The collection contains information on the development and early years of the Advertising and Marketing Intelligence (AMI) database, successor to the Issues Monitoring System (1970s) produced by the New York Times (NYT) Information Bank and the White House; a JWT/NYT advertising and marketing news database (1979) drawn from over 60 major business publications; and AD/KIT, or "Advertising Key Information Tracking System." Available by subscription and via telnet, AMI began in 1980 and tracked news items according to an advertising keyword index. The collection details the conception, announcement, and initial years of operation of AMI with financial data, marketing and management information, marketing research, and slide presentation scripts. Jill Gay is an analyst and consultant that has worked with NGOs, foundations, and governmental and international organizations on projects related to women, health, reproductive issues, and policy. In 1981, Gay and Isabel Letelier founded the Third World Women's Project (TWWP) at the Institute of Policy Studies (IPS); Gay was the Associate Director of the project until 1986. The project was designed to educate American audiences about issues in "third world" countries from the perspectives of female human rights activists living in those countries. The collection includes materials about twenty-five participants mostly from Latin America between 1982-1986 such as program evaluations, itineraries, reports, and clippings; writings by Jill Gay; files on the TWPP and IPS; posters and other ephemera related to the Letelier-Moffitt Human Rights Award held by the IPS; and other assorted materials between 1977-2006. Materials cover 1977-1984 but are mostly undated and relate to the founding and opening of Womankind Books, and its associated distribution activities and concerts on behalf of Olivia records. Includes flyers, newspaper articles and clippings, bookmarks, newsletter articles, advertisements, a catalog, press releases and posters for concerts, along with eight glossy black-and-white photographs of the musicians. There are also materials relating to fund raising activities undertaken by the Womankind Support Project, including on behalf of the Womankind Health Center, including mock-ups, mailers, and flyers for benefits; fund raising solicitations; and announcements. There are several items related to Powell's support of the Walter Mondale and Geraldine Ferraro campaign in 1984 and to Powell's campaign for Metropolitan County Council member at-large in 1983. There are also a few items related to Chicago's "Catch the Spirit" campaign in 1984. The Nicholas School of the Environment's Senior Professional Program traces its beginnings to 1979, when the School of Forestry and Environmental Studies first offered a program of short intensive courses. These courses have been offered since then as part of various named programs and centers, including the Intensive Course Program, the Continuing Education Program, and the Center for Environmental Education. As of 2013, the Senior Professional Program is the only one of these terms that remains in use as a formally named entity in the Nicholas School. The Nicholas School of the Environment's Senior Professional Program Records span the years 1977-1997 and contain correspondence with faculty, syllabi, notebooks, schedules, and other materials from intensive courses, workshops, and conferences offered as part of the Intensive Course Program, the Center for Continuing Education, the Center for Environmental Education, and the Senior Professional Program. Rainbow Triangle Oral History Collection, 1997-2006

The Rainbow Triangle Oral History Project was originally conceived in 1996 as a way to document the lives of LGBT (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender) people in the Triangle region in particular and central North Carolina in general. Ian Lekus became the Project Coordinator in 1996 and worked with a varying group of volunteers to acquire resources, conduct interviews, and ensure the preservation and access of the oral histories collected. More than 60 interviews were conducted between 1999 and 2004. The Rainbow Triangle Oral History Collection includes original oral history recordings, transcripts, biographical information on narrators, newsclippings, correspondence, and research materials.

The program was established in 1977 with funding from the Greater Charlotte Foundation. The program became fully operational in the 1978-1979 academic year under the directorship of Ralph Braibanti. Studies focused primarily on the Arabian Peninsula and its social, economic, and political developments, and on the resurgence of Islam, with some attention also paid to Arabic archaeology, art, language, law and literature. Collection contains primarily reports and other printed materials, along with conference programs, and a small amount of the Director's correspondence. Materials range in date from 1976-2000.

In addition to declassified US government documents (which comprise the bulk of material in this subseries), this subseries contains a number of informal reports related to Montesinos by human rights organizations as well as numerous newspaper and magazine clippings. Files related to information on coup attempts against Alberto Fujimori, the MRTA Japanese embassy hostage crisis of 1996-1997, and the Montesinos bribery scandal that served as a catalyst for the collapse of the Fujimori government are included. The Science, Technology and Human Values program (STHV), formerly known as the Science, Society, and Human Values Program, was begun in 1979 by James F. Gifford and Seymour Mauskopf as a unique interdisciplinary program focused on developing a comprehensive view of science, medicine, and technology in social, historical, and ethical terms. The collection contains director's files from 1979-1984 which include administrative and student correspondence, memoranda, student term papers, course syllabi and evaluations, and five cassette tapes of sessions at a STHV symposium on space travel. The collection also contains brochures for the Round Table on Science and Public Affairs, dated 1976-1983.

Poughkeepsie Mall, 1980s 22 prints

Portfolio consists of 22 black-and-white photographs taken by Vince Cianni at a Poughkeepsie, New York mall in the 1980s. The images explore youth and African American social culture, social aspects of the mall, and urban decay and its impact on society. The project is a companion piece to the Providence House Men's Shelter photographs which also focus on the effects of urban deterioration in New York State. The gelatin silver prints measure 11x14 inches.

Weddings, 1980s 5 boxes

This project explores the social and ritualistic aspects of weddings in the United States, and includes 184 images of ceremonies marking the unions of heterosexual and some transgender individuals taken by Cianni during the 1980s. This series includes Cianni's MFA project, "Wedding Rituals," a group of twenty-four 20x24 inch prints and one 16x20 print.

Providence House Men's Shelter, 1983 2 boxes

This series of images, a companion project to the Poughkeepsie Mall series, documents life for men in the Providence House Men's Shelter in Newburgh, New York in 1983, and urban decay during the 1980s and its impact on social life and conditions. The series houses 22 black-and-white gelatin silver photographic prints: one measuring 5 5/8 x 8 1/2 inches; one 5 7/8 x 9 inches; and 20 measuring 11x14 inches.

Collection of 848 color inkjet photographs taken by Rebecca Matlock while traveling and living in countries around the world, with a special focus on landscapes, churches and other buildings, people, and culture. Over half of the collection features images from the former Soviet Union during the Gorbachev administration (1980s-1990s), including Central Asia, the Republic of Buryatia, the Ukraine, and Moscow. Notable individuals include the Gorbachevs, Reagans, Bushes, and the Shevardnadzes, secretaries of state, politicians, and military officials. Other subjects include artists, writers, religious leaders, with one series given to dissident and scientist Andrei Sakharov. Other series include: the Republic of Georgia and Tbilisi during and after the civil war; the Czech Republic; the Middle East; the wall dividing Jerusalem; the fall of the Berlin Wall; and Peru. There are smaller groups from the Baltic States, France, Alaska, Hawaii, Japan, Hong Kong, and other places. An additional series has as its subject conductor and opera director Sarah Caldwell. There is also a series of abstract images titled Black and White in Color. Most of the prints in the collection were exhibited; thus there are roughly 100 printed items such as caption and title cards and fliers.

Manbites Dog Theater was a professional non-profit theater company founded in Durham in October 1987. Manbites Dog staged a variety of theatrical productions, with a focus on premieres of new works by working closely with playwrights, directors, actors, and artists. The theater mounted over 130 productions, many of them regional or state premieres. The theater closed in 2018. Collection includes a variety of administrative documents from these productions, including marketing materials, reviews, contracts, and box-office records. Maria de Bruyn is a medical anthropologist who worked for non-profit organizations in The Netherlands and United States, as well as international non-governmental and United Nations agencies, in the field of sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) with a special focus on HIV and AIDS and health-related human rights. She served on the Global Programme on AIDS Global Management Committee Task Force on HIV/AIDS Coordination as one of three nongovernmental organization (NGO) representatives; this Task Force contributed to establishing NGO participation in the governance of UNAIDS. She was also a co-founder of the ATHENA Network to advance gender equity and human rights in the global response to HIV and AIDS and worked with groups of women living with HIV on sexual and reproductive rights and advocacy. This collection includes de Bruyn's writings, work from her consultancies and other trainings and workshops, and her subject files on topics such as HIV/AIDS, sexual and reproductive health, human rights, condoms, discrimination, youth, sex work, and women's health issues. Subject files include brochures, ephemera, and artifacts such as condoms, buttons, and objects de Bruyn collected from her travels around the world.
