Suzanne Pharr (b. 1939) is a social justice activist and author. Her papers document her professional life and include writings, speeches, correspondence, interviews, workshop materials, published books, book drafts and production materials, articles related to her research, publicity about her work, and journals documenting her daily work. Cipe Pineles was an Austrian-born Jewish artist noted for innovations in magazine design, illustration and typography, based primarily in New York. Collection includes correspondence, photographs, drawings and illustrations and other design work, paintings, advertising and promotional materials, drafts of manuscripts, recipes, financial records and other printed materials that document Pineles's professional and private life, including correspondence and service orders during World War II. Collection also includes materials relating to a number of individuals: Ben Shahn, Carol Burton Fripp, Edward Sorel, Jay Leyda, John Alcorn, Mehemed Fehmy Agha, Sidney Meyers, Will Burtin and William Golden. Institutions represented in the collection include Alliance graphique internationale, American Institute of Graphic Arts, Art Directors Club, Harvard Graduate School of Design, Lincoln Center, Parsons School of Design and the Pratt Institute. The Preventing Medical Complicity in Torture collection includes research materials, video interviews, and other materials related to the creation and distribution of Martha Davis's documentary films Doctors of the Dark Side and Expert Witness on the participation of psychologists in interrogations and torture of detainees by the United States. Acquired as part of the Human Rights Archive.

The United States Political Ephemera Collection contains campaign materials on both the national and state levels between the years 1856-2008. Materials are mostly related to the Democratic and Republican parties, but include materials from the American Labor party, Greenback party, League of Women Voters, Libertarian party, National Prohibitionist party, and Socialist party, as well as non-partisan materials. Materials include campaign pamphlets, flyers, form letters, newsletters, press releases, booklets, handouts, newspapers, posters, bumper stickers, and buttons.

The Poe Studies Association is a non-profit educational organization of college teachers and other interested persons. It was created to exchange information and ideas relating to Edgar Allen Poe biography and criticism both in the U.S. and abroad. Collection contains such items as the Association by-laws, correspondence, minutes, publications, and an address by Maureen Cobb Mabbott. Correspondence is divided into alphabetical and chronological files whose items discuss the workings of the Association, program arrangements, publications, and research ideas. There are also conference and other administrative files.

Aileen Pippett was a British journalist and author who wrote The Moth and the Star (1955), the first full-length biography published about Virginia Woolf. This collection contains letters to Pippett relating to her research and publication of the biography, sent from various acquaintances or "intimates" of Woolf, as well as some letters from other authors responding to Pippett's published reviews of their work. Forms part of the Lisa Unger Baskin Collection.

Collection comprises five 4x5 inch matted black-and-white palladium contact prints, featuring abandoned or run-down manmade structures in the natural landscape. Locations include the Southwest (Texas, New Mexico, and Arizona) and the Olympic Pensinsula. Acquired as part of the Archive of Documentary Arts at Duke University.

Collection comprises a contract, dated 1865 June 8, made with 28 male and female former slaves for the growing of cotton on the "Plains" plantation in Fayette, Jefferson County, Mississippi. The laborers committed to working every day "from sun to sun," except Sunday, with other possible days off. They were to be paid one quarter of the net proceeds for the crop. The contract was witnessed by O.H. McGinty[?] and signed by executors E.G. Woods and Stephen Ireland; the last name of the deceased owner is illegible. The document was recorded by the sub-commissioner for the Freedmen's Department in Jefferson County, A.M. Brobst[?], on 1865 August 28, with notes regarding the executors, the contract's attachment to a lien, and $45 taxes paid on 15 laborers on August 21.

The Pool Family, including James Christopher and Elizabeth Pool and their three children, were Southern Baptist missionaries based in Nigeria, Liberia, and Texas between 1935 and the late 1970s. The collection also includes materials about foster children that they sponsored. Collection includes correspondence, printed materials, administrative records, photographs, and writings documenting the life and activities of the Pool family, particularly J.C. and Elizabeth Pool, and their lives as Southern Baptist missionaries to Nigeria and Liberia in the mid-20th century. The materials are especially relevant to the history of the Nigerian Baptist Theological Seminary and the Pools' work with the Baptist community in Nigeria.

Joseph Ashby Porter (1942-2019) was a writer and scholar who taught in the English and Theater Studies departments at Duke University and also participated in the university's creative writing program. The collection includes a range of materials related to his career as a writer and a professor of English literature such as drafts and research for his creative and scholarly writings, copies of his publications, notebooks and profoessional materials.

The Powell family—Julius Carlyle Powell, his wife Rosa Powell, and their daughter Mary Hester Powell—was a family of Southern Baptist missionaries who served in Nigeria from 1920 till 1962. The Powell Family Papers include materials related to their missionary work in Nigeria.

The Popsicle was patented in 1923 by Frank Epperson, and sold to the Joe Lowe Company in 1925. Collection contains large and small format printed poster advertisements of Popsicle brand's line of frozen dessert products between 1951 and 1958, and documents Popsicle's marketing efforts during the last decade that the brand was owned by the Joe Lowe Company, prior to its purchase by Consolidated Foods (the brand is currently owned by Unilever). The posters depict promotional tie-ins with circuses as well as the Walt Disney Company; coupon offers; gift incentives for saving product wrappers; contests; and efforts to target children as consumers. Also includes memoranda sent to Popsicle salesmen during 1957-1958.

Porter Advertising, founded in 1945, is an out-of-home advertising company based in Richmond, Indiana. Porter Advertising Billboard Sketches date between the 1950s and 1970s and document the company's poster designs for a wide range of businesses in the region around Richmond, Indiana. The collection includes rough and developed sketches; design drawings for specific businesses and campaigns; generic designs; and billboard mockups for local businesses such as car dealerships; banks and financial institutions; funeral homes; hospitals and clinics; motels; retail stores; restaurants; and others. Acquired as part of the John W. Hartman Center for Sales, Advertising & Marketing History.

Collection consists of the personal and professional correspondence of James Hinton Pou, Sr., lawyer, politician, and land developer of Raleigh, North Carolina. Topics cover late 19th and early 20th century North Carolina politics and legal system, business and land development in North Carolina, the history of Raleigh, N.C. and Wake County, and the Pou-Bailey families.

Portland Advertising Federation was an advertising club formed in 1906 in Portland, Ore. Also known as PAF. Collection comprises seminar materials, including a manual (55 pgs) on the topic, a printed copy of the seminar's opening speech, and a copy of the its evaluation sheet. The seminar was intended to provide a global view of the advertising process. Manual curriculum topics include advertising in the American socio-economic system, scope and organization of the advertising business, the media planning process, the creative process, regulation of advertising, and public relations.

Mark Perlman (1923-2006) was Emeritus University Professor of Economics at the University of Pittsburgh. This collection documents his professional life through his correspondence. It forms part of the Economists' Papers Archive.

Vincent Perronet (1693–1785) was an Anglo-Swiss clergyman of the Church of England, vicar of Shoreham and an early Methodist. This collection contains a scrapbook, loose correspondence, diaries, and other items created and collected by the Perronet family, documenting early British Methodism.

Family based in Morganton, North Carolina, in the late nineteenth and early twentieth century. Collection includes family correspondence, miscellaneous receipts and financial documents, and an account ledger kept by Laura Pearson Ray detailing her financial expenses between 1899 and 1929. Subjects include courtship, family news and events, illnesses, the death and mourning of a child, World War I, and United Daughters of the Confederacy activities. Locations discussed or referenced include Morganton, Fayetteville, Durham, and Chapel Hill, North Carolina, and Clinton, South Carolina.

John R. Pendell was a teacher, Baptist minister, and book salesman of Worcester, Mass. and New York. Collection consists of personal correspondence of several generations of the family of John R. Pendell, teacher, salesman, and Baptist minister, and of the related F. D. Ingersoll and Jeduthan Stevens families, discussing family finances, social life and customs in Massachusetts and New York, the need for education for various members of the family, religion, temperance and prohibition, and the presidential elections of 1884 and 1888.

Lord Pelham-Clinton was the Groom-in-waiting and the Master of the Household to Queen Victoria. Collection houses the papers of Lord Edward William Pelham-Clinton, including recollections of Queen Victoria and Edward VII, diaries, and autograph albums.

Labor leader from Willingboro (Burlington Co.), N.J. Papers concerning the career of Boyd Ellsworth Payton, International Vice President of the Textile Workers Union of America. The papers concern three major aspects of Payton's career: the Harriet-Henderson Cotton Mills strike (1958-1961); his incarceration and writing of the book, Scapegoat; and finally his experiences after being released from prison. Included are genealogical materials, correspondence, legal papers, addresses and writings, miscellaneous items, radio scripts, pictures, and a draft of Scapegoat, entitled Prejudice + Politics = Prison. Other papers include items on the poll tax in the South, as well as pamphlets relating to labor unions and the South, the poll tax, and strikes. Clippings deal principally with the American Federation of Labor (AFL), AFL publicity, South Carolina Federation of Labor Convention, United Textile Workers of America convention, communists, and the Bessemer City strike. A 1929 scrapbook houses clippings pertaining to the southern textile strike in that year, and a 1946 scrapbook contains information on the Danville (Va.) Citizens' Committee, a group organized to fight inflation and high prices in Danville. Formerly part of the Labor Archives Collection. Original box numbers have been retained.

The Pepperidge Farm Company was begun in 1937 by Margaret Rudkin of Fairfield, Connecticut. It is currently a subsidiary of the Campbell Soup Company. The Pepperidge Farm Advertising and Promotional Materials Collection consists of brochures and packets related to promotional incentives, photographs of store displays, proofs, and promotional recipes from the period roughly 1957-1967. Includes photographs of Pepperidge Farm Stuffing and Pepperidge Farm Party Rolls store displays; a display sign for Pepperidge Farm White Bread; color and newsprint proofs for White Bread and Rye Bread; as well as books of prize options for company promotional offers. Also includes a packet of materials detailing the 1966 Advertising and Promotional Program, and a promotional book of recipes authored by Margaret Rudkin. Acquired as part of the John W. Hartman Center for Sales, Advertising & Marketing History.

The People's Mutual Benevolent Association of NC, incorporated 1897 February 20, was a life insurance company with headquarters in Raleigh, N.C. The records of the People's Mutual Benevolent Association of NC, Iredell Division consist of financial files, a small amount of correspondence concerning various matters, and other business papers. They are arranged in rough chronological order. Some of the records may provide information about a 1906 NC Supreme Court Case action of Helen Hay against People's Mutual concerning unpaid dues and reinstatement.

J. M. Pedler was a lecturer. Collection comprises a letter J. M. Pedler wrote to his sister (1864 September 26) regarding his lecturing schedule and his plans to publish a book on "The progress of Theologians and the future of the spiritual philosophy." He asks her what their brother is doing to support "honest old Abe" and states that if the president is not reelected "the country will go to the Devil."

Collection comprises 85 13x19 inch photographic prints and other documents related to the exhibit, "Phone Home Durham, 2015." The images were all taken by 50 residents of Durham County, North Carolina, chiefly with mobile phones but also with handheld cameras, and are mostly color digital prints, with a few black-and-white prints. The photographers focused on urban settings, although there are a few rural images taken in Durham County. The images reflect society and customs in 21st century Durham, with subject content including protests relating to race issues, street scenes, graffiti, abandoned houses, local shops and businesses, industrial buildings, and a few landscapes with trees and sunsets. The exhibit prints are accompanied by exhibit guides and other publicity related to the 2015 exhibition, several photographers' statements, and the original exhibit proposal by Duke University professor and photographer Tom Rankin. The exhibit was co-curated by Aaron Canipe, Alexa Dilworth, Jeremy Lange, and Jim Lee. Acquired as part of the Archive of Documentary Arts at Duke University.

Seventeen United States and British government-produced films on 15 reels, dealing with World War II and dating 1943 to 1946, primarily including films made explicitly to sell war bonds, as well as documentaries, training films, and anti-Japanese and anti-German propaganda.

Thirty-three audiotape reels from Dr. Percival Bertrand "Bert" Phillips, a retired professor from Tuskegee University. Audiotapes consist of materials from Scott B. Smith, Jr. (a Tuskegee student and activist/organizer with CORE and SNCC), Phillips' own lectures, and miscellaneous events. The Smith recordings are from the Mississippi Summer Project of 1964 organized by SNCC, although the source and contents of the recordings are unknown.

Collection comprises 176 commercially-produced stereograph cards dating from 1898-1905, depicting scenes from the Philippine Islands during the Philippine-American War, with a few taken in the U.S. of the embarkation and return of troops. Almost all are in black-and-white, with a few in color. The large majority convey the preparations, armed conflicts, and aftermath of the war, with scenes of battlegrounds including Angeles, Luzon, Malabon, Pasay, Pasig,Taquig, Tarlac, and San Pedro Macati. Other war-related images feature military personnel, officers, troop movements, encampments, hospitals, ruins, dead soldiers, allied native troops, prisons and prisoners. In addition, there are two groups, Places and People, which feature views of ordinary citizens and their dwellings, and places such as markets, bridges, railway stations, rivers, and buildings in Dagupan, Manila, Malabon, Pasay, Pasig, and San Pedro Macati. Almost all the stereographs bear captions, dates, and the names of the publishers, chiefly Underwood & Underwood (New York), C.H. Graves (Philadelphia), Keystone View Company (Pa.), and George W. Griffith (Griffith & Griffith, Philadelphia). Some have the names of individuals, possibly the photographers.

William E. Phillips was an executive and chairman of Ogilvy & Mather and Ogilvy Group advertising agencies. The William E. Phillips Papers span the years 1969-2001 and include writings, speeches and printed materials that document Phillips' career with Ogilvy & Mather.

Francis Wilkinson Pickens (1805-1869) was a white politician, enslaver, and plantation owner of Edgefield, South Carolina. He was the governor of South Carolina from 1860-1862. This collection consists of the political and personal correspondence (chiefly 1809-1886) and legal papers of Pickens and his family, concerning secession, the outbreak of the Civil War, slavery, and other matters. The majority of the material dating from 1863-1864 consists of the correspondence and other records of Milledge L. Bonham, Pickens' successor as governor of South Carolina. The collection includes one volume of plantation records (1839-1864) and several bills of sale for enslaved persons. Correspondents include P. G. T. Beauregard, M. L. Bonham, Braxton Bragg, Joseph E. Brown, Armistead Burt, Lewis Cass, W.M. Churchwell, Jefferson Davis, R.W. Gibbes, Isaac W. Hayne, J.L. Orr, and William H. Seward.

Seven creative projects produced by students in Photographic Memory: Photo Albums, Photobooks, & Zines, taught by Lisa McCarty in Spring 2016 at Duke University. The one zine and six photobooks utilize photographs and ephemera from their personal archives, and document representations of women in art; a morning walk in Durham, N.C.; Duke students at a horse race in South Carolina; the Pan Mass bicycle charity event in Massachusetts; the rapid changes in downtown Durham, N.C.; a ferry service in Hong Kong; and U.S. war memorials. Through their work, the students explored aspects of the interplay of text and image, methods for sequential storytelling, basic layout and design techniques, as well as methods for production and distribution. Acquired as part of the Archive of Documentary Arts at Duke University.

Feminist artist, activist, and educator Irene Peslikis (1943-2002) was born in New York, New York, and raised in different locations in Queens, New York. She was instrumental in a number of influential feminist and feminist art groups, including the New York Feminist Art Institute, the journal Women & Art (co-founded with Pat Mainardi), and the group Redstockings. The Irene Peslikis Papers span the years 1957-2002 and document Peslikis's life as a feminist artist, activist, and educator. The collection is organized into nine series: Feminist Activism, Correspondence, Writings, Personal Files, Subject Files, Education, Art, Printed Material, and Audiovisual Material. Materials in this collection include correspondence, essays, personal journals, exhibit files, artwork in a number of media, personal files, her student files, teaching files, clippings, photographs, journals, pamphlets, and audiocassettes. Frequent and/or notable correspondents include her immediate family: her mother, father, and brother, Michael; and friends Ursula Karau, Alix Kates Shulman, Rosalyn Baxandall, Robin Morgan, Carol Hanisch, Lucinda (Cindy) Cisler, Lucia Vernarelli, Pat Mainardi, Judy Chicago, and Shulamith (Shulie) Firestone.

Olive Pierce (1925-2016) was a documentary photographer based in Massachusetts and Maine. The collection comprises several hundred black-and-white photographic prints taken by Pierce over her long career. The earliest images (1960s) feature landscapes and individuals in Maine, a subject Pierce returned to throughout her life. Other subjects include: political protests in Cambridge, Massachusetts and life in the Jefferson Park neighborhood in Cambridge during the 1970s; high school students in Cambridge (1980s); the lives of Iraqi children in war zones in 1999 and 2003, and protests in the U.S. against that war. Also included are print publications featuring Pierce's photographs; publicity for exhibits and lectures; Pierce's 1987 guide to teaching photography; a video on DVD and audio lecture about her work; some correspondence; unpublished book mock-ups and a memoir/diary; a self-published illustrated partial memoir (2014); approximately 2557 film negatives; and about 40 slides featuring images of her early life and family. Anne Woodbridge Pickford (1930-2004), known professionally as Kaylan Pickford, was a model, actor, and author based in New York, active from the 1970s to the 2000s. Her papers include manuscripts, correspondence, financial records, clippings, black-and-white and color photography, and slides. The collection addresses topics on womens modeling, beauty, and nonfiction authorship. Companies represented include Ford Modeling Agency; Vogue; 50 Plus Magazine; Ambrose Nani and Associates; Little, Brown and Company; Readers Digest; Alfred A. Collection consists of seven creative projects produced by students in the class "Picturing Activism," taught by Lisa McCarty in Fall 2017 at Duke University. The projects utilize archival and contemporary photographs, narrative, poetry, illustrations, digital documents, posters, and oral history interviews in digital audio format to explore themes related to activism, cultural experiences, and visual culture. Subjects include murals in Durham, N.C.; activism in Alamance County, N.C.; African American women, racism, and political activism; environmental crises and activism through photography; pit bull rescues and animal rights; and Chinese cooking as cultural expression. Some of the archival photographs are from the Rubenstein Library's collections. Aquired as part of the Archive of Documentary Arts at Duke University.

Collection consists of a photograph album containing 25 developing-out gelatin silver prints of early airplanes and aviators. The album is labeled, "Aero Meet, Lambert Field, St. Louis, Mo., Oct. 1910," and the photographs were taken during this St. Louis Aero Club's meet. The images range in size from 6.25 x 4.5 inches to 7 x 5 inches. Fifteen photographs include views of one or more Wright Brothers' biplanes or parts of them. There are three views of the Bleriot monoplane. Three photos include Theodore Roosevelt, one in a biplane. Aviators pictured include Achibald Hoxsey, French pilot Alfred LeBlanc, Walter Brookins, and Ralph Johnstone. All of the Wright biplanes that are clearly discernible in this album appear to be the Model A or what has been referred to as a transitional model. One negative is available.

The Pilot Mills Company was a cotton textile mill based in Raleigh, North Carolina and founded in 1892. Files in the collection include correspondence (1892-1918), legal records (1892-1922), financial records (1890-1971), plans and blueprints (1890-1971), printed material (1906), and other records relating to the mill's construction and equipping, its ownership, and its financial operations. Persons represented include co-founder William Holt Williamson.

Writer from Weldon, North Carolina. Correspondence, drafts and proofs, typescripts, notebooks, clippings, speeches, and photographs concerning the life and works of North Carolina novelist Ovid Williams Pierce. Papers chiefly relate to the development and publication of the following novels: "Judge Buell's Legacy," "On A Lonesome Porch," "The Devil's Half," "The Plantation," and "The Wedding Guest." The correspondence is restricted, and chiefly consists of letters between Pierce and his friends and literary colleagues. The clippings mainly refer to the publication of Pierce's works. Also included is a volume entitled "Cultural Change in Eastern North Carolina as Reflected in Some of the Novels of Inglis Fletcher and Ovid Pierce."

Pioneer Tailoring Company was a direct-to-consumer manufacturer of tailor-made menswear, based in Chicago and active approximately from the 1900s-1960s. Collection consists of a sales representative's wooden case that held order forms; measurement and tailoring instructions; stationery; measuring devices; sales instruction and promotional literature; and fabric samples. Sales representatives would meet clients, take measurements and note fabric choices, collect deposits and forward the information to a factory in Chicago that would make the suit or overcoat to the client's measurements and specifications, then ship the finished products back to the customer. William N. Pile was an Adventist minister, author and editor. Collection comprises a letter Pile wrote (1894 July 21) to Bro. Goodell regarding space for tents at a camp meeting. He complains that others do not wish to move their tents in order to accommodate his tent.

Charlotte Demonte Phelps (born 1933) is a professor emerita of economics at Temple University. This collection primarily documents her professional life through her correspondence, writings, research, and professional and faculty activities. It was acquired as part of the Economists' Papers Archive.

Family active in Louisburg, Franklin Co., N.C. and also in Nash Co., N.C. Correspondence, accounts, diary (1869), bills, deeds, wills, legal documents, and other papers (largely 1829-1897). The bulk of the collection relates to Thomas A. Person and his family, and includes letters written from Harrison Co., Tex., and New Orleans (ca. 1850s); student letters from various North Carolina schools (1835-1860); letters of Confederate soldiers concerning military life; and family and business letters with Civil War reminiscences. The early material mostly concerns Thomas A. Person's father, Presley Carter Person, of Louisburg, N.C., and the settlement of his estate. Later material concerns patent medicines manufactured by a member of the family. Other correspondents and names mentioned include W. P. Montgomery, Harriett Person Perry, Levin Perry, Theophilus Perry, Jesse H. H. Person, Joseph Arrington Person, M. P. Person, and Willie Mangum Person. Addition comprises primarily land deeds and surveys, other deeds of sale, receipts, personal wills, and other financial information. Also includes personal correspondence and memory books. An 1834 deed of gift to John W. Harris from P. C. Person includes five named slaves, one gray horse, 12 head of cattle, and 12 head of sheep. An 1808-1864 ledger book of Presley Person includes Person family genealogy and names and birth dates of his slaves and of the slaves owned by his son, Thomas A. Person. Other names mentioned include Matthew Culpepper, Arthur W. Person, Prudence Person, and W. M. Person.

The collection comprises a photograph album containing 127 black-and-white photographs (several are hand tinted; most are 4 1/2 x 6 inches) mounted on 22 boards. The album probably belonged to Friedrich Carl Peetz, most likely an officer in the German Navy (Kaiserliche Marine) and crew member of the S.M.S. Hertha during the Boxer Rebellion in China, 1900. The images were mostly taken in Tsingtao (Qingdao), Chefoo (Yantai), Hong Kong, Peking (Beijing), and Shanhaiguan. The photographs document the German involvement in the Rebellion and primarily depict damage to the Taku Forts, German ships (all are identified) and crew, and temples and other historic sites visited by the Germans in Beijing and in other locales in China. Photographs have German captions written in pencil.

Collection comprises promotional materials for Pepsi's "Family Case" (24-pack holder). Includes correspondence between Pepsi Cola Company and Monroe Paper Products Company, order forms, five gelatin silver photographs, two pamphlets, and various newspaper clippings.

Bliss Perry, was an American literary critic, writer, editor, and teacher. Collection comprises a four volume set of a 1937 typescript transcription made for Clifton Joseph Furness of Whitman materials offered for sale by Bliss Perry. Each volume in the collection (there is no volume 3) has a detailed table of contents.

Emmeline and Frederick Pethick-Lawrence were British socialist activists best known for their involvement with the suffragist movement. The collection consists of some correspondence; printed pamphlets and literature collection by the Pethick-Lawrences, as well an Official Programme of the Great Demonstration of Suffragettes in Hyde Park in 1910; and copies of the Printed Statement of Claim and Further Particulars of Statement of Claim following protests by suffragettes in London which resulted in broken windows, particularly accusations of incitement by the defendants (including the Pethick-Lawrences) following speeches, published circulars, newsletters, and meetings of the Women's Social and Political Union in 1911-1912.
