Consumer Reports is a product testing and consumer advocacy nonprofit organization based in Yonkers, N.Y., founded in 1936. Leland Gordon was Professor of economics at Denison University who served on the Board of Directors of Consumers Union from 1942-1949. The Leland Gordon papers include correspondence, manuscript of papers and book chapter drafts for Economics for Consumers, conference proceedings and other printed materials. Topics include consumer education and protection, consumption, economic aspects of burial and funeral practices, packaging and labeling of products, weights and measures, and World War II-era wartime economies. Institutions represented in the collection include Denison University, the National Council of Churches, Office of Price Administration, and Stephens College. Acquired as part of the John W. Richard Stephen Creed was vice-chancellor of New College, Oxford, England. Collection documents the controversy that followed publication of Dr. Seymour J. G. Spencer's article, "Homosexuality among Oxford Undergraduates," in the Journal of Mental Science in April 1959, which received press coverage in England and the United States. The article discussed the psychiatric treatment of such students. Contains Creed's corrected copy of the reprinted article and an excerpt from the July meeting minutes for the Warneford Management committee, where faculty and staff mentioned in the article's acknowledgments expressed their outrage at the unwanted and sensational publicity. Includes Creed's letter to the author following that meeting, which questioned Spencer's research results and approach to writing, as well as Spencer's letters written in response to defend his work.

The oral history project was organized by Sybil Shainwald and the staff of the Center for the Study of Consumer Movements (CSCM) to capture reminiscences of senior Consumers Union staff and others active in the consumer movement. The collection includes articles and clippings; audiocassettes; biographical sketches, lectures, speeches, and other background information; correspondence and memoranda; prject procedures and guidelines; prospective interviewee and contact lists; transcripts of recordings; workflow and legal release forms and other materials that document the establishment and operation of the oral history project. Many of the newsletters collected include the first issue produced by the respective organization. Topics cover general issues of consumer economics, health and safety, as well as consumer issues relating to recovery from the Depression and World War II. Acquired as part of the John W. Ronald Anthony Cross was an American science fiction and fantasy author. Collection includes a wide array of Cross' creative work, including short stories and novelettes, poems, essays, song lyrics, novels, and copies of his published work. In addition there is research he conducted for his published books, and often material related to the publishing process, including tracking sheets, correspondence, contracts, reviews, and royalty statements. Material dated past Cross' death has to do with republishing agreements.

Barrister, politician, literary critic, and author. The John Wilson Croker Papers are organized into the following series: Indexed Correspondence, Non-Indexed Correspondence, and Other Papers. The collection consists primarily of letters from English and Irish politicians and personages to Croker, and provide a rich source of material on Great Britain's politics and government in the 19th century.

The Cronly family included Michael Cronly, Sr., auctioneer and real estate broker of Wilmington, N.C. and his wife, Margaret McLaurin Cronly and their nine children. Collection comprises correspondence, financial and legal papers, writings, bound volumes, clippings and other print materials, and photographs of teh Cronly family of Wilmington, N.C. Topics include auctioneering and real estate in Wilmington, N.C.; Wilmington social life and economic conditions; Civil War experiences; African American life and condtions during Reconstruction; the Wilmington, Charlotte and Rutherford Railway Company; railroad bonds; earthquake of 1886; and the Democratic Party and politics in North Carolina. Includes information on the Beatty, Cronly, McLaurin and Murphy families of North Carolina, and descriptions of Charleston (S.C.), Atlantic City (N.J.), Denver (Colorado), Genova (Italy), and the Hudson Fulton Celebration in New York City (1909). Of note is a detailed account of the Wilmington, N.C. 1898 insurrection and race massacre carried out by white supremacists, written by a woman in the Cronly family, possibly Margaret Cronly; the account is accompanied by a 6-page typed transcript.

The Consumer Reports Eileen Nic papers include Correspondence, project proposals, research reports and other printed materials that relate to air pollution, chemical accidents, environmental policy, hazardous materials and pesticide use and regulation. Organizations and individuals represented in the collection include Ciba-Geigy, Esther Peterson, International Organization of Consumers' Unions (IOCU, later Consumers International) and Union Carbide (relating to the Bhopal chemical accident). Nunn was an economist active in labor issues, officer in the American Civil Liberties Union and the first Director of University Relations at the University of Minnesota. The William L. Nunn papers consist of clippings and scrapbooks that document topics of interest to Nunn as well as occupational events in Nunn's life. Topics include activities of the Liberal Club at the University of Pittsburgh; coal mining and miner unrest in Pennsylvania and suppression by the Coal and Iron Police; diversity in political parties; and clippings reporting events pertaining to civil liberties, censorship and repression. Acquired as part of the John W. Hartman Center for Sales, Advertising & Marketing History.

Henry Philip David (1923-2009) was a pioneering researcher in the field of reproductive behavior and public policy and is known for his longitudinal studies on the psychological aspects of abortion, as well as his extensive international collaboration and research. He founded the Transnational Family Research Institute in Bethesda, M.D., in 1972. Collection includes materials documenting David's professional life and research, as well as his work with the Transnational Family Research Institute and coordinating the Psychosocial Workshops.

Former English Professor at Duke University, and Vice-Provost for Interdisciplinary Affairs. Author of fiction and memoirs, and editor of The Book of Love and Oxford Companion to Women's Writing in the United States. The Cathy Davidson Papers encompass Davidson's various writings, organizational work, correspondence, and materials related to Fred Hampton.

Griff Davis (1923-1993) was a photojournalist, diplomat, and film maker from Atlanta, Georgia. The collection contains photographic materials and papers related to three photo essays illustrated by Davis: one on African American writer Langston Hughes; another on artists Hale Woodruff and Charles Alston; and one on the Palmer Memorial Institute, a private preparatory school for African Americans in Sedalia, N.C. Films in the collection were taken by Davis and include two home movies and six color and black-and-white 16mm films documenting people, politics, and agricultural life in Liberia during William Tubman's presidency in the early 1950s. Completing the collection is a photo album, "Progress in Liberia, Nov. 1949-Feb. 1950," containing twenty large black-and-white photographs, assembled to promote a partnership between the government of Liberia and the Liberia Mining Company. Acquired as part of the Archive of Documentary Arts at Duke University.

Paul Davidson (born 1930, died 2024) is the J. Fred Holly Chair of Excellence Emeritus at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. This collection documents his professional life through his correspondence. It forms parts of the Economists' Papers Archive.

The Davis family, originally of Hampton, Virginia, is a prominent African-American family whose members include authors, journalists, photographers, filmmakers, composers, and educators who have made significant contributions to American history and culture. The collection includes photograph albums, loose photographs, and writings documenting the history of the African American Davis family in Hampton, Virginia from the 1930s to the 1950s as well as family members at later points; it also includes materials related to family history and genealogy that span the period from 1876 to the 1920s. Family members featured within the collection include William Roscoe Davis, Andrew Davis, Arthur P. Davis, Sr., Georgia Campbell Neal, Willie Louise Barbour Davis, Collis H. Davis, Sr., Georgia Louise Davis, Jennie Crosby Davis, Collis H. Davis, Jr., Thulani Davis, Anthony Davis, and Charles Sumner Stone, Jr. (Chuck). Educational institutions attended by family members and documented in the collection include Colby College, Fryeburg Academy, George P. Phenix School, and the Hampton Institute.

Indian-born professional photographer active in the last half of the 19th century; died in 1905. Collection of 51 large albumen and gelatin silver photographs mounted on mat board, taken by professional photographer Raja Deen Dayal, which offer insights into the culture, history, and environment of India in the last decades of the nineteenth century and early twentieth century. The prints range in size from 5x8" to 9x11", and document the 1903 visit of Duke and Duchess of Connaught, which includes marshalling of troops and parades, various archaeological sites, monuments, and natural vistas. Images are arranged by print number, some of which are original and some assigned by the dealer (in brackets). Acquired as part of the Archive of Documentary Arts at Duke University.

Duke University graduate and Methodist clergyman in N.C. Collection consists chiefly of papers documenting Dawson's studies at Duke University's Divinity School, and his professional life as a minister in the Methodist Church. Included are subject files; many sermon texts; correspondence; family history; appointment books; an account book; papers written by Dawson as a student in the Duke University Divinity School, including a B.D. thesis; and an ordination certificate. There is one file folder of legal papers and photographs documenting the Howland-Dawson Gardens Endowment for the Sarah P. Duke Gardens.

Attorney and judge of the Supreme Bench of Baltimore, 1911-1934. Collection includes 10 manuscript diaries, with handwritten entries as well as inserted clippings and ephemeral items, dating from the years 1902, 1903, 1905, 1920-1922, 1926, 1929, 1930, and 1932.

Collection comprises a letter written by "Nonia" on June 16, 1913, regarding how she managed to obtain the Emily Wilding Davison memorial items, including a bulletin for the memorial service, an official program for the funeral procession, and a memorial card. Nonia was likely an upper class woman, for Princess Alice of Teck assisted her in collecting the items; the princess was afraid they would be considered suffragettes. The collection also holds a transcription for the letter.

Collection consists of photography created by Celeste and Reggie Hodges while living in Sembehu and Shenge, Sierra Leone, as Peace Corps volunteers in the 1960s and 1970s. Formats include negatives, prints, slides, and digital scans; all image titles and subjects have been applied by the Hodges. Images depict village life, social and religious customs, agriculture and fishing practices, medical care and treatment, textiles and art, schooling and children's life, and portraits of people. Acquired as part of the John Hope Franklin Research Center for African and African American History and Culture.
