Joseph Jastrow papers, 1875-1961 and undated

Collection contains correspondence; lectures, speeches, prose, and poetry; published articles; book reviews; photographs and negatives; a scrapbook; and newspaper clippings. Subjects include the Jastrow family of Philadelphia and the Szold family of Baltimore, early psychology and psychophysics, the University of Wisconsin at Madison, Jewish society and Judaism in Baltimore and Philadelphia, and the Zionist movement. Correspondents include his father, Talmudic scholar Marcus Jastrow, and sister-in-law and U.S. Zionist movement leader, Henrietta Szold. Papers also include information on Joseph Jastrow's adopted son, Benjamin (Benno) Jastrow; a typed memoir, circa 1920, by Benno's biological father contains a moving account of the tragic outcome of the Spanish influenza epidemic (1918-1919), which led to the adoption of the infant Benno by the Jastrow family. Glass plates in the collection contain charts of symbols which may be results of experiments in involuntary hand movements, traced by his invention, the "automograph."

Jennings include business documents of Samuel Jennings, David Fouch, and Samuel Jennings Jr., farmers and millers of wheat in Washington County, Maryland; land deeds and surveys; debts; tax listings; correspondence concerning family matters and social life in Maryland, Iowa, Illinois, and South Dakota; papers related to the English estate of William Jenners; Sunday School lessons of the 1870s; and genealogies of the Fouch and Jennings (or Jenners) families. Volumes include an account book, 1852-1853, of David Fouch (?) for milling flour, and a route book, 1882-1883, of Fred O'Brian.

In the second letter in the collection, dated 9 June 1886, Jeffries forwards Sanborn's letter to D. O. Kellogg, editor of the American edition of the Encylopaedia Britannica.

Jewish Heritage Foundation of North Carolina collection of Jewish historical materials, 1888-1988, 2014

The Jewish Heritage Foundation of North Carolina (JHFNC) is an independent organization dedicated to preserving and presenting the history of the Jewish people of North Carolina, and transferred its archives, including these materials, to the Rubenstein Library in 2014. Since 2019, the organization has been known as Jewish Heritage North Carolina (JHNC). This collection consists of historical material created or collected by Jewish individuals, families, and social and religious organizations of North Carolina, and donated to the JHFNC. Types of material include scrapbooks, certificates, pamphlets, catalogs, correspondence, photographs, World War II-era Nazi weapons and military paraphernalia collected by Jewish American soldiers, and other artifacts and manuscript materials.

Sarah Orne Jewett was a well-known 19th century author whose fiction is set in her native rural Maine. In the first letter, Jewett declines to send Mr. Sawyer anything to print in the first issue of his magazine, as she has been ill and busy, and doesn't want to write something in a hurry, although she wishes him well with his new publication. The second is a condolence letter to Lucy Coffin of Newbury, Massachusetts on the loss of her father. The Coffins were a prominent Massachusetts family.

Collection comprises 19 images of various locations in the northern provinces, including 18 mounted albumen photographs probably taken by Jewett, along with one published view of Sivas attributed to Franklin Eng Co, Boston. All but one of the images is captioned, and several photographs an additional information written on the back of the mount.

The Jewish Heritage Foundation of North Carolina records span the years 1750 to 2014 and document the origins and daily operations of the organization, which preserves and presents the history of the Jewish people of North Carolina through public programming, exhibits, and other projects. The collection includes documents and digital material related to the planning, funding, and carrying out of various exhibits, events and projects, especially the multimedia program "Down Home: Jewish Life in North Carolina." Also present are primary and secondary research materials collected by JHFNC historian Leonard Rogoff related to the history and culture of Jews in North Carolina and southern Jewish identity. Types of materials in the collection include financial statements, meeting minutes, correspondence, reports, typescripts, newsletters, marketing materials, photographs, research notes, and audiovisual material. Kenneth M. Johnson Sermons, 1951-2010

Collection consists of typescripts of Rev. Kenneth Johnson's sermons, many containing handwritten notes and accompanying material on which the sermon topic was based. Sermons are numbered and are arranged by date, according to the church Johnson was serving at the time. The 2002 accession also contains card indices of sermons (ca. 3600 items), which arranges sermons by title, topic, and scriptures and texts. Johnson's sermons were delivered at United Methodist churches across North Carolina, including McKendree Chapel, New Mt. Vernon-Shady Grove, West Bend, Oak Summit, Asbury Memorial, Green Street, Saint Andrew's (Charlotte), Central (Mooresville), Leaksville (Eden), First (Newton), Burkhead (Winston-Salem), Aldersgate Methodist (Shelby), and Grace Methodist (Greensboro). Johnson also preached several sermons in Indonesia (1995, 1998).

Chris Johnson farmworker photographs, 1990s

Collection comprises 124 black-and-white digital photographic prints taken by North Carolina photographer Chris Johnson, portraying North Carolina farmworkers and migrant laborers in work settings as well as in their field camps and homes, many of which are revealed as dilapidated and unsanitary. Several series document labor organization and protests, including a five-year strike protesting working conditions for Mount Olive Pickle company workers. Other subjects in the images include the children and families of the farmworkers; volunteer teachers and organizers, some of whom are from the organization Student Action with Farmworkers; tobacco and Christmas tree growing in North Carolina; and street scenes from the border crossing areas of Brownsville, Texas and Matamoros, Mexico. Acquired as part of the Archive of Documentary Arts at Duke University.
