Abstract Or Scope
The Duke University Art Association was formed by William K. Boyd in 1930. The Association planned and organized art exhibits, gallery talks, and other art appreciation activities on the Duke campus until the early 1940s. Collection includes minutes, correspondence, photographs, exhibit catalogs, lists of objects, membership lists, and related materials. Major subjects include faculty spouses, art appreciation, the Woman's College Library, the American Federation of Arts, the Carl Shurz Memorial Foundation for the Development of Cultural Relations Between the United States and Germany, the College Art Association, and the Southern States Art League. The bulk of the materials range in date from 1930 to 1938. English.

Alex Harris is a documentary photographer, author, and professor emeritus at the Center for Documentary Studies in Durham, North Carolina. The over 700 black-and-white and color photographs in the collection span his career, and include projects exploring the landscapes and peoples of Alaska, the American South, New Mexico, and Cuba; portraits of older reading volunteers and students in Philadelphia; students on strike at Yale University; counter-culture people at a Rainbow Gathering in Arizona; the artist's son tethered to his game device; elderly people living on their own in North Carolina; the interior of author Reynolds Price's home; and movie production sets in the South. The gelatin silver and inkjet prints range in size from 8x10 inch reference prints to 24x36 inch exhibit prints. Harris's professional papers document his collaborations with other photographers and writers on books and exhibitions, including anthropologist Gertrude Duby Blom, naturalist E.O. Wilson, and South African photographers; they also cover his long career at Duke University, as teacher, author, and co-founder of the Center for Documentary Studies and its publication, DoubleTake. In addition to the paper records, there are many recorded oral histories and interviews. Acquired as part of the Archive of Documentary Arts at Duke University.

Chris Johnson farmworker photographs, 1990s

Collection comprises 124 black-and-white digital photographic prints taken by North Carolina photographer Chris Johnson, portraying North Carolina farmworkers and migrant laborers in work settings as well as in their field camps and homes, many of which are revealed as dilapidated and unsanitary. Several series document labor organization and protests, including a five-year strike protesting working conditions for Mount Olive Pickle company workers. Other subjects in the images include the children and families of the farmworkers; volunteer teachers and organizers, some of whom are from the organization Student Action with Farmworkers; tobacco and Christmas tree growing in North Carolina; and street scenes from the border crossing areas of Brownsville, Texas and Matamoros, Mexico. Acquired as part of the Archive of Documentary Arts at Duke University.

Judy Malloy is a poet and an early creator of online interactive and collaborative fiction. She is a founder of the Arts Conference on the WELL, and wrote Uncle Roger, the first online hyperfiction. Collection includes documentation and materials from Malloy's publications and programs, including Uncle Roger and its name was Penelope, as well as materials from her nonfiction research, including her 2003 book, Women, Technology, and Art. Also includes exhibition files and correspondence files from Malloy's career as an artist, both from creating artists books and from her work in new media and hypertext. Correspondence files include letters, postcards, original artwork and clippings from other artists as well as electronic literature (e-lit) artists and writers.

The J. Walter Thompson Company, Advertising and Marketing Intelligence Database Records date from 1977 to 1983, with some undated material. The collection contains information on the development and early years of the Advertising and Marketing Intelligence (AMI) database, successor to the Issues Monitoring System (1970s) produced by the New York Times (NYT) Information Bank and the White House; a JWT/NYT advertising and marketing news database (1979) drawn from over 60 major business publications; and AD/KIT, or "Advertising Key Information Tracking System." Available by subscription and via telnet, AMI began in 1980 and tracked news items according to an advertising keyword index. The collection details the conception, announcement, and initial years of operation of AMI with financial data, marketing and management information, marketing research, and slide presentation scripts. Frederick Edwards was an Episcopal clergyman and president of the American Society for Psychical Research. Collection contains correspondence, journal (1884-1945, 52 v.), sermons, meditations, and poems, chiefly relating to psychical phenomena and Edwards' views on theology and spiritualism, particularly life after death. Also includes letters, 1933-1935, commenting on Franklin Roosevelt, the New Deal, and the social effects of the Depression. Includes World War I letters and also poetry of Edwards' son, Frederick Trevenen, who died during the war.

Les Brown (1912-2001) was a 1936 graduate of Duke University, where he led the dance band the Duke Blue Devils. Under the name Les Brown and His Band of Renown, the band would achieve professional success in the 1940s and beyond, including a long tenure as Bob Hope's band. The Les Brown Scores Collection chiefly contains manuscripts of 329 jazz big band charts composed and/or arranged for Brown's band, the majority of which are undated, but with some dated between 1944 and 1953. While some charts comprise both a score and complete parts, most are either the score only or incomplete parts only. One additional folder contains a concert program and press clippings related to Brown's performance at Duke University in 1985.

Collection comprises 39 digitally printed color photographs selected from a project by photographer Eliot Dudik, "Road Ends in Water," which documents the expansion of U.S. Route 17 in South Carolina and the landscapes, buildings, inhabitants, and way of life in the areas affected by this highway project. Images include house interiors, churches, abandoned buildings, remains of Confederate breastworks, hunting and fishing camps, natural areas, a "hanging tree," old rice fields, and portraits of local people. The prints are sized 15x19 inches. Dudik's work received the 2015 Archive of Documentary Arts Award for Emerging Documentarians and has been published as a photobook in 2010. Acquired as part of the Archive of Documentary Arts at Duke University.

The Tobacco Collection contains material assembled by library staff related to the manufacturing, sale, and use of tobacco in the United States, particularly in North Carolina and Virginia. There are also items referring to tobacco cultivation and processing. Printed advertising predominates, but the contents also include items that are not paper products. Typical paper-based items include cigarette and cigar advertising trade cards of W. Duke, Sons & Co., Lorillard, Liggett and Myers, John Player and Sons, and various other American and British companies; tobacco advertisements by Krueger and Brown of N.Y.; and souvenir tobacco albums published by Allen & Ginter. Other forms of advertising in the collection include broadsides, pamphlets, books, leaflets, letters, envelopes, cigar and cigarette boxes and labels, cans, a plate, wrappers, labels, and catalogs. Images include birds, animals, battle scenes, and persons, including a series on "African Types."

The J. Walter Thompson Company (JWT), founded in 1864, is one of the largest and oldest enduring advertising agencies in the United States. Goldfarb Consultants, founded in 1966 by Canadian pollster and market researcher Martin Goldfarb, is a leading Canadian marketing consulting group that specializes in focus groups and other qualitative research methods. Martin Goldfarb sold his interest in Goldfarb Consultants to JWT's parent company, WPP, in 1998. The Goldfarb Consultants Ford Research Reports span the years 1974 to 1989 and consist of written research summaries primarily of advertising campaigns for various Ford automobiles, vans, and trucks. In addition there are reports on a range of specialized consumer markets, focused on women, African-American, Hispanic, youth, college-age consumer groups as well as some reports on regional markets.

There are also advertising materials dated 1876-1904, including trading cards, albums, and other advertising collectibles from the W. Duke University's Nicholas School of the Environment traces its beginnings to the founding of the Duke School of Forestry in 1938. In the 1990s two other entities, the Duke Marine Laboratory and the Duke Department of Geology, were combined with Forestry to form the Nicholas School. The Records of Duke University's Nicholas School of the Environment, 1916-ongoing, contain materials created from the school's inception as the Duke School of Forestry (1938) through all its subsequent names: the School of Forestry and Environmental Studies, the School of the Environment, and the Nicholas School of the Environment and Earth Sciences. The collection also includes material about the history of Duke Forest and its use as a teaching and research facility. The earliest materials comprise the papers of Clarence F. Korstian, first director of the Forest and first dean of the School, including his correspondence, early reports about the Forest and the School, and his involvement in the Ecological Society of America, the North Carolina Forestry Association, and the International Union of Forest Research Organizations. The bulk of the collection consists of the School's general administrative records, including annual reports, admissions records, enrollment statistics, information on degrees granted, faculty history and meetings, and surveys and meetings of the School's alumni. Visual materials include posters, color and black-and-white photographs, negatives, slides, and digital photographs that document the School of Forestry and the Duke Marine Laboratory.

Pioneering African American surgeon who was chief of surgery at Lincoln Hospital, clinical professor of surgery at Duke University, founder of Lincoln Community Health Center, director of student health at North Carolina Central University, and vice president and medical director for North Carolina Mutual Life Insurance Company, all in Durham, N.C. Spanning the period of 1917 to 2004, the Charles DeWitt Watts Papers contain files related to Watts's education, family, community activities, centered in Durham, N.C., and his career as a surgeon, administrator, and trustee on several boards. There is material on the formation in 1901 of Lincoln Hospital, a medical care facility for African Americans in Durham, N.C.. and other items on the early 20th century history of Durham, but the bulk of the papers relate to the later half of the 20th century. Formats primarily consist of correspondence, reports, notes, speeches, photographs, and print materials. It is organized into the following series: Community Relations, Personal Files, Photographic Materials, and Professional Files. Material in the Medical Records Series have been separated and are currently closed to use. Acquired as part of the John Hope Franklin Research Center for African and African American History and Culture.

William Carter Gaventa (1921-2002) and Alice Price Gaventa (1921-2014) were medical missionaries who served in Eku and Ogbomosho, Nigeria, between 1949 and 1984. The William C. and Alice Price Gaventa papers collection comprises materials related to their missionary work. The collection also includes materials documenting the life of the Gaventa family, from 1921 to 2022. The collection contains photographs and slides, correspondence, devotional materials, genealogical materials, academic records, writings, postcards, clippings, passports, religious cards, and certificates, among other materials.

Contains the personal and professional records of Paul Magnus Gross, a Duke University administrator, researcher, educator, and scholar. Gross was an Assistant Professor of Chemistry (1919-1920), William H. Pegram Professor of Chemistry (1920-1965), Chair of the Chemistry Department (1921-1948), Dean of the Graduate School (1947-1952), Dean of the University (1952-1958), and Vice-President in the Educational Division (1949-1960). The Paul M. Gross Chemistry Laboratory was named in his honor. Gross was also an independent consultant with the United States Army and various commercial companies. J. Claude Evans was a United Methodist minister who served in South Carolina, Texas, and North Carolina along with his wife, Maxilla. He edited the South Carolina Methodist Advocate from 1952 to 1957, and was chaplain at Southern Methodist University in Dallas from 1957 until his retirement from the ministry in 1982. The majority of the family's papers relate to the pastoral and counseling career of J. Claude Evans, and include drafts and copies of his sermons, articles, columns, and other writings from the 1940s through the early 2000s on wide-ranging topics such as Christianity, spirituality, abortion, race, sexuality, sexism, nature, equality, aging, and violence. The papers also include some personal materials, correspondence, genealogy, notes and printed materials from his many professional activities, and Evans' subject files. There is a small amount of material created and collected by Maxilla, J. Claude's wife, largely relating to her bird watching and breeding of songbirds in Texas and North Carolina.

The Department of Aesthetics, Art, and Music was established at Duke University in 1942. In 1960, the Department of Music was recognized as an independent department, and Dr. Allen H. Bone was appointed the first Chair. The department moved into the Mary Duke Biddle Music Building when it was completed in the 1970's. The bulk of the Dept. of Music records consist of publicity documents including programs, press releases, and calendars, for various Dept. of Music events. There are also documents regarding the renovation of the facilities, clippings, posters and general records for the department.

The records of the documentary project Indivisible: Stories of American Community span the dates 1988-2002. Through documentary photographs and oral histories, project records, videos, and other materials, the collection documents the social conditions in twelve American communities as well as the history of the project, which explored civil activism, struggle, and change in the following locations: the North Pacific Coast of Alaska; Ithaca, N.Y.; San Francisco, California; Navajo Nation, Arizona and New Mexico; Eau Claire, South Carolina; Delray Beach, Florida; Western North Carolina; Stony Brook, N.Y.; San Juan, Texas; Chicago, Illinois; Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; and the Yaak Valley, Montana. The photographers are Dawoud Bey, Bill Burke, Debbie Fleming Caffery, Lucy Capehart, Lynn Davis, Terry Evans, Lauren Greenfield, Joan Liftin, Reagan Louie, Danny Lyon, Sylvia Plachy, and Eli Reed. Ray K. Metzker (1931-2014) was an American photographer based in Philadelphia. The twenty black-and-white photographs in the collection were taken by Metzker from 1957 to 1982. The subjects are chiefly city streets, beaches, and landscapes; they all feature the strong, sometimes abstract, light and dark compositions that Metzker was known for. Locations are unidentified, but may include the New Jersey Shore; Philadelphia; Chicago; and Germany and other locations in Europe. The gelatin silver prints come in two sizes: 8x10 (17) and 11x14 (3) inches. All of the prints are marked on the versos with the photographer's archive stamp, and include various legacy identifiers, edition numbers, and printing dates. Acquired as part of the Archive of Documentary Arts at Duke University.
