This collection (20,700 items, 35.5 linear feet, 1937-1984, bulk 1970-1984) includes office files and correspondence, and records from various organizations, such as the Young Social Democrats and the Youth Institute for Peace in the Middle East. Of note are some materials on prominent socialists, including Eugene Debs, Norman Thomas, and Carl Gershman. There are also important periodicals and special publications from 1937-1968 documenting American labor history, the Jim Crow Era, and civil rights issues in the 1960s. (96-104)

Collection (1996-0122) (11,500 items; 34.5 lin. ft.; 1944-1996) contains research materials in parapsychology spanning five decades; data and records from numerous parapsychology experiments (1947-1989); correspondence files, which include nearly all important scientists in the field (1944-1996); and various printed materials, among which are several boxes of "psychic healing" literature. Some papers document in great detail professional criticism, disputes, and controversies over several decades.

This unprocessed accession is comprised primarily of published materials (magazines, newsletters, and photocopies and clippings of newspaper and magazine articles) and of a few manuscript items related to women's employment, religious, legal, and domestic issues. The papers document Rev. Alden's feminist activism during the 1970s and early 1980s while she was living in Texas. Rev. Alden's folder titles and original arrangement of items were maintained. This collection is open for use.

Collection consists of original black and white prints (thirty-nine 11x14's and one 8x10) and original color prints (thirty-one 11x14's) taken by Bamberger documenting the closing of the White Furniture Company of Mebane, N.C. These are the original prints used in the production of the book Closing: The Life and Death of an American Factory (1998) by Bamberger and Cathy N. Davidson. There are also proofs, primarily 3x5 machine proofs and 8x10 proofs of images selected as firsts, alternates, and seconds for the book; and related materials. Also included is a dummy of the book.

Collection contains letters to Grace and Winifred Pettaway from family members and their girl and boy friends during the years 1944-1953. They provide a glimpse of college and military life for African Americans during the 1940s and 1950s. The collection also includes photographs, event programs, greeting cards, newspaper clippings, certificates, and speeches.

The ALFA Archives include the organizational records of ALFA as well as other southern radical women's groups. This addition to the ALFA Archives, transferred to the Duke David M. Rubenstein Rare Book & Manuscript Library in May, 1998, documents the financial operations of ALFA as well as providing information about the fund raising endeavors of the organization. The banking records, legal papers, and minutes from finance committee meetings provide documentation of the struggles of the organization to remain financially viable and to raise money in support of various women's issues. The financial and legal records relating to the property owned by ALFA serve to document the organization's attempt to provide a physical center around which Atlanta's lesbians and feminists could congregate and develop a mutually supportive community. This addition has not been processed but is open for use.

The collection documenting the life and religious writings of O.I. Hinson consists of 45 handwritten sermons and outlines of sermons by Hinson, [ca. 1914]-1932; 20 letters written between 1937-1939 and 1946-1947, from Hinson to his brother, Jeremias Enos Hinson; a photograph of Hinson; and a small number of clippings and other miscellaneous papers.

The Jody Jones Hunter Collection of Works by William Styron includes first editions, limited editions, translations, and other editions, many of them autographed or inscribed, of the works of William Styron, along with published articles, correspondence, manuscripts, and related materials. The correspondence is chiefly letters written by Styron to Stuart Wright, the owner of Palaemon Press in Winston-Salem, N.C. and publisher of several limited editions of Styron's work. Also included with the collection is a carbon typescript of Confessions of Nat Turner, with holograph notes, and the original typescript of Styron's recipe for southern fried chicken from The Artist's and Writer's Cookbook (1961).

This collection documents Price's career as a prolific and versatile author. Items include his works of fiction, books containing his contributions, books containing printed encomia, books entirely about Price, books and periodicals containing interviews with and/or articles about Price, books and periodicals formerly owned by Price, audio and video recordings, typescripts, letters, postcards, self-portraits, and photographs.

Collection (acc.#s 92-098, 95-096, 99-337) (17,150 items, 23 linear feet; dated 1963-1999) contains correspondence, research materials, unpublished papers, other manuscripts, files relating to professional associations and journals, printed matter, and talks reflecting Beloff's work in the field of parapsychology. These items reflect Dr. Beloff's connections with parapsychologists throughout the world, including North America, Latin America, Europe, and Asia, including J.B. Rhine. Container lists have not been created for accessions from 1992 and 1995.

The following overview was compiled almost completely from the 1999 accession of the TePaske Papers, although the 1993 accession contains more of the same types of materials.

The Advertising Vertical File contains subject files on a wide range of advertising topics, and is primarily comprised of news clippings, articles, and pamphlets. Topics range from financial information, legal aspects of marketing, employment trends, awards, information on individuals in the industry, media, packaging, trademarks, and marketing research. The file was created and maintained as an internal reference file by the Information Center in JWT's New York Office. Acquired as part of the John W. Hartman Center for Sales, Advertising & Marketing History.

Collection contains materials Few gathered as a student in Germany, and materials relating to his US Army service in WWII. There are guidebooks, newspapers, postcards, Nazi propaganda chiefly from Germany ( 1938), and materials from other parts of Europe. Papers concerning Few's military service include a memo from the War Dept., and items related to Adjutant General's School.

Collection holds personal papers, letters, farm diaries, photographs, genealogy and miscellaneous materials documenting her relationships with family and their years at the family farm, Tranquility.

Collection consists primarily of television commercials, although it includes some radio commercials, which were entered for Mobius awards presented in 1971-1999. Most of the collection is divided into two main series, North America and International. Commercials are judged by product type/category as well as budget size. Also included are brochures and press releases which describe the award process ca. 1970s-1990s (98-156 box 68). There are compilation tapes documenting the award-winning entries for 1990-1997 (98-156 box 69). The collection consists of film footage (sync reels, workprint reels, stock footage, research tapes, etc.) created in the making of the film Clear Pictures, a documentary on Reynolds Price by Charles Guggenheim. Interviews of friends and colleagues were recorded, as well as of Price himself, documenting his range of activity and long literary career. A few paper files and electronic data are also included. See the Reynolds Price Papers also in this repository. The addition (2 items; dated January 23, 1990) contains two 3/4" U-matic videocassette tapes.

Collection contains materials primarily related to the 1984 elections. They include correspondence with public officials (among others), articles, and studies. The materials reflect Brown's interest and involvement in the Democratic Party, national legislation, and issues regarding gay rights.

Collection consists of subject files on a wide range of marketing topics used as reference by J. Walter Thompson Company staff. These topics range from financial information, legal perspectives, employment trends, awards, particular individuals in the industry, media, packaging, trademarks and research; all materials which further reflect the background work and research carried out by J. Collection documents the activities of one of the earliest local women's liberation groups, started during the second wave of feminism, and co-founded by Jeannet. Included are clippings and a number of publications (volumes, pamphlets, newsletters, and other periodicals) relative to the movement, including newsletters from the Lancaster Women's Liberation Women's Center. Topics discussed include sexual harassment, the Equal Rights Amendment, the pro-choice movement, campus activism, women and work, and the National Organization for Women. Other materials document the inner workings and activities of Jeannet and the group, such as correspondence and meeting minutes. The collection documents the activities of the Project, administrative and otherwise. Included are mailing lists (including an electronic file), newsletters, photographs, stationery, program and publicity ideas, old program lists, clippings, materials about other women's history groups, the Triangle Community Foundation proposal, non-profit status information, training materials, awards, past school projects, school visit evaluations, reports and surveys, newsletters, grant information, outreach materials, flyers and press releases, project ideas, and study group materials

The collection contains writings of Anne Firor Scott and materials relating to her academic work in Southern and women's history. The materials primarily refer to her scholarly activities, and include her dissertation, occasional papers, articles, speeches and lectures, book reviews, contracts, conference proceedings and schedules, course materials, newspaper clippings, and other activities related to academia. There is also a file of correspondence written by Anna Lord Strauss (then president of the League of Women Voters) in 1949 and mailed to all members the league. Notes by Scott in this file explain her connection to Strauss, and the circumstances of the correspondence. In addition, there are newspaper articles related to the first and second editions of Scott's book, The Southern Lady. Acquired as part of the Sallie Bingham Center for Women's History and Culture.

Collection documents the artwork and printed promotional materials Robert K. Jeffery commissioned, used, or referenced in diamond advertising. Most items are the output of the advertising agency N. W. Ayer and Son, Inc., often featuring De Beers diamonds and outdoor advertising promotions. Other items are more general to the diamond marketing industry, including marketing statistics, and gemology periodicals. Acquired as part of the John W. Hartman Center for Sales, Advertising & Marketing History.

Primarily letters to Mann from his family and the family of Nathaniel Hawthorne. Correspondents include Sophia Hawthorne, Rose Hawthorne, Una Hawthorne, brother George Mann, mother Mary Tyler Peabody Mann, and Elizabeth Peabody. Topics include family activities and travels, especially comments on Mann's descriptions of San Francisco and the Sandwich Islands [now the Hawaiian Islands]; Nathaniel Hawthorne's death and burial; Abraham Lincoln's death and burial; and opinions about Civil War events, battles, and personalities. Includes a letter from Elizabeth Peabody (undated) describing her two visits to President Lincoln and mentioning General Hitchcock's opinions about Lincoln and the Civil War. This collection documents the professional and creative life of writer and teacher Robert Bausch. Materials include handwritten, typed, and electronic (computerized) drafts of published and unpublished novels and essays, including The Gypsy Man, On the Way Home, Almighty Me, For God's Sake, and A Hole in the Earth; galleys and corrected proofs of his published novels; incoming andoutgoing correspondence--including copies of electronic mail--with writers, editors, readers,students, and family; a few typescripts of works by others; book and movie contracts and royalty statements; andaudiocassette tapes of Bausch's class discussions and readings by authorsGeorge Garrett, Bausch, and Bausch's twin brother Richard Bausch.

The collection consists primarily of first editions, limited editions, translations, and other editions (many of them autographed or inscribed, 1965-1998) of the works of Anne Tyler, delineating her prolific career. Also includes books about or containing contributions by Tyler (1958-1993); issues of periodicals containing her contributions or reviews of her work (1965-1996); and three pieces of her original correspondence (1979-1989).

The files document the council's attempts to marshal churches in N.C. to act on a variety of social concerns, including race relations, poverty, immigration, the death penalty, war and peace, and ecumenism. Special topics include the United Church Women, NCCC Social Ministries, and outreach to migrant and aging populations. The collection includes a scrapbook for the United Church Women, 460 black-and-white and 66 color photographs, 43 color slides, and 60 black-and-white and 142 color negatives. Collection of photocopies of thousands of daily columns on advertising and closely related subjects appearing in major newspapers, primarily the Chicago Sun-Times, the Chicago Tribune, and the New York Times. The most frequently represented authors are: George Lazarus ( Tribune, 1985-1999), Nancy Millman ( Sun-Times, until 1992), and Philip H. Dougherty ( NYT, died 1988 September), as well as Randall Rothenberg, Kim Foltz, and Stuart Elliott, who succeeded Dougherty at the Times. Various guest columnists also wrote occasionally for the NYT. For the time period covered, the files appear to contain most or all of the columns that were published in the three papers. The collection also includes several folders of articles and columns from the Wall Street Journal and other business publications, especially concerning management turmoil and succession at J. Walter Thompson Company in 1987. Acquired as part of the John W. Hartman Center for Sales, Advertising, and Marketing History.

Family and personal papers, primarily Bevington's personal and professional correspondence (1931-2001), which includes letters from Ray Bradbury (1976-1993); typescripts of diary entries (1959-1989); 22 heavily annotated books of modern poetry, and research notes. There are also correspondence and professional records for Bevington's husband, Merle. Other items include one color and 9 black-and-white photographs, a scrapbook, passports, geneology information/records, awards, newspaper clippings, class records, and unpublished manuscripts.

Seven complete and five fragments of handwritten sermons dealing with various Biblical texts and subjects.

Collection consists of typescripts of Rev. Kenneth Johnson's sermons, many containing handwritten notes and accompanying material on which the sermon topic was based. Sermons are numbered and are arranged by date, according to the church Johnson was serving at the time. The 2002 accession also contains card indices of sermons (ca. 3600 items), which arranges sermons by title, topic, and scriptures and texts. Johnson's sermons were delivered at United Methodist churches across North Carolina, including McKendree Chapel, New Mt. Vernon-Shady Grove, West Bend, Oak Summit, Asbury Memorial, Green Street, Saint Andrew's (Charlotte), Central (Mooresville), Leaksville (Eden), First (Newton), Burkhead (Winston-Salem), Aldersgate Methodist (Shelby), and Grace Methodist (Greensboro). Johnson also preached several sermons in Indonesia (1995, 1998).

Collection comprises seven bound typescript volumes containing Lyons' daily accounts of his trips. There are postcards, brochures, and other materials related to his travel that were placed in the volumes. Destinations include Washington, D.C.; New York City; Boston; Nashville; Charleston, S.C.; Jacksonville, Fla.; the 1933 World's Fair in Chicago; the White Mountains; and the Adirondacks. Topics include destinations, the people he meets, hotels, train travel, and scenery. The collection also contains a postcard scrapbook; a pamphlet by James M. Gillis entitled, "The Ku-Klux Klan" (1922); and a bound typescript short story entitled "The Irony of Fate," which fictionalizes Lyons' father's participation in and life immediately after the Civil War. Primarily incoming and outgoing personal and business correspondence, bills and receipts, bank statements, and deeds (1890-1950). The material documents Newsom's real estate activities and Durham N.C.'s economic and urban development from the 1920s-1940s. Also includes financial ledgers; scrapbooks of Newsom's newspaper real estate advertisements; notebooks in shorthand; various Newsom family estate papers; and a poem by Newsom, "To the Men of the Golden Star," read by him at a World War I memorial service held at Trinity College (1919). The collection contains few records of Newsom's tenure as an official of Trinity College and Durham County. (02-102)

Accession 2002-149(778 items, 22.0 linear feet; dated 1971-2001) contains files of abortion, pregnancy, and hysterectomy malpractice cases in which Crist served as a consultant or codefendant along with the Crist Clinic. There is also printed material on reproductive topics. Also includes 2 VHS videocassettes; 6 color slides; 30 black-and-white and 2 color photographs. Primarily consists of Executive Board and Sector and Advisory Groups correspondence, memoranda, and meeting records; financial and planning documents, including grant applications; and workshop, seminar, and presentation materials that document the organization's activities to raise awareness of and promote action on the causes of poverty in N.C. Collection created by the JWT Chicago Office Information Center as a reference and research tool for business use. The term "non-proprietary" is JWT's term for research prepared or collected by the company but not on behalf of specific clients. The collection includes market and consumer research reports arranged alphabetically by subject. A small number of items represent JWT research done, but most were created by market research firms (e.g., Yankelovich, Elmo Roper and Associates), cable TV stations (e.g., MTV Networks), or magazines (e.g., Seventeen, Good Housekeeping), and others. Topics include consumer demographic analyses for the United States, especially of food and beverage products and restaurant services. Marketing to women is a major subject; there is also information on marketing to men, baby boomers, teens, and children. Acquired as part of the John W. Collection consists primarily of manuscripts and research materials related to Turnipseed's writings (1902-1960s), in particular his multivolume, unpublished autobiography I Tried: An Autobiography of Andrew Spencer Turnipseed. The collection documents Turnipseed's ancestry, early life, and roles as a theologian and activist. Includes many folders of personal and professional correspondence (1929-1980s); lectures and sermons (including 13 audio cassettes); course materials; and travel files. In addition, there are subject files on topics such as Methodism; civil rights; race relations and Southern politics; and public education, including higher education for African-Americans in Alabama. Acquired as part of the John Hope Franklin Research Center for African and African American History and Culture.

The Duke University Center for Documentary Studies Literacy Through Photography Records comprise negatives, contact sheets, and written work (generally handwritten or printed observations, comments, stories, poems, drawings) documenting school children’s views of their community, Durham, NC. The materials would be useful to those interested in visual culture, the psychogeography of children, and Durham history, society and living environment, as well as those interested in pedagogy and developing an arts-based curriculum in public schools. The units collected and organized in the Records are LTP class projects, sorted first by format, then chronologically.

The first accession of the collection comprises diaries (39 volumes) written by Ruth Finlay documenting the details of and her emotional reactions to her daily life, activities, behavior, social life, and family life between 1960 and 1994. Topics include her hospitalization, ongoing treatment for, and life following cancer (1985 and onward); her relationships with her husband, children, and grandchildren; and the death of an adult son (December 1988).

The collection consists largely of professional papers including subject and research files, correspondence, and writings. Materials pertain to Hulka's involvement in the education, promotion, innovation, and application of women's and reproductive health. Specific topics include laparoscopy, abortion rights, contraception, professional organizations, medical procedures, and educational materials. The collection also includes examples of medical instruments (some of which were developed and patented by Hulka), especially a variety of international IUDs and other forms of contraception including the eponymous "Hulka clip." Also contains drawings and photographs of surgical procedures; educational and presentation slides; blueprints of medical instruments; and correspondence and essays provided by colleagues and students. The collection contains primarily correspondence and greeting cards, including correspondence with John Craig Wheeler (considered the father of "black holes") on parapsychology and its intersection with theoretical physics. Also includes news clippings and scrapbooks documenting McMahan's life; illustrations she made describing her travels aboard Pacific-traveling cargo ships; several of her self-published children's books; and compilations of her cartoons from "The Meadowlark, " a newsletter published by Carolina Meadows, a retirement community in Chapel Hill, N.C. Acquired as part of the Sallie Bingham Center for Women's History and Culture.

The Victoria Ortiz Papers span the years 1923 to 1999, with the majority of the papers dating from 1960 to 1990. The main collection (2003-0204) comprises materials separated from the Bobbye S. Ortiz Papers and consists of one series; the accession number 2003-0204 was assigned to this grouping. Viki Ortiz's political and intellectual interests can be gleaned from the topics in the Victoria Ortiz Subject Files Series, which has been divided into seven subseries to facilitate its use. The first three subseries contain newspaper and magazine articles, organizational materials, photographs, pamphlets, speeches, and reports related to Cuba, Mexico, and Latin America. Scholars of U.S. anticommunism and student movements in the 1960s may find of interest materials related to Ortiz's 1963 trip to Cuba, taken with 58 other college students in defiance of U.S. policy. Each subseries is organized alphabetically by topic or title.

The J. Walter Thompson Company, Advertising and Marketing Intelligence Database Records date from 1977 to 1983, with some undated material. The collection contains information on the development and early years of the Advertising and Marketing Intelligence (AMI) database, successor to the Issues Monitoring System (1970s) produced by the New York Times (NYT) Information Bank and the White House; a JWT/NYT advertising and marketing news database (1979) drawn from over 60 major business publications; and AD/KIT, or "Advertising Key Information Tracking System." Available by subscription and via telnet, AMI began in 1980 and tracked news items according to an advertising keyword index. The collection details the conception, announcement, and initial years of operation of AMI with financial data, marketing and management information, marketing research, and slide presentation scripts.
