Collection comprises 63 exhibit-quality black-and-white photographic portraits of Durham, North Carolina citizens of all races, ages, genders, and sexual orientations, taken from 1989 to 1992 for a Center for Documentary Studies project. Subjects include activists, writers, older people, working class men, friends, couples, and families. Many of the individuals were alumni of Duke University. Also includes several prints and a brochure from an exhibit entitled "Home Ground," featuring Vaughan's family and landscapes from two family farms, 1977-1987. Formats include gelatin silver, Polaroids (some in color), and four palladium/plantinotype prints, along with a hand-pigmented, textured print. The photographs range in size from about 8 3/8 x 10 3/4 inches to 11x14 inches and are all matted, captioned, and signed. Acquired as part of the Archive of Documentary Arts at Duke University.

George Van Metre was a civil engineer, real estate dealer, local politician and local recorder of weather conditions at Martinsburg, West Virginia. The collection includes surveying notes, drawings, personal and business correspondence and papers of Van Metre as well as William Ferrel and members of his family. Also included are weather observations, account books and letters from a missionary in India.

The bulk of this collection consists of receipts for dry goods, and farming equipment, including a S.C. bill for taxes on horses and slaves. There are also a few family letters, and two wills signed by Jacob Van Lear in 1820 and 1821.

Collection comprises a four-page letter Van Cott wrote (19 May 1884) to an unidentified close friend regarding her preaching in Dover, Maine, and its impact. She confesses "...I find the people spiritually dead" and tells the story of a father who dragged his son away from her and the altar. The letter is signed, "Peggie." She inserted into the letter a newspaper clipping reporting the revival she led in St. Paul, Minnesota.

Material appears to consist largely of ALS to and from Vallisnieri.

The U.S. Census Bureau conducts a nationwide census every 10 years. Census 2000 sought to count and classify a record number of the American population, emphasizing the changing demographics of the country. This collection was donated to the John W. Hartman Center for Sales, Advertising, & Marketing History by Sybil F. Stershic, a member of the Census Advisory Committee of Professional Associations for Census 2000. The collection includes a Census 2000 advertising binder, several informational and promotional posters, a partnership informational kit, and two special reports. There are also two VHS tapes with advertisements from the Census 2000 campaign. Acquired as part of the John W. Hartman Center for Sales, Advertising, & Marketing History.

Collection houses records regarding the history of the Urodynamics Society, currently known as the Society of Urodynamics, Female Pelvic Medicine, and Urogenital Reconstruction (SUFU), whose first president and founder (1978-1979) was Dr. Saul Boyarsky, physician and faculty member at Duke University, and donor of the collection. File contents include correspondence relating to the Society's activities and development, chiefly during the 1980s, and the transfer of the collection to the Duke Medical Center Library; several booklets with the Society's membership lists, constitution and by-laws, from 1978 to 1982 and 1993; printed articles and abstracts concerning the history of urodynamics; a bibliography of literature in the field (1990-1991); Dr. Boyarsky's notes and a long published article on the history of the Society (1999); Dr. Luis Perez's published article on the history of urodynamics (1992), with comments and a draft; and other small items. Acquired as part of the History of Medicine Collections at Duke University.

Member of Board of Trustees at Duke University; senior vice-president of Shell Companies Foundation, Inc. Collection spans the years 1841-1977, with the bulk dating from 1930-1977, and contains personal correspondence among members of the Upchurch family, including correspondence between Upchurch and his brother during World War II, when they were both serving in the U.S. Navy; professional correspondence concerning Duke University administrative affairs; genealogical materials for the Upchurch, Daniel, and Meadows families of North Carolina; commemorative material on Upchurch's mother, Minnie Gertrude (Daniel) Upchurch; and photographs, clippings, programs, and school materials. Much of the personal materials reveals the life of a middle-class North Carolina family during the first half of the 20th century. One personal letter is from John Steinbeck's sister, Beth Ainsworthy, and contains comments on Steinbeck and relationships in the Steinbeck family. Another group of materials relates to the world premiere of Samuel Barber's opera, ANTONY AND CLEOPATRA, at the Lincoln Center in N.Y. on Sept. 16, 1966. Included are invitations, commemorative programs and booklets, and the opera libretto. Other materials include Shell Development Company records on personnel issues such as labor relations and salary administration; and Shell Companies Foundation records (1963-1974), chiefly relating to the foundation's endowments, scholarships, and grants, as well as the company's donation budgets from 1969-1974.

Dick Groat (Class of '52) received numerous accolades for his performances in baseball and basketball while at Duke. Groat then served two years in the United States Army. He went on to play 14 seasons in Major League Baseball, winning World Series Championships with the Pittsburgh Pirates in 1960 and St. Louis Cardinals in 1964. He was also named the National League's Most Valuable Player in 1960. The collection includes a scrapbook containing clippings that document Groat's athletic career at Duke and several issues of the Belvoir Castle that contain articles documenting his baseball and basketball career while playing in various armed services leagues with inclusive dates 1948-1955.

The University Club of New York is a private social club. The album has 12 photographs of the Club's building.

Collection consists of ration coupons, stickers, permits, and certificates for tires, bicycles, typewriters, sugar, shoes, fuel oil, gasoline, and food which were issued by the Office of Price Administration between 1942-1946. There are duplicates for a few items.

The Engineering, Science, Management War Training (ESMWT) program trained students to participate in defense activities, in order to meet the shortage of engineers, chemists, physicists, and production supervisors during World War II. The Duke University ESMWT was administered by A. S. Brower, and was overseen by the United States Department of Education. The Engineering, Science, and Management War Training Program Records includes general information, forms, reports, bulletins, financial records, correspondence, and course material dating from 1940-1945. Collection contains the original returns compiled by the census enumerator. Schedules exist in four main categories: agriculture, manufacturing, "defective, dependent, and delinquent classes," and social statistics. The 7th (1850); 8th (1860); 9th (1870); and 10th (1880) censuses are included, while the states covered are Colorado, District of Columbia, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Tennessee, and Virginia, with scattered records for Montana, Nevada, and Wyoming. In many cases the returns are not complete. For a given schedule all counties of a state may not be represented.

The Office of Ordnance Research (OOR), U.S. Army, a Class II military institution, established offices on the Duke University campus in June 1951. On January 16, 1961 the OOR ceased to exist and was instead re-designated as the Army Research Office-Durham (AROD) under the command of the Chief, Research and Development. The 1960s and 1970s saw a weakening in the working relationship between the military and the scientific communities. In the spring of 1975, ARO left the Duke campus and moved to the Research Triangle Park, ten miles southeast of Durham. Collection contains materials pertaining to the mission and organization of the U.S. Army Office of Ordinance Research, the forerunner of the Army Research Office-Durham (AROD). The materials in the collection span the years 1957-1982.
