Italian soldier's Ethiopian photograph album, 1935-1937

Collection comprises a photograph album maintained by an Italian soldier stationed in Ethiopia during the Second Italo-Ethiopian War and the subsequent Italian occupation of the region. The soldier is unidentified, but his name may be the one that is embossed on the lower right-hand corner of the album's leather cover. On the first page of the album is a postcard announcing the Italian troop's victorious entry into Addis Ababa. Comprises 133 black-and-white photographs, ranging in size from 2"x1" to 4.75"x6", of the A.O.I. (Africa Orientale Italiana). The photographs are divided into groups by city, and many have captions written in Italian. Cities and other locations mentioned include Axum, Scire, Gondar, Cheren, Asmara, Lake Tana, Adua, and Addis Ababa, among others. In addition to images of military maneuvers, there are photographs of social customs and conditions (markets, native buildings, hairdos, priests, pilgrims, ceremonies, families, etc.), wildlife, and landscapes.

The papers of Paul Ramsey span the years 1934 to 1984. Included are correspondence, memoranda, book reviews, typescripts, reprints, drafts of books and articles, clippings, lecture notes and outlines, course outlines, examinations and handouts, writings of Ramsey and others, news releases, theses and dissertations, and cassette tapes. The principal focus of the collection reflects the direction of the teaching and writing career of Ramsey, principally while a professor in the Department of Religion at Princeton University. These primarily professional papers relate to his major fields of interest: theology, philosophy, and the humanities. In particular, Ramsey's chief specialty as a teacher and scholar has been Christian ethics, beginning with the publication of his classic, Basic Christian Ethics in 1950. There followed writings in ethical methodology, "situation ethics," marriage, and sexual ethics. In the 1960s he expanded the scope of his research and writing to include the ethics of warfare and nuclear deterrence, and in the 1970s turned to medical ethics topics, such as fetal research, abortion, and in vitro fertilization.

Carroll Carroll was the Editorial Supervisor of JWT radio programs, working in both the New York and Hollywood offices. The Carroll Carroll Papers cover the years 1934-1979, with the bulk of materials covering the periods 1934-1956 and 1967-1968, when he worked as Editorial Supervisor of JWT radio programs. The collection consists of correspondence between Carroll and: other JWT employees; JWT clients; the Office of War Information; radio personalities; and family members. Independent Aid, Inc. was the first charitable foundation established by Doris Duke, daughter of businessman and philanthropist James Buchanan (J.B.) Duke. It was incorporated in Delaware in October, 1934. Although Miss Duke had limited direct involvement with Independent Aid, its disbursements reflected her persistent interests in the welfare of women and children, education, social work and mental health, and early family planning efforts. The foundation’s daily operations were administered largely by Marian Paschal, who served as Secretary until her death in 1946, and by her successor, Georgea T. Furst. Independent Aid, Inc. became the Doris Duke Foundation in 1951. The collection spans the years 1934 to 1954, beginning with the establishment of Independent Aid, Inc. and including administrative entries through the first years of the Doris Duke Foundation. Journals, cashbooks, ledgers, and minute books comprise the majority of the collection; these detail contributions to the foundation as well as disbursements. The remaining materials include correspondence, the foundation’s original by-laws, federal tax forms, financial records and lists of stock holdings, and memoranda documenting daily operations.

Anna Julia Cooper papers, 1934-1951

Anna Julia Cooper was an American author, educator, sociologist, speaker, Black Liberation activist, and one of the most prominent African-American scholars in United States history. Collection comprises 9 items from and to Anna Julia Cooper regarding the disposition and placement of the Charlotte Forten Grimke diaries and her desire to bring all five of Grimke's diaries into a single repository. Cooper was likely Grimke's literary executor and was trying to obtain three of five diaries from the possession of Prof. Ray A. Billington, professor of history at Smith College and Northwestern University. Billington tried to convince Copper to place all five diaries in one place (either the Library of Congress or Howard University). Billington also corresponded with Dorothy Porter, head of the negro collection at Howard University, and Rayford Logan, professor of history at Howard University, to inform them of his attempts to persuade Cooper to place the diaries there. Cooper eventually decided Howard University was the place where the diaries should be preserved. In addition, there are three letters regarding Cooper's endorsement of the appointment of Charles Wesley to the Washington, D.C., School Board in 1936. Also, there is a program for a religious service held for Frelinghuysen University in 1934.

Noyes-Balch family papers, 1854-1957 and undated

The Noyes and Balch families resided primarily in Jamaica Plain, Massachusetts. Collection comprises correspondence, including 136 letters (603 pages); 3 diaries; a photograph album and loose photographs, as well as a wooden box in which the family stored letters from Catharine Porter Noyes. The collection centers around Catharine, who detailed her experiences while teaching newly freed slaves at plantations on the Sea Islands of South Carolina, from 1863-1864 and 1869-1870. There are also family letters written to Catharine, 1860-1892, especially from her sister, Ellen (Nellie); Ellen's husband, F. V. "Frank" Balch; and her cousin, Mary, who taught with Ellen in South Carolina, among others family members. Another set of letters were written by Ellen to Frank while he served as secretary to U. S. Senator and abolitionist Charles Sumner (R-Ma) in 1864 in Washington, D.C.; and by artist Emily E. Balch to Richard Noyes Stone. The collection also contains a diary maintained by a 12-year-old girl, probably Ravella Balch, and there are two diaries maintained by Emily E. Balch in 1929. There is a photograph album containing 32 black-and-white photographs of Noyes and Balch family members, as well as family friends. There are also loose black-and-white photographs, dated 1877-1957. Acquired as part of the Sallie Bingham Center for Women's History and Culture, and as part of the John Hope Franklin Research Center for African and African American History and Culture.

Catharine's letter topics included local opinions about freed blacks and the fact that some white visitors looked down on her for her teaching the freedmen. Also, she noted that one local black male who was apprehended for wrongdoing was widely believed to be innocent. There was often illness and death on the plantation, and she described her sense of discomfort while attending funerals for blacks, because she was unfamiliar with their funeral customs.

Includes two booklets with courtesy cards that enabled the holder to order free make-up samples appropriate for their complextion and features. A "Miss Thennis" likely used the courtesy cards, for there is a letter addressed to her regarding the products and their application, a completed make-up color harmony chart that may have accompanied the letter, as well as sample envelopes for rouge (unopened, containing a powder puff) and face powder. Also contains a product order form.

Many of the latter express an anti-American position. Other posters in the collection advertise art and design exhibits, and announce celebrations and civic events. The Diamond Information Center Vertical File spans the years from the 1930s to the 1980s and is chiefly an informational file of printed materials. The file was originally created when the N.W. Ayers advertising agency handled the De Beers account. The vertical file was transferred to JWT along with the account. JWT currently handles the advertising for De Beers diamonds. The chief component consists of roughly 2000 lantern slides used by college professor Azel Hull Fish in lectures about the history of California, the Panama-Pacific Exposition, Plymouth Colony, the settling of the American West, social and economic development of the U.S., works of art, and other historical and philosophical subjects. The slides are arranged by subject group. Additional materials consist of photographs, some loose, but most mounted in photograph albums. Azel Hull Fish lantern slide lecture sets and photographs, 1890s-1940s 9 Linear Feet (6 boxes)

The chief component consists of roughly 2000 lantern slides used by college professor Azel Hull Fish in lectures about the history of California, the Panama-Pacific Exposition, Plymouth Colony, the settling of the American West, social and economic development of the U.S., works of art, and other historical and philosophical subjects. The slides are arranged by subject group. Additional materials consist of photographs, some loose, but most mounted in photograph albums. Some of these were souvenir albums with views of California and other Western states by commercial photographers. Also included are some pamphlets, chiefly lecture texts, and a slide projector.

Robbins with each of his editors for each region of the United States (the Regional Chairmen), copies of the directives sent to participating libraries, copies of the master list of names to be checked, minutes of editorial board meetings, descriptions of the project, a proposal for a computerized updating of the census of library holdings of American literary manuscripts, negotiations with the publisher, grant requests, and reports. The correspondence between Midwest Regional Chairman, George Hendrick, and his Regional Associates is included in order to demonstrate how the project operated. The questionnaires returned by the libraries in that region are included. There are also ten printouts, included as a random sampling of printouts required. Acquired as part of the Jay B. Hubbell Center for American Literary Historiography.

Collection spans Joseph Mathews' career as a professor of European history at the University of Chattanooga, University of Mississippi, and Emory University. He served as historian in the armed forces during World War II; at the Naval Bureau of Ordnance and Ordnance Activities he directed and authored numerous studies and publications. His vitae is included in the collection. The papers primarily consist of Mathew's personal and professional correspondence. The personal letters include letters from his wife, Marcia M. Mathews, and reflect his professional interests and activities; the professional letters deal with personnel, budgets, curricula, and his service for the Southern Historical Association, among other topics. Collection includes letters from Helen Keller to Agatha and Harry Hunter, dated 1930 and undated, thanking them for their food gifts at Christmas. There is another letter from Keller to Frank L. Boyden, dated 1949, regarding the possibility of a bequest by him to the American Foundation for the Blind. Includes his letter in response negating that possibility, but expressing his admiration for her. There is also an unrelated letter in the collection, written by Harry Hunter to Mabel McCormick (Mrs. Ferris? McCormick) in 1951, discussing their respective interests, food, friends, business, and their love for each other. Includes envelopes. Also contains a photograph of Anne Sullivan and Helen Keller, and a postcard with her printed portrait and a salutation in Braille.

One item is a mounted silver gelatin photograph, dated 1913 and signed by photographer W.H. Langley of Maine, Dimensions are 10x14 cm. Photograph depicts Helen Keller and Anne Sullivan in hats and coats, standing near train tracks. The second item is a postcard with a printed photograph of Helen Keller, and text "Sincerely yours, Helen Keller," and a message in Braille. The verso has a printed Braille alphabet and a translation of the message, which reads: "I am a co-worker with Helen Keller." This item is undated but appears to be from the 1920s.

Pioneer Tailoring Company was a direct-to-consumer manufacturer of tailor-made menswear, based in Chicago and active approximately from the 1900s-1960s. Collection consists of a sales representative's wooden case that held order forms; measurement and tailoring instructions; stationery; measuring devices; sales instruction and promotional literature; and fabric samples. Sales representatives would meet clients, take measurements and note fabric choices, collect deposits and forward the information to a factory in Chicago that would make the suit or overcoat to the client's measurements and specifications, then ship the finished products back to the customer. Acquired as part of the John W. Hartman Center for Sales, Advertising & Marketing History.

Bert Cole Advertising System collection, 1897-1926

Bert Cole (1869-1958) was a circus performer, announcer, and advertising agent who developed a marketing scheme called the Bert Cole System in which circus elephants were draped with business advertisements during circus parades and local events. Collection includes black-and-white photographs and postcards, receipts and licenses, and correspondence that document Bert Cole's advertising business while working with circuses including the Charles Sparks Circus and the Hagenbeck-Wallace Circus. The banners promoted a variety of businesses, including automobiles and automobile dealers; automotive tires; banks; flour and other food products; local retail and clothing stores; and tobacco products. Many of the photographs are annotated with the date and place the photograph was taken. Circus performers and clowns identified in the photographs include Bert Noyes, Louis Plamondon (1872-1934), Lon Moore (1865-1920), and Mickey McDonald, as well as images of Bert's father, circus owner George S. Cole, with his elephant-based advertising service he ran prior to Bert assuming the practice under his own name. Also represented in the photographs is the elephant Mary, part of the Sparks rail show, notable for having been executed in 1916 after killing her handler. Photographs depict locations throughout the South and upper Midwest, including Texas, Florida, Mississippi, Indiana, Wyoming, and Little Big Horn, Montana. Acquired as part of the John W. Hartman Center for Sales, Advertising & Marketing History.
