines, traveling sales personnel, as well as support materials for teaching presentations along with a collection of plastic and plush toys representing advertising mascots and spokes-characters. The Sonny Burke Collection (chiefly undated, but some dated between Nov., 1949 and June, 1951) has as its focal point 76 arrangements of popular music for "Big Band." These charts were used by Burke's band during the 1940's-1950's for performances in the United States and Mexico. Most of the arrangements appear to be by Sonny Burke, but other composers/arrangers include: Frank Erickson, Hal Schaefer, Stan Kenton, John Valentine Eppel, Laurindo Almeida, and Ray Conniff. Some of the arrangements were made for recordings on the Decca Records label. The most common instrumentation is for two alto saxophones/clarinets, tenor saxophone, baritone saxophone, four trumpets and four trombones, although other combinations exist. The instrumentation is noted for each title in the Container List.
