Also contains a comic called "Jane" published by Mick White, 1941, which shows a naked woman at an Royal Air Force decontamination center being ogled by various soldiers.

Includes 1912 letter to author Margaret Pollock Sherwood in which Bruce Barton, then Managing Editor of The Housekeeper magazine, praises Sherwood's work and asks if she would consider submitting stories to the magazine. Circa 1915 reprint of tract "The Creator of a Correspondence Church" written by Barton and published in Associated Sunday Magazines; Letter, 1949 to journalist Julien Elfenbein in which Barton mentions the potential power of the Sears catalog as a pro-American propaganda tool in Russia.                   European tourist travel negatives, between 1910-1915

                  This early 20th century collection of 34 nitrate sheet negatives features black-and-white travel images taken mainly in European cities. Subjects chiefly focus on popular tourist landmarks such as gardens, parks, bridges, buildings, and statuary. The travelers seem to be all women and at least one young child. Locations identified by library staff include Paris and Bruges, but other locations are unidentified, as are the photographer and subjects. It is assumed that some locations are in London or England, as one of two commercial photograph processing envelopes from the London firm Selfridge's accompanying the negatives is marked "English trip 1913." The negatives were sized 3 5/8 x 4 7/8 inches. The original negatives have been deaccessioned and only exist in digital form.

                    Robert M. Behr was a travel agent and tour guide who worked for Alaska Airlines and American Express, based around Oakland, Calif. The collection consists primarily of print advertisements from travel magazines and San Francisco-based newspapers (mainly San Francisco Examiner and San Francisco Chronicle), as well as promotional mailings, brochures, and catalogs. Airlines comprise the largest portion of the collection, but airplane manufacturers, automobiles, railways and cruise/steamship lines are also represented. Companies represented include Airbus, American President Lines, Amtrak, Beechcraft (Textron), Boeing, Chrysler, Ford, General Motors, Hertz, Holland America, Lockheed, Martin, Matson, McDonnell Douglas, Pan Am, Princess Cruises, Royal Caribbean, Southern Pacific, TWA, United Airlines. Travel destinations focus on Disney and Las Vegas properties including Walt Disney World, Disneyland, Bellagio, Caesars Palace, MGM Grand, and Wynn.                     The Bedinger and Dandridge families were based in Virginia, West Virginia, Kentucky, Ohio, and New York. Collection consists of journals, correspondence, poems, photographs, scrapbooks, literary writings, legal and financial records, and other papers of the Bedinger, Dandridge, Washington, Rust, Clay, and Stephen families of Virginia, West Virginia, Kentucky, and Ohio; and of the Cornwall, Lawrence, Mitchell, Bowne, King, and Southgate families, of Connecticut, Maine, and New York, primarily created or collected by Caroline Danske (Bedinger) Dandridge. The papers fall into six classes: journals and fragments of journals of Danske Dandridge (1864-1909) in 23 volumes, writing notebooks of her daughter Violet Dandridge in 12 volumes, and journals of Henry Bedinger (1830s) and Daniel Bedinger (1811); correspondence and materials on Ohio, Kentucky, New York, Virginia, and the northern Shenandoah Valley from the Revolutionary period through the Civil War; extensive family correspondence, genealogies, and memoirs used in writing Bedinger family histories; papers of Henry Bedinger, the American Minister to Denmark in the 1850s; poems, reviews and literary correspondence of Danske Dandridge, and poems and prose of her father and daughter; and horticultural writings of Danske Dandridge.                     A letter from Cooper County, Missouri, July 38, 1851, from Lawrence Berry Washington, describes an ocean voyage from California by way of Panama, gives a picture of Havana, Cuba, and discusses American filibustering and Spanish rule, and goes on to tell about the Missouri frontier. He speaks very negatively about the the abolition movement.

                    Kristin Bedford photographs, 1930s-2018

                    Kristin Bedford is a photographer based in Los Angeles. The 172 color photographs taken by Bedford from 2012 to 2018, derive from three projects: "Be Still: A Storefront Church in Durham," which consists of images of African American worshippers and their pastor in Durham, North Carolina; "The Perfect Picture," images from the multi-racial Peace Mission Movement religious community, founded by Father and Mother Divine in the 1930s, and the community's estate, Woodmont, near Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; and Bedford's latest work, "Cruise Night," a photographic essay on the lowrider community in Los Angeles, California. The "Perfect Picture" prints are accompanied by a variety of related materials (1930s-1990s), including movement publications and print ephemera, historical photographs, a CD of sermons, memorabilia, and other items; materials in this project speak to race relations in the 20th century, the civil rights movement, and African American religious culture. All three projects include a set of large color inkjet exhibit prints as well as a duplicate set of smaller handling prints, and an essay written by the photographer for each project.                     Marion Belanger photographs, 2001-2012

                    Collection comprises 25 black-and-white and 48 color photographs taken from 2001 to 2012 by Marion Belanger, documenting the intersection of natural and human-built environments. Belanger's series "Everglades," taken in Florida between 2001-2004, presents images of wildlife and natural landscapes affected by the impacts of tourism, agriculture, migrant worker housing, construction, and activities of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and the U.S. Army. Her portfolio "Rift/Fault," shot between 2006-2012, documents zones in California and Iceland where the San Andreas Fault and the Mid-Atlantic Rift exist - visibly or invisibly - alongside human environments; subjects in this series include housing developments, monitoring stations, geologic features and landscapes, coastal roads, and geothermal structures such as greenhouses. The digital inkjet prints in both series measure 13 or 13 1/2 x16 inches. Both projects were published as photobooks (2009 and 2012, respectively).                             Malcolm Bell papers on the Attica Prison uprising, 1968-2023

                            Malcolm Bell (1931- ) is an author, lawyer, and whistle blower; he was formerly a prosecuting attorney for the State of New York's Department of Law task force investigating the September 1971 Attica Prison Uprising. Collection comprises Bell's extensive investigative notes, witness statements, legal memoranda, trial records, correspondence, writings, clippings, subject files, and audio recordings related to the Attica Uprising. Also included are drafts for Bell's book, both written and electronic, The Turkey Shoot: Tracking the Attica Cover-Up, a documentary video, Ghosts of Attica, and ephemera such as programs and fliers. Subjects include events during the uprising, the subsequent cover-up, investigative efforts, and legal cases; Attica anniversary events; activism on behalf of Attica Uprising victims; and related topics such as police violence, political corruption in New York State, African Americans in the prison system, the U.S. legal system in general, and the effects of systemic racism in the U.S. Correspondents include Tom Wicker, Donald Jelinek, and Heather Ann Thompson, as well as N.Y. State officials. Includes a group of 18 audio recordings from November 1975 of Malcolm Bell and Donald Jelinek in conversation one-on-one about the Attica uprising and their involvement at the time.                             Max Belcher (1944- ) is an American-born photographer with interests in portraiture, vernacular architecture, and racial and immigrant identity. This collection of his work comprises black-and-white and color contact sheets, study prints, and fine prints of Belcher's projects based in Canada, Liberia, the Dominican Republic, Israel, Vietnam, and the United States, in particular New York City, Massachusetts, and the Southern States. Three projects are well-represented in this collection: (1) American People: Portraits from the Philadelphia Community in the Dominican Republic, (2) Claiming Place: Biracial American Portraits, and (3) A Land and Life Remembered: Americo-Liberian Folk Architecture.                               William Bell photographs, 1872

                              William Bell was a photographer from Philadelphia. He was employed in 1872 by the U.S. Geographical and Geological Explorations and Surveys West of the 100th Meridian, a United States Army survey team. Collection includes sixteen gold-toned albumen prints, printed from negatives made by William Bell on the Wheeler Expedition of 1872. Fourteen photographs are from Arizona, two from Utah. Primary subjects include landscapes of the Grand Canyon and Colorado River. Some of Bell's photographs from this expedition were used for prints in George M. Wheeler's Report Upon United States Geographical Surveys West of the One Hundredth Meridian...(Washington: GPO, 1875-1889). In the field Bell prepared his own dry-plate negatives, a photographic process somewhat uncharacteristic for his time. he This process allowed him to store prepared plates longer than his contemporaries, who used wet plates, but would have also increased the exposure times for his plates.

Correspondence and business papers reflecting the major part played by Bell and his family in the economic development of central Pennsylvania and other areas. Among the subjects dealt with are the building of internal improvements, the charcoal iron industry in the Juniata Valley, land titles and speculation, and early growth of the Pennsylvania Railroad under J. Papers of the Civil War period illustrate the impact of the conflict on the business community in the North, and on the people of Pennsylvania during Confederate raids and invasions. Some papers relate to tests of Pennsylvania iron made at the Washington Navy Yard by Captain Dahlgren, to Bell's service as agent of Jay Cooke in floating Federal loans in Pennsylvania, and to the effect of the war on the banking system. Included are two early railroad broadsides from Bellefontaine and Indiana Railroad and Union Pacific Railroad (1856 and 1867).

Business and personal correspondence of four generations of the Biddle and Simpson families of New Bern, N.C. Most notable are the papers of John Simpson (1728-1788), locally a prominent Revolutionary figure; his son, Samuel; and his great-grandson, Samuel Simpson Biddle (1811-1872). Topics include financial affairs, including deeds, property in Boston, and the shipment of goods; activities of the Baptist Church in the New Bern area; agricultural and business interests; education at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill; and children's education in the 19th century. Many letters were written during the Civil War and revolve around the activities of S.S. Biddle, Jr. and James W.                                         Pre-Civil War letters refer to a mercantile firm in which the Biggs family had an interest. Two letters are from Cushing Biggs Hassell. Wartime correspondence in cludes letters, concentrated in 1864-1865, of two sons, Henry A. and William Biggs, describing service in the 17th North Carolina Regiment and Manley's Battery near Petersburg and Wilmington. There is no material in this collection concerning Biggs's political career. His letters to his wife are personal in nature. There is a brief diary begun by Biggs's daughter, possibly Lucy or Della, in 1854 during a visit to Washington, which largely records household duties and financial accounts.

                                                Bert Cole Advertising System collection, 1897-1926

                                                Bert Cole (1869-1958) was a circus performer, announcer, and advertising agent who developed a marketing scheme called the Bert Cole System in which circus elephants were draped with business advertisements during circus parades and local events. Collection includes black-and-white photographs and postcards, receipts and licenses, and correspondence that document Bert Cole's advertising business while working with circuses including the Charles Sparks Circus and the Hagenbeck-Wallace Circus. The banners promoted a variety of businesses, including automobiles and automobile dealers; automotive tires; banks; flour and other food products; local retail and clothing stores; and tobacco products. Many of the photographs are annotated with the date and place the photograph was taken. Circus performers and clowns identified in the photographs include Bert Noyes, Louis Plamondon (1872-1934), Lon Moore (1865-1920), and Mickey McDonald, as well as images of Bert's father, circus owner George S. Cole, with his elephant-based advertising service he ran prior to Bert assuming the practice under his own name. Also represented in the photographs is the elephant Mary, part of the Sparks rail show, notable for having been executed in 1916 after killing her handler. Photographs depict locations throughout the South and upper Midwest, including Texas, Florida, Mississippi, Indiana, Wyoming, and Little Big Horn, Montana. Acquired as part of the John W.                                                     Frances Power Cobbe was an Irish writer, social reformer, anti-vivisection activist, and leading women's suffrage campaigner. Cobbe wrote the first letter to Mrs. Madden, undated but probably in 1886, regarding vivisection along with the poor treatment of horses. She wrote the second, undated, letter to Miss Galtz[?], regarding a planned visit.

Keenleyside, who was first secretary of the Canadian Legation in Tokyo (1929-1936). Multiple additions of personal papers assembled by the Paul and Mary Clyde complete the collection.

                                                      Cochrane Family papers, 1777-1957 and undated

                                                      Arthur Auckland Leopold Pedro Cochrane served in the British Navy from 1839-1886, where he fought in the Anglo-Chinese war and rose to the rank of admiral. He was also instrumental in administering the Trinidad Lake Asphalt Company during its early years. His brother, Ernest Grey Lambton Cochrane was also active in the Royal Navy from 1847-1873, participating in the British campaign to suppress the slave trade in West Africa during the 1860s. He was also a landowner and landlord of the Redcastle Estate in County Donegal, Ireland, and served in his later years as High Sheriff for County Donegal. The collection contains correspondence, legal and financial documents, notes and writings, notebooks and diaries, clippings, printed books and pamphlets, photographs, maps, charts, diagrams and technical drawings pertaining to the lives and careers of Arthur Auckland Leopold Pedro and Ernest Grey Lambton Cochrane, and to the Trinidad Lake Asphalt Company. The papers span the years 1777-1957, with the bulk of the collection being dated from 1850-1905, and document the naval careers of Arthur Auckland Leopold Pedro Cochrane and Ernest Grey Lambton Cochrane, the role of the Cochrane family as landlords in Western Ulster, and the development of the colonial asphalt industry in Trinidad during the 19th century.

                                                        Correspondence, 1914-1916, circa 1890s-1920s Box 1

                                                        Contains two letters, one from Conolan's father (Francis) and one from her step-mother (Louise). The letter from her father appears to be in answer to questions that Conolan had and addresses her birth and family history. The letter from her step-mother was written about a year after her father's death and addresses grieving, settling debts, and Conolan moving to the countryside. Also included with this material is an empty envelope addressed to Conolan and two unused pieces of paper with Conolan's Medfield Street address at the top.

Walker," and "Mr. Mitchell." Abortion was legal in Conn. until 1821, when it became the first state to explicitly outlaw the practice. The text includes: "Mrs. Green began to testify on Friday night--but was taken sick & had to be sent home. That she was really sick, there can be no doubt. But whether it was the journey &c. or agitation & excitement as to what she was required to testify--is still a mystery. I want you to send me her history & that of her family ... so as to shape our cross examination.... She is expected to testify that the abortion matter was all gotten up by Genl W--without there being any truth in it--She began by saying that Genl W. called on her at Naugatuck [Conn.]....                                                                   James (Jimmy) Edward Creech (1944-) is a former United Methodist minister and activist. He was an ordained elder in The United Methodist Church from 1970 to 1999, serving as a minister in North Carolina and Omaha, Nebraska, and as the North Carolina Council of Churches' liaison with the North Carolina General Assembly. In 1999, The United Methodist Church revoked his credentials of ordination following two church trials for defying this prohibition by conducting covenant ceremonies for two same-sex couples in 1997 and 1999.                                                                     Henry Coullaud photograph albums of China, 1900 August 14-1901 September 18

                                                                    Henry Coullaud (1872-1954) was a French military physician. The two albums contain 120 black-and-white photographs taken by Coullaud during the Boxer Rebellion in China, 1900-1901. Album 1 starts with images of the French naval personnel with whom he travelled, French ships, and the allied fleets, along with scenes taken in the ports of Djibouti, Port Said, Singapore, and Taku (Dagu). The rest of the images offer views of the cities of Tianjin, Baodingfu, Dingzhou, and Zhengdingfu. There are images of many types of buildings, markets and merchants, river life, modes of transportation, entertainments, a public execution, and images of rural life and work. There are a number of group portraits of Chinese and French officials and wealthy Chinese men, as well as a group portrait in a French medical clinic, and officers putting on a theatrical play and celebrating July 14th. There are also some photographs of urban and rural Chinese women.                                                                     Carl V. Corley (1921-2016) was a white novelist and illustrator who served in the Marines during World War II. Collections contains the writings, drawings, scrapbooks, notebooks, correspondence, and published materials that document Corley's career and artistic output of Corley. The collection also includes typescripts and manuscripts of published and unpublished works of gay fiction, southern history, and heterosexual and homosexual erotica, some of which is in the form of comic books or graphic novels. The Sabina Allred Allen Collection of Carl Corley Papers includes correspondence and illustrations from Corley.

The series "Beyond Gitmo" consists of environmental portraits of 10 men once held at Gitmo who have since been cleared of charges and freed.
