Leah Fritz (1932-2020) was an American feminist poet and author born in New York. She wrote the books Thinking Like a Woman (1975) and Dreamers and Dealers (1980), focusing on the women's movement. The Leah Fritz papers contain correspondence and subject files; writings, including notebooks and diaries, drafts, published articles, and papers related to the publication of Fritz's prose writings, poetry, and book and article reviews; and audiocassettes of presentations and poetry readings by Fritz and other recordings. Materials range in date from circa 1950 to 2009. Acquired as part of the Sallie Bingham Center for Women's History and Culture.

Bill Brown is a filmmaker, photographer, and zinester from Lubbock, Texas. His films explore the landscapes of North America, including the United States–Mexico border, North Dakota missile silos, and the Trans-Canada Highway, and have been exhibited at film festivals and museums around the world. He received a BFA from Harvard in 1992 and a MFA from CalArts in 1997. Brown is the author of a zine called Dream Whip as well as a novel on the underground in L.A., Saugus to the Sea. In January 2013, Bill Brown donated his personal collection of zines, comprising 186 titles and almost 250 issues in total. Although Brown never actively collected zines, he was always eager to barter and trade with other zine makers. The resulting collection includes zines spanning from the mid-1990s to the early 2000s. The zines are arranged alphabetically by title.

The Equal Rights Amendment is an amendment proposed to the United States Constitution which would seek to guarantee equal rights to all American citizens regardless of their sex. It was first proposed in Congress in 1923 by Alice Paul and Crystal Eastman, and was reintroduced at every congressional session until it was finally passed by the 92nd Congress in 1972. This collection consists of printed materials and circulated literature both supporting and opposing early iterations of the Equal Rights Amendment, largely dating from the 1930s-1940s.

Since the 1960s, and particularly after the Stonewall uprising of 1969, the modern women's rights and lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender rights movements (LGBT) have produced their own magazines, journals, newspapers, and newsletters as a strategy for unifying and galvanizing their constituencies. These periodicals served to inform movement activists about pertinent actions, news stories, and cultural trends unreported by the mainstream media. The Salber Papers span the years 1937 to 1990, with the bulk of the papers dating from 1967 to 1990. The collection contains correspondence; financial papers; writings and speeches; clippings; photographs, many by Dominic D'Eustachio; reports; minutes; scrapbooks; training manuals; student papers; printed material; and lecture notes chiefly relating to Salber's publications, teaching career, and work as a community health physician. Publications highlighted include Caring and Curing(New York, N.Y., 1975) ; Don't Send Me Flowers When I'm Dead (Durham, N.C., 1983) , containing interviews with the rural elderly in Durham County, N.C.; and The Mind is Not the Heart(Durham, N.C., 1989) . Her work in the community health field is documented primarily in her writings, the papers about the Martha M. Eliot Family Health Center, and the Health Facilitator Program, which was administered through the Duke University Medical Center Department of Community and Family Medicine. Outgrowths of the Health Facilitator Program are featured in the information about the Health and Human Services Program of the General Baptist State Convention of North Carolina. Other topics include smoking research among young people, teacher and student relationships, and the financing of community health service projects. The collection contains few personal papers and little information about Salber prior to 1967. Explanatory notes by Salber scattered throughout the collection offer insights rarely available in manuscript collections.

Haruka Sakaguchi is a Japanese-born freelance documentary photographer currently residing in New York City. Her project, "'I Will Not Stand Silent.' 10 Asian Americans Reflect on Racism During the Pandemic and the Need for Equality" addresses pandemic-fueled racism against Asian Americans. Created by Sakaguchi in collaboration with TIME photo editors Sangsuk Sylvia Kang and Katherine Harris Pomerantz, the black-and-white digital photographs and accompanying textual accounts tell the stories of ten young Asian Americans who share their experiences of racism during the pandemic and how their perspectives have been shaped by the Black Lives Matter protests. Each person's project entry consists of a first-person account in Word file format and a digital image file in Tiff format showing a portrait of the individual laid atop a larger photograph of the location in New York City where they were harassed. Acquired as part of the Archive of Documentary Arts at Duke University.

The collection consists of five typescript letters, one photocopied Encyclopedia Britannica article regarding Sackville-West's book "Aphara Behn" in the "Representative Women" series, along with a poem. The first letter, one page addressed to Sackville-West, dated 1953 May 22, signed "A. Purvis," discusses the birthplace and date of Aphra Behn. A photocopy of the Encyclopedia Britannica article on Behn is included. A typescript note dated 18 July, 1961, signed V. Sackville-West on Sissinghurst letterhead, was written in response to a letter from Sylvia Haymon about Aphra Behn, and Sackville-West's article on Behn in the Encyclopedia Britannica. Included are copies of three letters, all dated 1961, sent to Sylvia Haymon, two to Sackville-West, and one to Miss J. Parfitt, Acting Editor of the Women's Page of The Times in London. The topics of the undated, one-page "Diary-Poem" have to do with Sackville-West's loss of her given name upon her marriage to Harold Nicolson in 1913, and the loss of Knole, her family's estate in Kent, in 1928 because of patriarchal inheritance laws.

Broadcast journalist, businessman, and resident of Palm Beach (Palm Beach Co.), Fla. These papers are comprised primarily of correspondence, clippings, essays, and articles related to the subjects Rutherfurd covered during his career as a broadcast journalist. Topics reflect his interest in diplomacy, journalism, and U.S. foreign relations since 1961. Much of the material documents the career of Angier Biddle Duke, a Rutherfurd family friend who served in the diplomatic corps during the Kennedy and Johnson administrations. Other material reflects the instrumental role Rutherfurd played in the creation of Duke University's Living History Program. The collection also contains more than 53 audiocassettes, two videocassettes, scripts, and filmed interviews (late 1960s to 1980s) with prominent individuals, as well as recordings of TV news segments and radio shows.

Collection contains correspondence, travel journals, account books, memorandum books, farm records, legal records, commonplace books, class notes, and other papers (chiefly 1781-1865) of John Rutherfoord; of his son, John Coles Rutherfoord, lawyer, planter, and state legislator; and of other members of the family. The papers before 1818 are chiefly legal and business papers and include information on family investments in Kentucky lands and other ventures. The papers of John Rutherfoord relate to his career as governor, his agricultural and business affairs; Virginia and U.S. politics, the American Party; the return of fugitive slaves, secession and events preceeding the Civil War, Confederate foreign relations; and family matters; and they include letters from Edward Coles, William Cabell Rives, and others of Rutherfoord's relatives by marriage, concerning agriculture and anti-slavery sentiment in Virginia and relations between the United States and France. John Coles Rutherfoord's papers relate to his attendance at Washington College (now Washington and Lee University) and the University of Virginia, his interests in politics and European travel, his legal activities, his work as a state legislator (1852-1865) and as manager of the family estates, westward expansion, and social life and customs in Virginia. The Ralph Leslie Rusk Papers span the years 1782-1981, and chiefly concern Rusk's teaching and research in American Literature, notably the life and letters of Ralph Waldo Emerson. A copy, in an unknown hand, of a letter from Rush to Bayard regarding sentiments expressed in an earlier letter to General John Armstrong. The letter reflects post-revolutionary state politics in Pennsylvania. In the letter, Rush censures his fellow Presbyterians, who refuse to revoke the test laws and to admit amendments to the state constitution. He also condemns the taking over by the Presbyterian dominated state government of the charter of the College of Philadelphia, now the University of Pennsylvania, and refers to the College of Carlisle, or Dickinson College, established in protest to the first action. He regrets the inflammatory remarks and publications made by members of the state's single legislative body, the Council of Censors, and by Joseph Reed and Mr. Smiley, and deplores the character of Henry Osborn and Owen Faris.

The Center for Documentary Studies is a center at Duke University established for the study of the documentary process. The color photographs and oral histories in the Five Farms: Stories From American Farm Families collection form part of a multimedia project carried out under the auspices of the Center for Documentary Studies. Beginning in March 2008, photographers Alix Lowrey Blair, Andrew Lewis, Tom Rankin, Elena Rue, and Steve Schapiro, along with audio specialists Ben Adler, Rob Dillard, Camille Lacapa, Susannah Lee, and John Biewen, each visited an American farm and documented the farm families' experiences over the course of a year. The locations for the Five Farms series are: a family farm on the Hopi Reservation in northeastern Arizona; an organic farm in California's Capay Valley; a dairy farm in western Massachusetts; a diversified farm in central Iowa; and an African American-owned hog farm in eastern North Carolina. Mary Rudge was a peace activist and poet. Collection comprises an unpublished typescript Share the Seed: A Farmworkers Anthology, containing a compilation of voices of the Farmworkers Movement, edited by Mary Rudge, dated 1979. There are at least one hundred items, including narratives and interviews, poems, songs, documents, sketches, and photocopied photographs, focusing on farmworkers in California, as well as elsewhere in the United States. The text features corrections and emendations. Signed by Rudge at the end of her foreword to the volume. Velobound in brown vinyl covers. Several pages missed the binding and are thus laid in. Also laid in are several ephemeral pieces from the farmworkers movement.

Henry Ruark was a North Carolina Methodist minister whose sermons appeared in the Greensboro Daily News and were later published in book form. In 1960, he was minister of the First Methodist Church in Laurinburg, North Carolina. Collection chiefly contains Ruark's notes and clippings on a variety of issues and topics. Subjects include various Biblical issues, and how the church relates to secular issues such as war and racial integration. There are some reports he made to the Christian Century, as well as at least 200 sermons preached in Laurinburg, Rocky Mount, N.C. and the Duke University Chapel in Durham, N.C. There are also clippings from the Greensboro Daily News, sermons by others, and correspondence.

Donald Francis Roy (1909-1980), noted industrial sociologist, was a faculty member at Duke University in the Department of Sociology from 1950 until his retirement in 1979. Roy's areas of specialization were field methods of sociological research and social conflict. The collection includes correspondence, clippings, articles, reviews, manuscripts, research and field notes, reprints, newsletters, photographs, teaching materials, pamphlets, and other written materials. The major subjects of the collection are Roy's study of industrial sociology; workplace interactions; and specific collective bargaining and union campaigns of the Textile Workers Union of America, the Teamsters Union, and the American Federation of State, County, and Municipal Employees. Gilbert Theodore Rowe was born in Salisbury, NC on September 10, 1875. His father was Joseph Columbus Rowe, a Methodist minister. He received his A.B. and D.D. from Trinity College in 1895 and 1914, respectively. He earned his S.T.D. at Temple University in 1905 and was awarded a Litt.D. from Duke University in 1925. In 1928, he returned to Duke University as Professor and Chair of Christian Doctrine and remained until his retirement in 1949. The collection includes correspondence, clippings and Dr. Rowe's sermon notes, as well as material pertaining to his father, Joseph Columbus Rowe. The collection ranges in date from 1878-1965
