The Archives document the history of Benton & Bowles advertisements; the merger of the D'Arcy MacManus Masius and Benton & Bowles companies; the early careers of William Benton and Atherton W. Hobler; research and publication about the history of Benton & Bowles; employee training, recruitment, and management; corporate publications; and marketing research. Includes material from three companies: D'Arcy Masius Benton & Bowles, Benton & Bowles, and D'Arcy MacManus Masius. Specific formats include memoranda; correspondence; reports; corporate publications, such as house organs, research reports, manuals, credentials, and employee reference material; press releases and a press book; speeches; clippings; photographs in color and black-and-white, and negatives; films and DVDs of advertisements; book manuscripts; audio tapes; financial papers; and a scrapbook. Clients represented in the Advertisements Series include the Procter & Gamble Company, General Foods Corporation, Allied Chemical Corporation, Avco Corporation, Colgate Palmolive Co., Florida Citrus Commission, International Business Machines Corporation, and West Point Pepperell. The unprocessed addition (554 items, dated ca. 1950s-1980s) comprises 16-mm film reels of commercials. Walter H. Smith donated this collection of Beat Literature. The majority relates to the career and life of Allen Ginsberg, a founding member of the Beat Generation. Other writers represented include Anne Waldman, Diane di Prima, and Anselm Hollo. Accessions (2009-0113) and (2009-0130) (200 items; 3.5 lin. ft.; dated 1959-2003) include books, compilations, journals, magazines, and other publications with works by and about Allen Ginsberg. Also included are posters and broadsides advertising events, readings, or publications by Ginsberg; many of these are signed. Accession (2010-0098) (25 items; 0.6 lin. ft.; dated 1950-2009) includes writings and some correspondence from Diane di Prima, Anselm Hollo, and Anne Waldman; also includes some Allen Ginsberg materials. Accession (2011-0045) (27 items; 1.5 lin. ft.; dated 1963-2007) includes pamphlets and publications by Gary Snyder.

Jack Lawrence Treynor (1930-2016) was President of Treynor Capital Management. This collection primarily documents his professional life through his correspondence, writings, professional activities, research, and teaching. It was acquired as part of the Economists' Papers Archive.

Fred Chappell (born 1936) is an author and poet. He was an English professor at UNC Greensboro for 40 years, and he was the Poet Laureate of North Carolina from 1997 to 2002. Collection consists largely of correspondence and writings by Chappell and others, documenting Chappell's literary career, output, and network.

Roy Lightner was an advertising and marketing executive, primarily with N.W. Ayer & Son agency, from which he retired in 1980, and with Carden & Cherry Advertising of Nashville, Tenn. The Roy Lightner Collection of Antique Advertisements spans the years 1871-2009 and includes primarily print advertisements clipped from U.S. magazines. Also present are proofs of print advertisements and 16mm reels of television commercials, much of which was produced by the N.W. Ayer & Son agency during Lightner's career there. Advertisements predominantly focus on automobiles, railroads, insurance companies and manufacturers of brand name consumer goods. Over 300 companies are represented in the collection, including AT&T, Buick, Cadillac, Campbell's, Chevrolet, Chrysler, Coca-Cola, Dodge, Du Pont, Kodak, Ford, General Electric, General Mills, General Motors, Lincoln-Mercury, Metropolitan Life, Oldsmobile, Packard, Plymouth, Pontiac, RCA, and Studebaker.Acquired as part of the John W. Peter A. Diamond (born 1940) is a Nobel Prize winner and an Institute Professor Emeritus (of economics) at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. This collection primarily documents his professional life through his correspondence, writings, and professional and faculty activities. It was acquired as part of the Economists' Papers Archive.

Advertising executive for Lord Geller Federico Einstein, Lord Einstein O'Neill; Arthur Einstein Advertising, an advertising and consulting firm; and Loyalty Builders LLC, a marketing services company. Collection spans the years 1978-2001 and includes advertising agency credentials presentations, correspondence, print advertisements, audiocassettes, videocassettes, compact discs, 16mm films, clippings and other materials that document Arthur Einstein's career as an advertising executive and consultant. Companies represented include Bankers Trust, Compaq, DDB Needham, Foote Cone Belding, IBM, the New York Stock Exchange, Oppenheimer Funds, Saab and Steinway. Acquired as part of the John W. Thomas E. Dixon was a Duke University administrator from the 1970s through the early 1990s, holding the positions of Associate University Controller, Controller and Co-director of Human Resources, Associate Vice President for Administrative Services, and Vice President for Administrative Services (1989-1993). The Thomas E. Dixon Papers, 1967-1993, contain correspondence, memoranda, reports, meeting agendas and minutes, and other materials that document Thomas Dixon's tenure as Vice President for Administrative Services and other positions he held at Duke University from the late 1970s through the early 1990s. Records mainly consist of subject files pertaining to operations of non-academic divisions of the university, including Auxiliary Services, the Facilities Management Department, the Office of Human Resources, and the Telecommunications Division (Tel-Com). Also represented are committees with which Dixon was involved, including the President's Advisory Committee on Resources, the Safety Task Force, and the Committee on Social Implications of Duke's Investment Policy. Other materials include minutes of several committees of the Duke University Board of Trustees and a variety of reports, plans, and blueprints about the construction and opening of the Washington Duke Inn & Golf Club in 1980s.

The oral history video recordings, audio recordings, and transcripts in this collection were produced or collected by the Jewish Heritage Foundation of North Carolina (JHFNC) and historian Leonard Rogoff as source material for various projects related to the history of Jews in North Carolina. The collection consists of individual and group interviews of Jewish residents of urban and rural North Carolina, including rabbis. Topics discussed by interviewees include family and community history, religious education, participation in Jewish congregations, anti-Semitism and race relations the civil rights movement in North Carolina, World War II military service and the Holocaust, family businesses, and philanthropy. Interviewers include Rogoff, Robin Gruber, and Steven Channing.

Jewish Orthodoxy, the traditional section of Jewry that maintains a religiously observant way of life based on a divinely ordained Torah and its laws, is composed of many groups that differ by certain customs and ideological trends. This collection documents Jewish Orthodoxy in its various manifestations through ephemeral publications created and distributed by Orthodox Jewish groups in Israel, the United States, and around the world. The materials range in date from 1914-2004, with the bulk of the material published between 1950-1995.

Collection contains a 4-page letter (7 March 1873) Whipple wrote to Jeremiah Hacker, a Maine reformer, abolition advocate, journalist, and publisher of "The Pleasure Boat." Whipple mentions an article Hacker wrote for "The Voice of Peace," as well as his admiration for "The Pleasure Boat" and "N.P. Rogers' Newspaper Writings." He also discusses his difficulty printing "The Voice of Peace," and the increase in pacifism since the end of the Civil War, noting that abolitionists and industrialists Adin Ballou and E. D. Draper were constant in their support of peace, while members of the utopian Hopedale Community were "untrue to the professions of years." Whipple included a printed photograph with his letter.

Hansen Glove Corporation was a manufacturer of gloves and mittens based in Milwaukee, Wis. Collection includes black-and-white photographs, print advertisements, transcripts of meetings, published booklets, sales literature, catalogs and color sample guides. Advertising materials may be the work of the Klau-Van Pietersom-Dunlap agency (later part of Hoffman York). Acquired as part of the John W. Hartman Center for Sales, Advertising & Marketing History.

Advertising copy writer and executive for several American agencies, including BBDO, Normal Craig & Kummel, J. Walter Thompson (JWT), and Scali McCabe Sloves. Managed a radio advertising and production company, Joy Radio. The Joy Golden Papers span the years 1956-2012 and include correspondence, audition records, scripts, print advertisements, design layouts, storyboards, and other records that document Golden's career in print and radio/television broadcast advertising. Formats include audiocassettes, VHS and Umatic videotapes, 16mm and 1/4" reels, and DVDs. Companies represented include Batten, Barton, Durstine & Osborn (BBDO), J. Walter Thompson Company (JWT), Norman Craig & Kummel, Scali McCabe Sloves, and Golden's own company, Joy Radio. Client files include materials for Abe Beame for Mayor, Alpine Lace Cheese, Automated Data Processing (ADP), Blue Cross/Blue Shield of New Jersey, DuPont, E-Loan, Frommagerie Bel (Frobel), MTA, North Fork Bank, Port Authority of New York, Shell Oil, Warnaco and Wilmington Trust. Families originally from Carteret and Moore Counties, N.C. Correspondence; legal files, including deeds and wills; photographs; many genealogical materials; financial papers; postcards; paper currency; two scrapbooks; and school papers, all relating to the Howland and the McIntosh families from Carteret, Durham, and Moore Counties, N.C. Photographs include tintypes, albumen prints, and one daguerrotype. Many legal files pertain to a lengthy court case involving the transfer of family property on Shackleford Banks, N.C. to the federal government. Oversize materials include aerial photographs and land surveys of Shackleford Banks and other family properties, and photostats of early deeds. Though several photographs and all the currency date from the Civil War, the only other original documentation on the families' Civil War activities is a signed oath of allegiance to the Union dated 1865, and a few letters referring at length to the circumstances surrounding the confiscation of one Howland's property in Beaufort, N.C. during the war, and his attempts at legal restitution. William F. Howland (1876-1951) married Mary Elizabeth McIntosh (1878-1964) in 1903. The collection contains much of their correspondence. Other correspondence includes World War I letters from a McIntosh son, Leland Carson. The addition (04-129)(25 items, 1.5 lin. ft.; dated [1870s]-[1960s]) consists primarily of materials, including a scrapbook, photo album, letters, and travel journals, kept by Mary Howland Dawson from the 1950 "Youth Caravan to Germany" sponsored by the Methodist Conference of North Carolina. Also includes two family photograph albums, with images dating back to the 1870s; clippings about various family members; and an historical sketch of Salem United Methodist Church in Garland, N.C. This addition is unprocessed and is not represented in the finding aid.

Lisa Unger Baskin, who assembled this collection of photographs centered on women's history and culture, is a bibliophile, collector, and activist. Collection consists of 514 photographs and other graphic items in a variety of formats typical for the time, chiefly albumen, but also including gelatin silver, cased images, and mechanical prints; there are also small groups of true photographic postcards. Along with titles, dates, and content, data points may include biographies of photographers and subjects, studio addresses, and other notes. Roughly three-quarters of the images were produced by commercial women photographers in the U.S., Canada, and Europe. The great majority date from about 1860 to 1920, and the most common format is studio portraits of white men, women, children, and families. There are also many photographs of well-known women artists, entertainers, intellectuals, and activists of the time, as well as images of women in educational and a variety of work settings, on sports teams, posing with uniforms, guns, and tools, and enjoying leisure activities. Roughly 40 images are portraits of African Americans and other people of color or mixed race. Color images are chiefly limited to hand-tinted images and mechanical prints. Collection consists of Japanese books, periodicals and other printed materials relating to the Japanese student movement of the 1960s and later. The materials derive from the first confrontations of 1960 provoked by the Anpo treaty, through the protest movement's years of crisis and decay in the 1970s, but there are more recent materials as well. They are arranged as originally ordered, by formats. Items of interest include radical left-wing student newspapers, large flyers and smaller protest handouts, special issues from mainstream media outlets, clippings, and North Korean and former Soviet Union Communist propaganda. Notably, the collection includes a full 12-month run of the Japanese magazine, Kisetsu. Protest movement ephemera also includes original writings, chiefly mimeographed essays and manuscript submissions for publication. The collection is strong in material relating to the BUND movement (Kyôsan Shugisha Dômei), the rise of Zengakuren radicalism, and the birth of the Japanese Red Army Faction (Sekigun-Ha). Materials and this collection guide are in the Japanese language. Romanized titles are given for books and serials. The collection is part of a larger gift pertaining to the radicalization of the student movement in Japan, including books, a video, and other items which are now available as part of the holdings of the East Asian Collection in Duke University's Perkins Library.

Reginald Horace Blyth popularized Japanese poetic forms such as haiku and senryū within English-speaking audiences by publishing widely read English translations. Notably, Blyth helped draft the Ningen Sengen declaration, which stated that Emperor Hirohito was a human being and not divine. Blyth also served throughout the post-WWII era as a tutor to Crown Prince Akihito and Princess Michiko. In addition, Blyth was an associate of Zen teacher D.T. Suzuki and other Buddhist practitioners and authors who, along with him, introduced Zen to Western audiences. The Reginald Horace Blyth papers include manuscript drafts, notes, and notebooks for published and unpublished works. Many of the files relate to his books on Japanese poetry, humor, and Zen, as well as to his works about British and American Literature. Other files relate to unpublished works and to research interests about animism, culture and mysticism, the British poet John Clare, language, love, and satanism. The bulk of the Printed Materials series includes an incomplete selection of Blyth's published books as well as newsletters and commentary from the Diamond Sangha in Honolulu.

Companies are primarily based in the United States, but Canadian and French perfumers are also represented, including Andrew Jergens, California Perfume (later Avon), Colgate, Frederick Ingram, Furst-McNess, Johnson & Johnson, Larkin, Lehn & Fink and Richard Hudnut. Poems and testimonials on packaging from Ethel Barrymore, Kate Greenaway, Mrs. Leslie Carter and Modjeska. Acquired as part of the John W. Founded in 1864, the J. Walter Thompson Company (JWT) is one of the oldest and largest enduring advertising agencies in the United States. The London Office first opened in 1899. Collection includes published media reports, corporate documentation, research reports, texts of presentations, correspondence, as well as casting and other production notes that document the Media Department's administrative operations as well as participation in creation of television advertising. Companies represented include BBC, British Telecom, Brooke Bond Oxo, Ford, Golden Wonder (now a subsidiary of Tayto), Kellogg, Kodak, McCann Erickson, Ogilvy & Mather; Rowntree, Scott Andrex (now part of Kimberly-Clark), St. Ivel (now part of Dairy Crest), Superchannel, Thames Television, TSB Bank, and Young & Rubicam.
