Bruce Nicklas papers, 1891-1996

Bruce Nicklas is the Arthur S. Pearse Distinguished Professor Emeritus in the Department of Biology. Nicklas spent a large majority of his professional career at Duke, starting as an associate professor of Biology in 1965, and later served as chairman of the department of Biology from 1983-1986. With his research focusing on cell biology and chromosomes, he has received National Institute of Health grants to serve as a principal investigator of the Analysis and Control of Chromosome Movement. This collection consists of article reprints, including an article by German biology Walther Flemming, photographs, and VHS tapes of presentations, including a presentation of his 1995 E.B. Wilson Award.

Nine certificates for war bonds, issued by the Banque de France, Ministre des Finances, and Le Gouverneur Général de l'Indochine. Some are blank, while others are issued to specific individuals or to a generic "M. Perret." Most feature patriotic French imagery, with the exception of the certificate from the Gouverneur Général de l'Indochine.

Dr. Samuel DuBois Cook (1928-2017) was a political scientist who became Duke University's first African American professor in 1966. He also served as president of Dillard University from 1975 to 1997. The Samuel DuBois Cook Papers contains Cook's speech files, drafts and copies of Cook's writings, and other assorted papers including correspondence and subject folders for his research and writings on Benjamin Elijah Mays. Brouillard Communications, a division of JWT, was established in 1973 and specialized in business-to-business advertising and corporate communications. Brouillard closed in 2009. Collection consists of two alphabetical information and reference files for business category and individual company materials. Includes correspondence, research reports, clippings, tear sheets, printed corporate materials such as annual and quarterly reports, new business and client presentations. In May 1969, the Black Studies Committee submitted and received approval for the Black Studies Program from the Undergraduate Faculty Council of the Arts and Sciences (UFCAS). Walter Burford was named program head in 1970. Since its creation the program and eventually department has undergone various name changes. Some previous names include Black Studies Program, Afro-American Studies, African and Afro-American Studies, and African and African American Studies. Materials and topics in the collection include course materials, faculty recruitment, committee work related to Black Studies proposals and to the program's departmental status, budgets, symposiums, and printed matter relating to similar programs and problems at other schools.

Alex Harris photographs and papers, 1970-2019

Alex Harris is a documentary photographer, author, and professor emeritus at the Center for Documentary Studies in Durham, North Carolina. The over 700 black-and-white and color photographs in the collection span his career, and include projects exploring the landscapes and peoples of Alaska, the American South, New Mexico, and Cuba; portraits of older reading volunteers and students in Philadelphia; students on strike at Yale University; counter-culture people at a Rainbow Gathering in Arizona; the artist's son tethered to his game device; elderly people living on their own in North Carolina; the interior of author Reynolds Price's home; and movie production sets in the South. The gelatin silver and inkjet prints range in size from 8x10 inch reference prints to 24x36 inch exhibit prints. Harris's professional papers document his collaborations with other photographers and writers on books and exhibitions, including anthropologist Gertrude Duby Blom, naturalist E.O. Wilson, and South African photographers; they also cover his long career at Duke University, as teacher, author, and co-founder of the Center for Documentary Studies and its publication, DoubleTake. In addition to the paper records, there are many recorded oral histories and interviews. Acquired as part of the Archive of Documentary Arts at Duke University.

Chris Johnson farmworker photographs, 1990s

Collection comprises 124 black-and-white digital photographic prints taken by North Carolina photographer Chris Johnson, portraying North Carolina farmworkers and migrant laborers in work settings as well as in their field camps and homes, many of which are revealed as dilapidated and unsanitary. Several series document labor organization and protests, including a five-year strike protesting working conditions for Mount Olive Pickle company workers. Other subjects in the images include the children and families of the farmworkers; volunteer teachers and organizers, some of whom are from the organization Student Action with Farmworkers; tobacco and Christmas tree growing in North Carolina; and street scenes from the border crossing areas of Brownsville, Texas and Matamoros, Mexico. Acquired as part of the Archive of Documentary Arts at Duke University.

Judy Malloy is a poet and an early creator of online interactive and collaborative fiction. She is a founder of the Arts Conference on the WELL, and wrote Uncle Roger, the first online hyperfiction. Collection includes documentation and materials from Malloy's publications and programs, including Uncle Roger and its name was Penelope, as well as materials from her nonfiction research, including her 2003 book, Women, Technology, and Art. Also includes exhibition files and correspondence files from Malloy's career as an artist, both from creating artists books and from her work in new media and hypertext. The collection contains information on the development and early years of the Advertising and Marketing Intelligence (AMI) database, successor to the Issues Monitoring System (1970s) produced by the New York Times (NYT) Information Bank and the White House; a JWT/NYT advertising and marketing news database (1979) drawn from over 60 major business publications; and AD/KIT, or "Advertising Key Information Tracking System." Available by subscription and via telnet, AMI began in 1980 and tracked news items according to an advertising keyword index. The collection details the conception, announcement, and initial years of operation of AMI with financial data, marketing and management information, marketing research, and slide presentation scripts. Frederick Edwards was an Episcopal clergyman and president of the American Society for Psychical Research. Also includes letters, 1933-1935, commenting on Franklin Roosevelt, the New Deal, and the social effects of the Depression. Includes World War I letters and also poetry of Edwards' son, Frederick Trevenen, who died during the war.

Les Brown Scores collection, circa 1944-1953 and undated

Les Brown (1912-2001) was a 1936 graduate of Duke University, where he led the dance band the Duke Blue Devils. Under the name Les Brown and His Band of Renown, the band would achieve professional success in the 1940s and beyond, including a long tenure as Bob Hope's band. The Les Brown Scores Collection chiefly contains manuscripts of 329 jazz big band charts composed and/or arranged for Brown's band, the majority of which are undated, but with some dated between 1944 and 1953. While some charts comprise both a score and complete parts, most are either the score only or incomplete parts only. One additional folder contains a concert program and press clippings related to Brown's performance at Duke University in 1985.

Collection comprises 39 digitally printed color photographs selected from a project by photographer Eliot Dudik, "Road Ends in Water," which documents the expansion of U.S. Route 17 in South Carolina and the landscapes, buildings, inhabitants, and way of life in the areas affected by this highway project. Images include house interiors, churches, abandoned buildings, remains of Confederate breastworks, hunting and fishing camps, natural areas, a "hanging tree," old rice fields, and portraits of local people. The prints are sized 15x19 inches. Dudik's work received the 2015 Archive of Documentary Arts Award for Emerging Documentarians and has been published as a photobook in 2010. Acquired as part of the Archive of Documentary Arts at Duke University.

The Tobacco Collection contains material assembled by library staff related to the manufacturing, sale, and use of tobacco in the United States, particularly in North Carolina and Virginia. There are also items referring to tobacco cultivation and processing. Printed advertising predominates, but the contents also include items that are not paper products. Typical paper-based items include cigarette and cigar advertising trade cards of W. Duke, Sons & Co., Lorillard, Liggett and Myers, John Player and Sons, and various other American and British companies; tobacco advertisements by Krueger and Brown of N.Y.; and souvenir tobacco albums published by Allen & Ginter. Other forms of advertising in the collection include broadsides, pamphlets, books, leaflets, letters, envelopes, cigar and cigarette boxes and labels, cans, a plate, wrappers, labels, and catalogs. Images include birds, animals, battle scenes, and persons, including a series on "African Types."

Advertisements represent products and services from a wide range of categories including alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages, businesses, cosmetics and other health and beauty products, fashion (including clothing, jewelry and watches), food, hotels and other tourist and travel destinations, household products, movies and theater events, tobacco products (primarily cigarettes) and transportation (airlines, automobiles, buses, cruise lines, trains, tires and other automotive accessories). The bulk of materials are in English, but French, Greek, and Spanish-language items are also present. Companies represented include Ford, Packard, Chrysler, Chevrolet, Coca Cola, TWA, Henri Bendel, Goodyear, and DeBeers. Non-advertising related materials include sheet music from the vaudeville, ragtime, and minstrel era; World War I; and depictions of African Americans, Native American, and other ethnicities in advertisements and print media. The J. Walter Thompson Company (JWT), founded in 1864, is one of the largest and oldest enduring advertising agencies in the United States. Goldfarb Consultants, founded in 1966 by Canadian pollster and market researcher Martin Goldfarb, is a leading Canadian marketing consulting group that specializes in focus groups and other qualitative research methods. Martin Goldfarb sold his interest in Goldfarb Consultants to JWT's parent company, WPP, in 1998. The Goldfarb Consultants Ford Research Reports span the years 1974 to 1989 and consist of written research summaries primarily of advertising campaigns for various Ford automobiles, vans, and trucks. In addition there are reports on a range of specialized consumer markets, focused on women, African-American, Hispanic, youth, college-age consumer groups as well as some reports on regional markets.
