Boyd Ellsworth Payton papers, 1929-1977 and undated

Abstract Or Scope

Labor leader from Willingboro (Burlington Co.), N.J. Papers concerning the career of Boyd Ellsworth Payton, International Vice President of the Textile Workers Union of America. The papers concern three major aspects of Payton's career: the Harriet-Henderson Cotton Mills strike (1958-1961); his incarceration and writing of the book, Scapegoat; and finally his experiences after being released from prison. Included are genealogical materials, correspondence, legal papers, addresses and writings, miscellaneous items, radio scripts, pictures, and a draft of Scapegoat, entitled Prejudice + Politics = Prison. Other papers include items on the poll tax in the South, as well as pamphlets relating to labor unions and the South, the poll tax, and strikes. Clippings deal principally with the American Federation of Labor (AFL), AFL publicity, South Carolina Federation of Labor Convention, United Textile Workers of America convention, communists, and the Bessemer City strike. A 1929 scrapbook houses clippings pertaining to the southern textile strike in that year, and a 1946 scrapbook contains information on the Danville (Va.) Citizens' Committee, a group organized to fight inflation and high prices in Danville. Formerly part of the Labor Archives Collection. Original box numbers have been retained.

Treasurer's Office Records span the years from 1928-1952, although the bulk of the material dates from 1928 to the 1940s. The collection documents the financial operations of JWT offices around the world and to a lesser extent in the United States. The materials consist of correspondence, financial records, and legal documents relating to the activities of JWT's Treasurer's Office. Correspondents include Earle Clark (Treasurer, 1921-39), Donald C. Foote, (Assistant Treasurer in charge of accounting and budgeting in JWT's international operations, 1937-52), Luther O. Lemon (Assistant Treasurer and Comptroller, 1937-46; Treasurer, 1946-57), and Sam Meek (Vice President in charge of International Operations 1930-64); senior staff members in domestic and international offices; JWT's legal counsel; and representatives from numerous financial institutions. Multinational clients represented in the International Offices Series are the Eastman Kodak Company, the Kellogg Company, the Gillette Company, RCA, and Reader's Digest. International offices well-documented include those in Antwerp, Berlin, Bombay, Bucharest, London, and Mexico City. Records for many of JWT's offices are not included in the Treasurer's Office Records, which indicates that the files in their present form may be incomplete.

The Duke Memorial was formed in 1929 to honor Washington, Benjamin N., and James B. Duke. The group worked on several projects, including building the Memorial Chapel in Duke Chapel, financing the purchase of Duke Homestead, and building a statue of James B. Duke. The collection consists mainly of financial documents, as well as general correspondence, minutes, and proposals and suggestions. Major topics include the construction of Memorial Chapel and the sarcophagi within, the purchase of Duke Homestead, and the financing of the James B. Duke Statue. The Communist League of America (CLA) was founded in 1929 by James P. Cannon, Max Schachtman, and Martin Abern following their expulsion in 1928 from the Workers (Communist) Party. D.W. (Dallas Walton) Newsom was an educational administrator, county manager, scholar, and poet. Newsom entered Trinity College in the fall of 1895 beginning a twenty-seven year association with the institution. Kilgo and Tempe Battle Newsom; clippings of Kilgo's speeches, articles, visitations, and obituary from various local and regional newspapers; and some biographical writings regarding Kilgo. The American Dance Festival is a non-profit organization committed to serving the needs of dance, dancers, choreographers, and professionals in dance-related fields. John F. Hogan was a sales representative and manager for several transportation advertising companies, from the 1940s to the 1970s, responsible for placing advertisements in and on buses, subways, trains, and transit stations in the northeastern United States, particularly New York and Connecticut. The John F. Hogan Papers span the years 1928-1992, with the bulk of the material dating from 1949 to 1972, and document Hogan's career as an executive in transportation advertising. The collection consists of photographs, contracts, poster samples, print publications and other printed material, and scrapbooks of transit advertising images, clippings, correspondence and memorabilia. Particularly represented in the collection is Hogan's work for the John H. Breck, Inc. hair-care company.

Ellwood S. Harrar served as a Professor of Wood Technology at Duke University from 1936 to 1974, and as Dean of the Duke University School of Forestry from 1957 to 1967. American Catalin Corporation salesman's sample book, 1928-1930

Abstract Or Scope

The American Catalin Corporation was founded in New York, N.Y., in 1927; it developed the light-colored, transparent, filler-free Bakelite resin in a wide range of colors. Bakelite is the first synthetic plastic, developed by Dr. Leo Baekeland between 1907 and 1909. American Catalin Corporation used its form of the resin for costume jewelry, fashion accessories, radios, and other products. By 1942, the company suspended its manufacture of jewelry and cast items to concentrate on wartime production. After the war, petroleum-based plastics gained favor. Collection comprises a salesman's sample book in a black leather album used to provide a visual guide for the company's products. The album contains primarily 34 black-and-white 8x10 photographs (8 photographs are laid in, all but two are linen backed, those not laid-in are stamped on the back with "Johnston & Tunick Commercial Photographers"), as well as 17 typeset pages containing inter-office memos, sales tips, information regarding the company's competition, and customer testimonials. Several of the memos are written to the attention of D. J. Kelly, who was the salesman for whom the sample book was prepared. There is also a two-page key to the main group of 19 photographs, identifying the Bakelite products in each photograph, as well as the item's final producer. Seven of the laid-in photographs show the corporation's factory, including three of factory workers on the job. The papers span Turner's career as a scholar of American literature, from his undergraduate education at West Texas State University in 1927 to his death in 1980, when he was an instructor at Southwest Texas State University. Comprised primarily of personal and professional correspondence with scholars and publishers of American literature, including Gay Wilson Allen, John Q. Anderson, Louis Budd, Robert Cantwell, James B. Colvert, Eddie Gay Cone, Benjamin Franklin Fisher, Albert Mordell, Norman Holmes Pearson, William Stafford, and Edmund Wilson. There are also letters, printed matter, reports, and minutes that Turner collected as a member or officer of organizations, including the American Literature Section of the Modern Language Association, Committee for American Studies, and the Associated Research Council. The Ever-Ready Club was a Ku Klux Klan Women's group based in Catskill, New York. Minute book and cashbook documenting the origin and activities of this local chapter of Klanswomen. Entries from May through November, 1927, reflect routine business matters such as the induction of new members, the adoption of the chapter name and by-laws, donations to charities, and service work. Members are referred to by name. Secret ceremonies are mentioned but not described. Includes a printed clipping of the "Kreed" of the group that called itself Women of the Ku Klux Klan.

Elizabeth Arden was a pioneering cosmetics entrepreneur. In this letter, she writes to advise a potential customer on matters relating to health and beauty. Arden advises her to get plenty of rest, eat a balanced diet, and to use products from Arden's Venetian line in order to soothe her chapped hands. Arden writes, "I know that where one is a busy housewife and has many duties in a country home, it is hard to get rest and relaxation. Perhaps you are of the naturally alert, quick, nervous type and use up a lot of energy everyday."

Connell was an executive with JWT during a twenty year career in which he held positions of General Counsel, Vice President and Director of JWT, and Executive Vice President and Director of JWT's parent company, the JWT Group Inc. The Hugh P. Connell Papers cover the years 1926-1986, with the bulk of materials dating from 1966-1986, roughly the period during which Connell served in an executive capacity for the J. Walter Thompson Company (JWT) and the JWT Group Inc. Resident of Stockton and San Francisco, California. Collection consists of manuscript and typewritten letters, written primarily to Sylvia Norton from her family, dealing with their financial struggles during the Great Depression. Also contains manuscripts of poetry and short stories written by either Sylvia or Lillian Norton under the name (Frances) Elliott Norton. Correspondence with author and critic Laurence D'Orsay discusses Elliott Norton's writing abilities. There are also a few news clippings, legal documents, and some biographical materials. Acquired as part of the Sallie Bingham Center for Women's History and Culture.

F. Norman Phelps scrapbook, 1926-1935 and undated

F. Norman Phelps was a Chevrolet sales executive in various cities, including Milwaukee, Wisc.; Detroit, Mich., Davenport, Ia.; Kansas City, Mo.; and Los Angeles, Calif. Full name: Fredrick Norman Phelps; b. 20 March 1895 in Bucyrus (Crawford County), Ohio; d. 23 January 1974 in Piedmont, Calif. Collection comprises a scrapbook (about 54 pgs) documenting Phelps' career as a Chevrolet sales executive. Includes primarily newspaper clippings and black-and-white photographs, although there are also such items as letters, telegrams, news releases, programs (including those for national auto exhibits, sales conventions, and other events), menus, song lyric sheets, a medallion name tag, and other ephemera, all housed in a leather "Chevrolet Sales Speeder" three-ring binder. The newspaper clippings and letters document Phelps' various transfers and promotions; other items cover topics such as company-sponsored hunting events, meals, outings, vintage cars, and skits. There is only one unrelated item: a newspaper clipping from 1926 tells of Phelps' escape from a house fire.

J. Walter Thompson Company. Lucile Turnbach Platt papers, 1926-1930

Abstract Or Scope

The papers of Lucile Turnbach Platt, former employee of the J. Walter Thompson Company's Personality Department, span the years 1926 to 1930; some Items are undated. The materials primarily document the creation of a testimonial advertising campaign for Simmons beds and boxsprings, and Beautyrest mattresses. The papers illustrate the selection of spokespersons, photographing of them and their home interiors, travel arrangements, delivery and removal of beds, and payment for their services. The materials chiefly consist of office memoranda and other correspondence among Platt, other JWT staff and product spokespersons. The collection also includes photographs and negatives, a few samples of advertisements, lists of women approached to participate, unsigned copies of contracts, and drafts of testimonials. Most of the files relate to soliciting very prominent American and foreign women to endorse Simmons products, including Eleanor Roosevelt, Mrs. Charles Crocker, Mrs. John Sargent Pillsbury, Mrs. Perry Tiffany, Mrs. Robert T. Vanderbilt, and Mrs. John W. Wanamaker III, among many others. Endorsers were paid between $1,000 and $5,000 for permission to use their names, photographs, and testimonials. Photographs of bedrooms were shot on location in the women's homes. The materials are arranged with miscellaneous Simmon's account files first, alphabetically by title, then files are arranged alphabetically by the spokesperson's name.

Margaret Sanger letter to Vachel Lindsay, 1925 February 13

Abstract Or Scope

The Margaret Sanger letter to Vachel Linsday regards a request from the contraception activist to the poet asking him to write a statement of support to be read at an upcoming birth control conference. Linsday responds by writing a note at the bottom of Sanger's letter replying that he wishes to father "twelve sons seven feet high" with the famously long-haired Seven Sutherland Sisters. The accompanying pamphlet contains the program for the upcoming conference.

Jung, Oskar Robert Pfister, Alphonse Maeder, Paul Federn, Emil Oberholzer and Eugen Bleuler. "My analysis with Freud" is a transcript (44 pp.) of 15 sittings with Sigmund Freud. Stirling-Gilchrist claims to be a student of W.H.R. Rivers.

Doris Duke papers on the Duke Endowment, 1925-2001, bulk 1956-1993

Doris Duke's father, James Buchanan (J.B.) Duke, established the Duke Endowment as a perpetual charitable trust in 1924. Mr. Duke designed the fund to be both flexible and enduring, but limited its efforts to the Carolinas and to four program areas: child care, health care, higher education, and rural churches. Miss Duke became a trustee of the Endowment in 1933. The collection spans the years 1925 to 2001, with the bulk dating from 1956 through 1993. Collection materials primarily document the administrative business of the Endowment and include correspondence, news stories, meeting materials, financial statements, legal records, reports, and proposals. Many of the materials relate specifically to the Endowment's interests in private university education and health care.

The Research Council, also called the University Council on Research, was established at Duke University in 1934, to support faculty research by providing professional travel funding, publication subvention, and research grants. Until 1978, it prepared the annual bibliography of faculty publications (no longer published). The Research Council was later renamed the Arts & Sciences Committee on Faculty Research. The Research Council Records include reports, minutes, memoranda, correspondence, summaries, and faculty publications lists (1934-1976), pertaining to research projects and support for Duke University faculty. The Angier B. Duke Memorial was established in 1925 by Benjamin N. Duke to honor his son Angier Buchanan Duke (1884-1923; Trinity, 1905). The program was reworked in 1946-1947 when the Memorial Scholarship became the University's premier undergraduate award. This collection contains annual reports of various committees, correspondence and memoranda, studies, proposals, and financial records. A majority pertains to loans, awards, and scholarships funded by the Angier B. Duke Memorial.

Order of the White Duchy records, 1925-1968.

Abstract Or Scope

The Order of the White Duchy was a secret women's honorary at Duke University. The group was formed in May 1925 by the Order of the Red Friars, a secret men's honorary, to recognize members of the Woman's College of Duke University. The members of the Order of the White Duchy voluntarily disbanded the organization in 1968. Records include constitution, initiation ritual, minutes, correspondence, photographs, membership and alumnae lists, financial records, clippings, issues of the Lucky Number alumnae newsletter, and two scrapbooks. Major subjects within the collection are collaboration between student leaders and college administration and student opinions concerning sororities, social standards, and the honor code. Prominent members include Mary Duke Biddle Trent Semans, Margaret Taylor Smith, Elizabeth Hanford Dole, Dorothy Newsom Rankin, and Dorothy Battle Rankin. English.

George "Jelly" Leftwich joined Duke University in 1926 as conductor of the Duke University Club Orchestra. He is best remembered for having written the words and music to Duke's fight song, "The Blue and White." The scrapbook contains newspaper clippings, photos, programs, invitations, tickets, booklets, advertisements, posters, and memorabilia related to the Duke University music department, as well as George "Jelly" Leftwich's personal photos and documents. Manufacturer sales contest photograph albums, 1922-1925

Abstract Or Scope

Collection comprises two photograph albums documenting manufacturer's sales promotion contests administered by various newspapers in the U.S. northeast, primarily in Pennsylvania. The contests required participants to amass "votes" by collecting labels or wrappers from designated products to be turned in to the newspaper offices. Photographs depict newspaper advertisements announcing the contests, collections of wrapper submissions, correspondence relating to the contest and other activities. Newspapers documented include the Advocate, Cleveland News, Philadelphia Record, Pittsburgh Post-Sun, and Sunday News Leader. D.J. Wattis, at one time of the Pittsburgh Post-Sun Advertising Department is featured several times in conjunction with the contests. Designated consumer products represent regional and national brands and include Barbasol, Foulds, Keebler, Lautz Brothers (Snow Boy), Post and Postum cereals, Salada Tea and Woolson Spice Company (Golden Sun Coffee). Acquired as part of the John W. Hartman Center for Sales, Advertising & Marketing History.

Ellen Huckabee held a variety of administrative leadership positions during her more than 20 years at the Woman's College, including Assistant Dean, Associate Dean, and Dean of Undergraduate Instruction. This collection documents Huckabee's career and her strong interest in fostering education in women through travel. Her interest in understanding generational differences and their significance in effectively educating students is highlighted here. Her post-retirement civic participation is captured in her formal statement at a public meeting in 1979 against the proposed East-West Freeway in Durham. Collection contains Ruth K. Nuermberger's correspondence, genealogical materials, travel diaries written during trips to Europe, various writings, printed materials and reprints of published articles, and other miscellanous papers, as well as notes for Nuermberger's book, Free Produce Movement, A Quaker Protest Against Slavery, Duke University Press, 1942. Some materials relate to Charles Osborn, a defrocked Quaker minister and early U.S. abolitionist. There are also many folders of notes for another publication, The Clays of Alabama, A Planter-Lawyer-Politician Family, University of Kentucky Press, 1958, which outlined the history of the Clay family and of Clement Comer Clay, governor of Alabama from 1835 to 1837.
