The J. Walter Thompson Company, Advertising and Marketing Intelligence Database Records date from 1977 to 1983, with some undated material. The collection contains information on the development and early years of the Advertising and Marketing Intelligence (AMI) database, successor to the Issues Monitoring System (1970s) produced by the New York Times (NYT) Information Bank and the White House; a JWT/NYT advertising and marketing news database (1979) drawn from over 60 major business publications; and AD/KIT, or "Advertising Key Information Tracking System." Available by subscription and via telnet, AMI began in 1980 and tracked news items according to an advertising keyword index. The collection details the conception, announcement, and initial years of operation of AMI with financial data, marketing and management information, marketing research, and slide presentation scripts. In 2018 JWT merged with Wunderman to form Wunderman Thompson. Don Ayers was an advertising executive and creative director at JWT during the 1960s to 1980s, mainly with the New York Office. Collection includes clippings, correspondence, memoranda, notes, and scripts for radio and television commercials. Materials primarily relate to Ford but other clients including Lever Brothers, Planters, and Warner-Lambert are also represented. Acquired as part of the John W. Collection of photocopies of thousands of daily columns on advertising and closely related subjects appearing in major newspapers, primarily the Chicago Sun-Times, the Chicago Tribune, and the New York Times. The most frequently represented authors are: George Lazarus ( Tribune, 1985-1999), Nancy Millman ( Sun-Times, until 1992), and Philip H. Dougherty ( NYT, died 1988 September), as well as Randall Rothenberg, Kim Foltz, and Stuart Elliott, who succeeded Dougherty at the Times. Various guest columnists also wrote occasionally for the NYT. For the time period covered, the files appear to contain most or all of the columns that were published in the three papers. The collection also includes several folders of articles and columns from the Wall Street Journal and other business publications, especially concerning management turmoil and succession at J. Walter Thompson Company in 1987. Acquired as part of the John W. Hartman Center for Sales, Advertising, and Marketing History.

She directed research at the McCann Erickson advertising agency and held the position of Senior Vice President at the J. Walter Thompson Company before forming her own marketing consulting firm, The Rena Bartos Company. Collection consists of speeches and presentations, publications, research, and correspondence related to Bartos' career in the marketing research divisions of McCann Erickson and the J. Walter Thompson Company, spanning the years 1960-1998, with the bulk of the contents from 1975-1991. In 2018 JWT merged with Wunderman to form Wunderman Thompson. Joseph Essig Boyle (1899–1976) was a Vice President and Public Relations Director at JWT from 1948 to 1965. The collection includes clippings; correspondence; reports; black-and-white photographs; texts of speeches and other writings (journalism, poems, novels, short stories); and other printed materials that document Boyle's career in public relations at the Protestant National Episcopal Council and at J. Walter Thompson, as well as materials Boyle used in teaching public relations courses at the School of General Studies, Columbia University. Sidney Ralph Bernstein (1907-1993) was an editor and publisher who worked in a number of positions with Crain Communications, serving as President in the 1960s and 1970s. The collection represents a commemorative history project for the J. Walter Thompson Company's centennial anniversary in 1964. The history was not published. The collection consists of research files created or compiled by Sidney Ralph Bernstein and his research assistant Marianne Keating and include transcripts of interviews; notes and excerpts copied from publications, facsimile copies, correspondence, and printed material; correspondence and memoranda; manuscripts; speeches; indexes; clippings; lists; and chronologies. The collection documents the history of J. Walter Thompson Company through printed materials as well as personal reminiscences, recollections, and evaluations of the company by its executives and other employees. Topics include agency management; agency activities during World War II; and women in the advertising industry. Executives represented in the collection include: James Walter Thompson, founder of the company; Stanley Resor, Thompson's successor as president; Denis Lanigan; Howard Henderson; Norman Strouse; Ruth Waldo; and Sam Meek. Correspondence, 1961-1968

The Correspondence Series documents the planning phases of the project and the selection of Sidney Bernstein from a pool of prospective authors. Company executive Milton Moskowitz was primarily responsible for arranging the project but the Executive Committee approved all aspects of it. Bernstein's and his assistant Marianne Keating's research activities are described throughout the series. The correspondence includes biographical material about various company leaders, including William James Carlton and Stanley B. Resor, and information about the 1918 tax law case against the J. Walter Thompson Company.
