Eugene and Margaret Triman papers, 1944-1946

Eugene and Margaret Triman both served in the United States military during World War II; Eugene was a sailor and was stationed on submarines, and Margaret was a member of the Women's Army Corps. The majority of this collection consists of Eugene's letters to Margaret while the couple was dating and engaged to marry. There are also five photographs of their wedding day, in April 1946, as well as some newspaper clippings about Margaret's WAC service and two booklets on birth control.

Cuban people emigrated to the United States as refugees in 1980 during the Mariel Boatlift. A small percentage of them were imprisoned in the U.S. on felony charges, which are cause for deportation under immigration law. After a 1987 prison riot where Cuban detainees protested deportation, the migrants were granted an indefinite moratorium on deportation and a fair review of their case. A decade later many were still in federal detention centers awaiting review of their case, and they often wrote to Amnesty International for help. Collection consists largely of unsolicited correspondence from Cuban migrants written to Sarah Town while she interned with Amnesty International's Refugee Office. Acquired as part of the Human Rights Archive at Duke University.

Bound album measuring 8x6" with text containing a daily narrative of a 1922 trip by Mary Newby Tom and four others, accompanied by postcards and printed images of locations described. Most images are printed or commercially produced, with some original photographs included. Tom describes travelling by train from New York City to Niagara Falls, Chicago, Colorado, Arizona (including the Grand Canyon), California (including Long Beach, Los Angeles, and San Francisco), and Seattle, and then returning east through Canada.

The book includes materials from Toms' memorial service and death, including letters of condolence (all within their original envelopes), calling cards, newspaper clippings, church bulletins, and obituaries. It appears to have been accumulated and assembled by Mary Newby Toms Erwin, one of Toms' daughters, as she is the main recipient of the condolence notes.

At least during the latter part of the Civil War William E. Tolbert had a desk job. In 1864 he was In Nashville, and by March, 1865, had been transferred to Newbern, N. C., where he was with the Chief Engineer's Office, of U. S. Military Railroad in the Division of the Miss. He wrote that many refugees had come into the town after Gen. Schofield moved farther into the state.

Tice Company's "goose egg" scoreboard featured a mechanical goose that would deposit a zero ("goose egg") after a scoreless inning in baseball. A variation of the design included a gosling that would correct any errant deposits of zeros on the scoreboard. The intent was to provide humorous entertainment for fans at baseball games. Collection includes articles; blueprints and design notes; a promotional brochure with testimonials; photographs and prints of Tice's "goose egg' scoreboard design, a promotional display, along with images of college and municipal scoreboards intended for comparison to the Tice design. In this letter to the actress and playwright Elizabeth Robins, Thorndike thanks her for the gift of some heather from Yorkshire. She also sends her regards and thanks to "Lady Bell" for her support. The letter is addressed to Robins at Rounton Grange, the North Yorkshire estate which was the family home of the writer Florence Bell ("Lady Bell"). Bell and Robins were close friends and collaborators. Includes an 1851 letter to Kate Loder, called "Kit", which contains a doodled self-portrait by Thompson and describes his current illness. An undated letter from Henry James in the House of Commons seeks to secure a vote from MP W. H. Leatham, then suffering from gout and under Thompson's care. There are letters to Thompson from King George V (a thank you note, 1893), Empress Frederick of Germany (1891), and King Leopold II (1869, 1872, 1875, 1876, 1880). Some letters are directed to Henry's son Sir Herbert Thompson, including a condolence note from King George in 1904, following Henry Thompson's death. One letter from Thompson advocates the adoption of cremation.

Collection contains the records of the firm of Terrasson Brothers, established in Philadelphia by Antoine and Barthelemy Terrasson as a branch of their father's firm, John Terrasson and Company, headquartered in Paris and Lyons, France. Early business letters reflect the trade of the firm in grain, the furnishings of supplies to the French and American armies, and the purchase of tobacco at various places throughout the South. The letters contain information on the American Revolution, especially on naval operations, and on post-Revolutionary business conditions. Papers after 1800 concern the family of Mark Prager, members of which apparently married into the Terrasson family. Prager was owner of a trading firm in Holland. These papers contain information on Prager's trading activities until 1820, and on the family of Harriet Prager of Philadelphia. The later letters contain references to family affairs, slavery, politics and sectionalism. Approximately 100 Civil War letters describe conditions in the North.

Walter J. Taylor (1934-2002) was a Black man from California who was incarcerated multiple times from the 1950s through the 1970s, including a period at San Quentin and Folsom prisons (1968-1973). During this latter period in jail, Taylor founded the Sisters of Motivation and the Community Concern for Prisoners organizations to help Black Americans convicted of crimes. Collection consists largely of materials from Taylor's time in prison and later as a community activist in Berkeley, California. Most of the materials comprise Taylor's incoming correspondence during his incarcerations in the 1950s through the 1970s, which includes letters from a variety of people, especially women participating as pen pals in the Sisters of Motivation organization. Other frequent writers are Taylor's wives, girlfriends, family members, and community organizations that he had contacted regarding his imprisonment and the general condition of Black men in prison. Other materials include personal items documenting Taylor's life, as well as writings and creative works by Taylor. Acquired as part of the Human Rights Archive at Duke University.

This collection contains business, family, and official correspondence of Vincent Tapp, including information about the Tapp family; Tapp's career as a soldier; and an account book for the construction of the hall of Masonic Lodge No. 13, of which he was an active member. It also contains a volume, "Overseers of the Poor," which contains records of caring for poor people in Augusta County, Virginia, 1791-1822.
