Muriel Henderson papers, 1900-2009

Muriel Henderson (1920-2009) and her husband, Lawrence (Larry), were originally from Tacoma, Washington. They served as missionaries to Angola from 1947 to 1969 and eventually retired to Durham in the 1990s. The bulk of the papers relate Muriel Henderson's personal and family history (for the Woods and Henderson families). She lived with her husband Lawrence (Larry) Henderson in Angola doing missionary work from 1947 to 1969 and the collection includes many materials from this time (including journals and letters). Henderson kept in touch with people from Angola throughout the remainder of her life. The collection also includes many materials documenting her family's life in the early 20th century in the Pacific Northwest (mostly in or around Tacoma, Washington), including photographs, diaries, children's drawings and letters, school report cards, diplomas, letters, recollections (many typed) from family members, and ledgers of household expenses. Acquired as part of the Sallie Bingham Center for Women's History and Culture.

Judith Hennessee papers, 1950s-1999

The collection primarily contains materials related to Hennessee's writing career and her participation in the National Organization for Women (NOW). Most of the NOW materials concern its 1972 petition to the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to deny renewal of WABC-TV's license due to alleged discrimination against women in programming and employment. Included are legal documents; information related to NOW's monitoring study of WABC; reports pertaining to ABC and other television networks; and materials concerning the portrayal of women in the broadcast and print media, including several issues of the Media Report to Women newsletter. Other feminist materials include clippings, reports, political buttons and stickers, publications, and printed material, including several issues of the feminist literary magazine aphra and various women's organizations' newsletters. The collection also includes interview transcripts and other research materials for, correspondence about, and both a typescript and a published copy of Hennessee's biography Betty Friedan: Her life. Acquired as part of the Sallie Bingham Center for Women's History and Culture.

Paul Hamilton Hayne was a white Southern American poet and literary critic from Charleston, S.C., and Columbia County, Georgia. He supported the Confederacy and opposed Reconstruction in the post-war South. The papers illustrate Hayne's career and his personal and political views.

John Benjamin Harris is Professor Emeritus of Management and Marketing at Virginia State University. He pioneered governmental and commercial awareness of African American advertising markets and, in the 1970s, became the Director of the Virginia State Office of Minority Business Enterprise and Special Assistant to the Governor for Minority Enterprise. The John Benjamin Harris Papers span the years 1955-1991 and include scholarly articles, corporate reports and proposals, product labels, 16mm film reels, and audio tapes. Materials represent Harris' academic and professional work at New York University and Virginia State University as well as his work for the Virginia State Office of Minority Business Enterprise. Topics touched on in the collection include minority business enterprises; minority markets and minorities (especially African Americans) as consumers; and African American mass media. In addition, the collection reflects Harris' work for the advertising industry with employers including Cunningham & Walsh, Inc., the Leo Burnett Company, Inc., and the Ted Bates Company. Henry and Mary Hayne papers, 1797-1828

Henry Hayne acted as private secretary to Lord William Pitt Amherst, who led the Second British Embassy to China in 1816. This collection contains Hayne's diaries from the voyage of the embassy on the H.M.S. Alceste, and includes descriptions of their travels in Madeiras Islands, Rio de Janeiro, Cape Town, and various cities in the Chinese Empire including Guangzhou, Macau, Manila, Peking (Beijing), and Nanjing. There is also an account of the shipwreck of the Alceste and encounters with Malay pirates. One diary by Mary Hayne, Henry's first wife, records the Haynes' voyages between England and Rio de Janeiro in 1824 and 1828.

Item is a bound manuscript diary, 173 pages, containing a journal from Henry Haynes' voyage on the H.M.S. Alceste from Portsmouth, England, to Madeiras Island; Rio de Janeiro, Brazil; and Cape Town, South Africa.The journal also contains some sections on Hayne's visit to Canton (Guangzhou), China; Macau; and Manila.

    Henry Hayne diary volume 2, 1816 August 9-October 22 Box 1

    Item is a bound manuscript diary, 267 pages, containing the journal of Henry Hayne during the Amherst embassy's travels through China. This volume begins when the ship arrives at the mouth of the Pei-ho (Hai River). Hayne records their journey up the river from Tianjin towards Pekin, and documents their unsuccessful attempt to seek an audience with Emperor Jiaqing. The audience was refused following the British embassy's refusal to participate in "ca tow" (kowtow) to the emperor, and the convey sailed south, through China's interior, to Guangzhou, eventually arriving January 1, 1817.

      Henry Hayne diary volume 3, 1816 October 22-1817 January 1 Box 1

      Item is a bound manuscript journal with Hanye's diary from his travels with the Second British Embassy through China in late 1816. The journal begins when Hayne is with the embassy in Nanjing and ends with the embassy's arrival at the outskirts of Guangzhou. Many topics overlap with Volume 2. Hayne describes diplomatic matters, holidays and celebrations, the terrain and agricultural practices he witnesses, the physical appearances of different Chinese people (including women, soldiers, and other groups), and visiting different towns and cities along the Yangtze and other rivers between Peking (Beijing) and Canton (Guangzhou).

        Benjamin Hedrick papers, 1848-1893

        Benjamin Sherwood Hedrick was a white professor of chemistry at the University of North Carolina, 1854-1856, and U.S. Patent Office official, 1861-1886. Collection consists chiefly of letters to Hedrick. The early correspondence is between Hedrick and Mary Ellen Thompson, his future wife. Other correspondence concerns life at the University of North Carolina, Hedrick's dismissal from the University in 1856 for his Republican and anti-slavery opinions, and his life in the North during the Civil War period. Many of the post-1861 papers relate to Hedrick's position as chemical examiner at the Patent Office. Other topics include Reconstruction, the economic plight of the South, and politics, including Hedrick's attempt to win political office in North Carolina (1868). Correspondents include Kemp P. Battle, Daniel R. Goodloe, Horace Greeley, Hinton Rowan Helper, David L. Swain, John Torrey, and Jonathan Worth.

        William Helfand is a scholar of pharmaceutical history and art, and collector of ephemera and art related to medicine. The William H. Helfand Collection of Medical Prints and Posters consists of 34 prints and posters realted to the history of medicine and pharmacology, dating from 1695 to 1991, with the bulk of the prints dating from 19th century. Paris, France is the provenance for many of the posters, but several hail from England and the United States. The posters are represented in two formats: lithographs and engravings, some of which are hand colored. Ranging in size from 5"x8" to 19"x23", the prints include caricatures, political satire, comics and advertisements, dealing with a range of subjects from quacks, alchemy, charlatans and cheats, to pastoral and hospital scenes. George Cruikshank and Honoré Daumier are represented amongst the artists. Acquired as part of the History of Medicine Collections at Duke University.

          Contains Healy's description of the couple's tour of Japan, from May through October 1920. Includes her visit to the following places, among others: Yokohama, Tokyo, Kawakura, Matsushima, Aomori, Sappora, Nikko, Nagano, Mt. Fuji, Nara, Kyoto, and Kobe. Healy writes about her encounters with various aspects of Japanese culture and people, particularly geisha, public baths and onsen spas, cuisine, kimonos, Mikimoto pearls, temples, and the Ainu people.

            Vol. 2, 1920 Dec. 19-1921 Apr. 25 Box 1

            The diary is labeled "Jeanette Reid Healy, Pekin, Nov. 1920," but actually begins with an entry from Dec. 19, 1920, while the couple is in Hong Kong. Healy's entries in Hong Kong frequently mention playing golf and shopping. They also took a side trip to Macao before leaving for Saigon on Jan. 6, 1921.

              Vol. 3, 1921 May 15-1921 Nov. 21 Box 1

              The volume is title "Jeanette Reid Healy, Srinagar, Apr. 1921," and begins with an entry dated May 15, 1921. This volume describes the Healys' journeys around India and Pakistan, including the following places: Kuari Pass, Deosai Plains, Shizar, Khalatse, Himis, Nimu, Leh, Nurla, Kharbu, Pahalgam, Bawar, Bemi Sama, Kanabal, the Pir Panjal mountain range, and ending in Peshawar. The majority of the diary discusses their travel conditions, with some description of Augustus's hunting expeditions for ibex, bear, marmots, and red fox (of which he was largely unsuccessful). While in Bemi Sama, the couple participated in a bear beating: villagers beat the brush and forest, driving the bear toward the hunters. Healy describes this event in great detail. The volume ends on Nov. 21, 1921.

Collection comprises seven letters, five written by Ellen A. Hedrick during an international tour taken June-September 1904, one by Ellen's travel companion, C., in 1904, and one by her mother in 1900. Ellen Hedick's letters document her travels across England and Wales, France, Amsterdam, Holland, and Germany, with descriptions of manners, her surroundings, and modes of travel. Ellen's fellow traveler, C., also writes to an unidentified, intimate female friend, about the wedding of this friend's brother, the illness of a traveler, people she is meeting during her travels, and abundant fruit available. In her letter, Ellen's mother writes of plans she has for Ellen's visit, and requests sewing supplies for projects she has begun.

                      John F. Hogan was a sales representative and manager for several transportation advertising companies, from the 1940s to the 1970s, responsible for placing advertisements in and on buses, subways, trains, and transit stations in the northeastern United States, particularly New York and Connecticut. The John F. Hogan Papers span the years 1928-1992, with the bulk of the material dating from 1949 to 1972, and document Hogan's career as an executive in transportation advertising. The collection consists of photographs, contracts, poster samples, print publications and other printed material, and scrapbooks of transit advertising images, clippings, correspondence and memorabilia. Particularly represented in the collection is Hogan's work for the John H. Breck, Inc. hair-care company.

                      William Woods Holden papers, 1834-1929 and undated

                      William Woods Holden was a journalist and Republican governor of North Carolina during Reconstruction. He was the owner and editor of the North Carolina Standard newspaper from 1843 to 1860, during which time he and the paper were affiliated with the Democratic Party. He was elected governor as a Republican in 1868, but was impeached by the Democratic state legislature in 1870 for his efforts to combat the Ku Klux Klan. Collection consists of correspondence, memoirs, business papers, legal documents, poems, and other papers. Of note are depositions and other evidence gathered by Holden and his supporters of various members of the Ku Klux Klan, documenting their membership and activities during 1869-1870. Also includes Holden family papers, including scrapbooks and account books kept by Holden's wife and daughters.

                      Philip Holland family photographs, 1923-1927

                      Philip Holland lived with his wife, Corabelle Anderson, and their children, Philip (Pito) and Isabelle Holland, in Guatemala City from 1923-1927. Philip Holland worked for the U.S. Consul and served as the U.S. Consul General in Guatemala from 1924-1927. Collection consists of four photo albums with approximately 600 gelatin silver prints assembled and maintained by the Holland family during their years in Guatemala, 1923-1927. Three of the albums contain snapshots from the family's life in Guatemala City and travels in the country. The fourth album contains panoramic photographs of Guatemalan landscapes and cities by Boston photographer Henry J. Thayer. The collection's photographs feature the Holland family, especially their children, and their travels through Guatemala; street and market scenes from various towns and cities in Guatemala; church processions and parades; landscapes with Lake Atitlan and surrounding volcanoes, including Fuego and Agua; Mayan ruins, churches, palaces, and other Guatemalan architecture; local potters firing and selling pottery; railroads, streetcars, steamships, and other methods of transportation; the piers and beaches of San Jose, which apparently served as the port city for Guatemala; and various farms from the United Fruit Company. Geographic areas represented in the collection include Guatemala City, Antigua, Tecpan, Chichichastenango, Lake Atitlan, Solola, Escuintla, Panajachel, Quirigua, and the Quetzaltenango Valley.

Holgate, of his father, Curtis Holgate, and of William's daughter, Fannie Holgate Harley. Papers before 1852 relate mostly to legal and business affairs of Holgate and his father, including investments in Ohio land and New York railroads; papers of his daughter begin in 1872 and are concerned with family affairs, but also include references to birth control, abortions, a smallpox epidemic, and the education of women. Includes letters from students at Hamilton College and the University of Vermont in the 1830s; papers relating to land speculation; and material pertaining to the economic development of Defiance, Ohio, and internal improvements and education in Ohio for the period from 1830-1840.
