Real estate and travel company founded in 1932 by brothers Herman and Robert Anspach in Highland Park, Ill. Currently part of Valerie Wilson Travel, Inc. Collection spans 1936-2014 with the bulk of materials dating from the 1960s-1980s. Primarily brochures, leaflets and other take-away direct marketing materials advertising resorts, hotels, airlines, cruise lines, and other services and destinations comprising the travel and tourism industry. Also includes newsletters, itineraries, and some correspondence. All continents and ocean regions are represented. Acquired as part of the John W. Hartman Center for Sales, Advertising & Marketing History.

Cynthia Arnson is an author of research on US foreign policy, armed conflict, and human rights in Latin America, and is a former director of the Latin America Program at the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars. Collection contains materials related to research spanning Arnson's career, with primary emphasis on El Salvador and Nicaragua in the 1980s and 1990s and additional emphasis on Guatemala and the broader Central American region in the same period and on Colombia from the 1990s to the 2010s. Materials include: congressional records and proceedings; reports from varied human rights monitoring and advocacy organizations; materials produced by the US Departments of State and Defense, including many declassified documents; and reporting on US foreign policy and events in Latin America by news outlets and intelligence agencies.

The collection consists of approximately 9,000 film feet (about 5.5 hours across 13 reels) of 16mm home movies, shot from the 1930s to the 1970s by Mary Dowdell Ashley. The footage consists primarily of Ashley's family and community life in Montgomery, Alabama and the Gulf Coast area.

The Ashantee (also spelled Ashanti) Invasion of Britain's Gold Coast protectorates began in December 1872. British forces responded with their own expedition and invasion of the Ashantee nation in January 1874, resulting in the Battle of Amoaful and the destruction of Kumasi. Materials in this collection consist of bound volumes and printings of reports, dispatches, and correspondence sent to Parliament during the Ashantee (also spelled Ashanti) invasion and the subsequent British expedition into Ashantee lands. Includes initial reports pre-dating the invasion, compilations of correspondence from the commanding officers leading the British forces, transcriptions of communications from the Ashantee king, negotiations regarding the Ashantee surrender, and reports from the Treasury about the cost of the expedition, both monetarily and in terms of British casualties.

Association for Asian Studies is a scholarly, non-political, non-profit professional association open to all persons interested in East, South, and Southeast Asia. The Association for Asian Studies (AAS) was founded in 1941. The Southeast Regional Conference of the Association for Asian Studies (SEC/AAS) is a non-political, non-profit scholarly organization dedicated to promoting the study of Asia in the southeastern region of the United States.

The Asian Maps Collection comprises maps of Korea, China, and Japan, dated from 1771-1945. Several of the maps are full color, and include woodblock prints.

William Atkinson was baptized on March 8, 1679. He appears to have been an amateur theologian or preacher in Great Britain. The collection consists of a handmade, leather-bound notebook that possibly belonged to William Atkinson. Compact handwriting fills all 96 pages plus the inside front and back covers with extracts taken from the works of contemporary theologians including John Tillotson's sermons, William Nichols's Defence of the Doctrine and Discipline of the Church of England, and Richard Baxter's Now or Never; along with Atkinson's commentary on the extracts and potentially original theological reflections or sermons by him. The choice of extracts, the inclusion of entries on Quaker theology, and the nature of Atkinson's criticism suggest that he took a non-conformist stance against the Church of England. The notebook is undated, but refers to the year 1715 on page four.

A. Stein & Company was a clothing manufacturer founded in Chicago in 1887 by Albert Stein. The collection consists of six posters of advertising line art and copy text templates for use in retail store print advertising campaigns for the Perma-Lift brand of lingerie and women's foundation garments. Acquired as part of the John W. Hartman Center for Sales, Advertising & Marketing History.

The collection houses the personal and professional papers of Josiah William Bailey (1873-1946), Baptist layman, Raleigh attorney, and United States Senator. Chiefly consists of correspondence and print material, as well as smaller amounts of financial records, clippings, volumes, broadsides, photographs, and memorabilia dating from 1833 through 1967, with most items dating from 1900 through 1946. The collection documents Bailey's family, personal, religious, and professional life. Generally, papers prior to Bailey's election to the U.S. Senate in 1931 reflect North Carolina's legal, political, religious, agricultural, social, and economic issues. After 1931, material chiefly pertains to national affairs. Significant topics include: state and national elections and campaigns in the 1920s and 1930s; national defense and the military; veterans; the effects of the Depression on southern states and the U.S. economy and society in general; labor issues; Prohibition; the court system; taxation; the development of the Blue Ridge Parkway and other parks; agriculture in the Southern States; and the New Deal of the Roosevelt Administration. Legal papers offer a sample of case files from Bailey's law office, including a 1920s case involving W.V. Guerard of the Klu Klux Klan. Outgoing personal correspondence contains many references to national and regional issues as well as personal exchanges.

Arthur Barden Graham was a member of the U.S. House of Representatives, of New Bern, N.C. The collection consists of correspondence, reports, speeches, notes, drafts of bills, printed material, and clippings, mostly relating to Barden's work on various House committees, including Education, Labor, Library, and Rivers and Harbors. Major topics include the draft, military installations including Seymour Johnson Air Force Base and Camp Lejeune Marine Base, veterans' affairs, and local affairs and projects of Barden's largely rural district, such as lumbering, tobacco processing, and furniture manufacturing.

Hans Baron was a reknowned German-born historian and scholar of Italian Renaissance history and literature who emigrated from Germany in 1933. Collection includes research notes, writings, and drafts, primarily concerning the Italian Renaissance, humanism, medieval and renaissance politics, Petrarch, Machiavelli, and related topics. There are also materials regarding his most significant monographs, especially for In Search of Florentine Civic Humanism: Essays on the Transition from Medieval to Modern Thought. Papers include writings and correspondence to and from other scholars, including Ron Witt, William Bouwsma, Gene Brucker, and Paul Oskar Kristeller. The main collection has received basic processing. There are also later additions that have not been arranged: these include unsorted research and travel notes, writings, clippings, memorabilia, and correspondence. Some of these materials are related to his emigration from Germany to the United States as a Jewish refugee, and his subsequent teaching and research appointments.

Carolyn Kimmelfield Balleisen (1930-2020) was an attorney in estate and tax law and active member of several nonprofit organizations dedicated to social justice and other issues, including school desegregation, early childhood education, and fair housing. The collection includes materials related to Carolyn Balleisen's professional and community organizing activities, including her involvement with the National Council of Jewish Women; school desegregation in Louisville; education and schooling in Lousiville and Kentucky more broadly; tax and estate law; and other subjects.

Collection consists of 174 postcards with photographs and mechanical prints, featuring scenes and landscapes from locations in what has historically been defined as the Balkans region of Southeastern Europe. Cities represented include: Varna, Bulgaria; Ruse/Rustchuk, Bulgaria; Sofia, Bulgaria; Bitola/Monastir, Macedonia; Negotin, Serbia; Skopje, North Macedonia; Sarajevo; Belgrade, Serbia; Oradea, Romania; Thessaloniki, Greece; Constanta, Romania; Sulina, Romania; Scutari, Albania; and Szegard, Hungary. The assorted postcards contains images of buildings, hotels, shops, government buildings, houses, monasteries, landmarks, and geographic features, as well as scenes of people walking on the street, swimming, sunbathing, shopping, and eating.

Admiral Sir Robert Barrie (1774-1841) served in the British Navy and participated in the Vancouver expedition, 1791-1795; the French Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars; the War of 1812; and served as naval commissioner in Canada, 1819-1834. Collection includes papers relating to Admiral Barrie's experiences in the Vancouver expedition, 1791-1795; the French Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars; the War of 1812; and his service as naval commissioner in Canada, 1819-1834. Included is a small group of material relating to the 31st Regiment of Foot in Florida and Britain during the 1760s and 1770s when the Admiral's father, Dr. Robert Barrie, was surgeon's mate. Correspondents include Thomas Manby and James Macnamara.

Godfrey Barnsley (1805-1873), of Savannah, Ga., was an agent for general import and export brokers of Liverpool, England.

Barrett Outdoor Communications is an out-of-home advertising and communications company based in West Haven, Conn., founded in 1962 by Jack Barrett. Collection consists of promotional brochures and designs for billboard and outdoor advertising structures and services. Companies represented include American Lighting Standards, Deer Valley Enterprises, Holland Outdoor Displays, and Pacific Outdoor Advertising. Acquired as part of the John W. Hartman Center for Sales, Advertising & Marketing History.

Bernard Irwin Barnes was a Methodist minister stationed at churches in West Virginia and Maryland from the 1930s through the 1960s. His papers include his sermon notes and drafts, including the dates and churches where each sermon was delivered; assorted prayers and quotations; and his personal scripture study of First Corinthians.

Barriner family of Poplar Bluff, Missouri. Brothers Clyde Barriner and Woodrow Barriner were members of the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC). Collection includes letters chiefly sent to Sarah Barriner of Poplar Bluff, Mo., from her children and relatives. Letters from her son Woodrow Barriner describe daily activities and camp life in Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) Company 1727 near Powers, Or., from 1933-1934. Also included are letters from Clyde Barriner in Van Buren, Mo.; from Esther Payne in Sumter, S.C., 1940-1941; from Minnie Hanson of Piedmont, Mo.; and from Opal Hill. Family letters typically discuss social life in customs and hardships caused by the Great Depression.
