In 1996, Bitch: Feminst Response to Pop Culture was created by Lisa Jervis, Benjamin Shaykin, and Andi Zeisler. After having a hard time finding critiques of sexism in pop culture in magazines and self published zines, they decided to make their own. Their goals are to write about sexism in pop culture, propose alternatives, and promote pop products that are pro-woman and pro-feminism. The magazine's final issue was April 2022. The collection includes production records for magazine issues, editorial correspondence, research files, meeting notes, promotional and subscription material, audio cassette and mini-cassette tapes, VHS tape, mini-disks, color and black-and-white photographs, negatives, color transparencies, and t-shirts and tote bags. Acquired as part of the Sallie Bingham Center for Women's History and Culture.

Collection of fine art print and graphic design projects by Horse & Buggy Press in Durham, North Carolina, commissioned chiefly by non-profit organizations, small firms, individual authors and artists, and community events organizers. Formats include catalogs, broadsides, posters, newsletters, pamphlets and brochures, programs, and jacket and packaging designs for six audio and film recordings. Smaller projects include exhibit and book announcements, business cards, invitations, and menus for local restaurants. Chiefly consists of letterpress work, but there are also examples of offset and digitally printed items. Many projects involved the work of other artists and designers, and many were printed in limited editions. Content often includes poetry, prose excerpts, and quotes. Books and zines printed by Horse & Buggy Press have been separated from this collection and individually described for the Duke University Libraries catalog.

Collection consists of 37 large paper sheets bearing reduced-size reproductions of 83 panels that formed a 1993 exhibit narrating the history, culture, and customs of the Aydhoya region in India, now part of the state of Uttar Pradesh. It was organized by the curator Ram Rahman and SAHMAT (Safdar Hashmi Memorial Trust), a New Delhi-based collective of Indian artists, writers, and activists against communalism and violent extremism. Also includes 47 posters protesting extremist violence, created by the same organization. The exhibit illustrates the origins of the Babri Masjid mosque complex and its destruction by Hindu extremists in December 1992. The black-and-white and color reproductions, most without captions, include 16th century paintings; regional maps; plans and large color photographs of the mosque complex; details of sculptures, scripts, and reliefs; reproductions of English accounts; and photographs of area inhabitants as well as individuals associated with regional politics. There are also several texts in Hindi. The sheets measure approximately 28 1/4 x 38 1/4 inches. Posters are sized approximately 17 x 21 3/4 inches. Detailed information on the original 1993 exhibit and its historical context is found in a 2012 publication on the exhibit, available in the Duke Libraries.

The Neighborhoods Project was created as part of the Community Programs department within Duke's Center for Documentary Studies. According to the CDS website, it offered North Carolina elementary school teachers an innovative and effective way to meet social studies goals outlined in the state's standard course of study. The project provided a way to engage students in their own communities, focusing on their individual lives and stories through photographs, narrative writing, and storytelling. It provided a series of experiential learning activities that encouraged the use of photography, oral history, and narrative writing in an exploration of community and citizenship. Collection includes black-and-white photographs, negatives, and slides from projects created by students at Durham's E.K. Powe and W.G. Pearson elementary schools between 1997 and 2004. The images document the social life and the built environment in Durham, N.C., in city neighborhoods where the students live; they feature children, pets, houses and places of business, groups of adults, and other neighborhood scenes where whites, African Americans, and Spanish-seeking citizens live. Some materials are in Spanish. Also includes some student booklets and publications highlighting their projects as part of the program. Acquired as part of the Archive for Documentary Arts.

Abercrombie and Fitch was founded in 1892 as a sporting goods supplier and expedition outfitter. It currently specializes in upscale sportswear aimed at children and young adults. The Abercrombie & Fitch Quarterly Catalog Collection consists of a run of lifestyle-oriented clothing catalogs issued between 1997 and 2007. The catalog featured articles on a wide range of youth popular culture and lifestyle topics, along with numerous photographs by Bruce Weber. Articles included advice, music and movie reviews, and profiles and interviews with celebrities and cultural critics such as philosopher Slavoj Žižek. The Creative Director for the catalog series was Sam Shahid, who had previously worked in the in-house advertising agencies for Calvin Klein and Banana Republic. After 2003, the lifestyle content and controversial photography was scaled back to focus more narrowly on seasonal fashion.

Dorsey & Whitney LLP is a Minneapolis-based business law firm whose lawyers took on the pro bono cases of Bahraini detainees at the Guantánamo Bay detention center. The Dorsey & Whitney Records span the years 1997-2008, with the majority of the materials created between 2004 and 2008. The records consist largely of legal papers, news clippings, writings and correspondence regarding the cases of six Bahraini detainees: Jumah Al-Dossari, Abdullah Al-Nuaimi, Isa Al-Murbati, Salah Al-Balooshi, Adel Hajji and Salman bin Ibrahim Al-Khalifa, kept under extra-judicial detention by the U.S. military at Camp Delta, Guantánamo Bay Naval Base, Cuba. A team of three lawyers, Mark S. Sullivan, Joshua Colangelo-Bryan and Christopher G. Karagheuzoff took on the cases of Bahraini detainees pro bono in 2004. The records in this collection document the lawyers' legal motions, public campaigns and diplomatic negotiations for writ of habeas corpus and the release and repatriation of the Bahraini detainees. Many of these documents are also present in electronic form. The records are arranged in four series: Case Files, Correspondence, Publicity, and Digital Files. Acquired as part of the Human Rights Archive.

Also contains some material from Maitland's personal projects, as well as buttons, cassettes, stickers, and other ephemera.

"Bill" Burk, retired, botany librarian at the John N. Couch Biology Library, University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. Collection comprises three folders of letters written to Burk by botanist Sherwin Carlquist. The majority of the letters are accompanied by examples of Carlquist's black-and-white 8"x10" landscape photographs, including seven photographic prints on enlarging paper, as well as scanned copies printed on a laser printer. There are also advertisements for Carlquist's books of landscape photographs featuring male nudes. The letters are most often general holiday greetings Carlquist mailed to all his friends, usually annotated with specific notes to Burk; others are personal letters to Burk. Carlquist's letters mainly provide information regarding the accompanying photographs and his artistic approach to photography, especially the male nudes; there is additional commentary on the history of botany; his writing, publication, and research projects; the work of other scientists; and his personal life. Other topics include gay fiction and culture, the challenges of being gay in academe, and circumcision. The Full Frame Documentary Film Festival is the largest film festival in the United States entirely devoted to documentary film. Originally the DoubleTake Documentary Film Festival, it is an international event dedicated to the theatrical exhibition of non-fiction cinema, held annually since 1998 in downtown Durham, North Carolina. Typically, more than 100 films are screened, along with discussions, panels, and workshops fostering conversation between filmmakers, film professionals and the public. The Full Frame Archive was created in 2007, as a partnership between Duke University and Full Frame. The Full Frame Archive Film Collection comprises preservation masters of documentary films that won awards at the Full Frame Film Festival between 1998 and 2012. Formats include 35mm film, 16mm film, Digital Betacam cassette, HDCAM cassette, Betacam SP cassette, and DVD. In addition, there is a complete set of festival program books. The films vary widely in topic and style, with a predominant emphasis on human rights issues; all of the films deal with social issues in one way or another. The collection is organized chronologically, by festival year, and acquisitions are ongoing.

David Mamet, b. 30 Nov., 1947, Chicago; was a writer, director, producer, and actor; sometimes credited as Richard Weisz. Collection comprises the bound typescript of Mamet's 1999 play Boston Marriage, which uncharacteristically focused on female leads, and was set at the turn of the 20th century. The manuscript is 137 pages, printed on rectos only, bound in printed yellow cardstock with the Rosentone Wender Agency address in NY. Inscribed by Mamet: "To Gwen. For a loyal friend of the A.R.T. [American Repertory Theater] -- some merchandise for your loyalty. May it amuse you, provoke your ire, shim up a chair, or start a fire. Love - David Mamet." With an additional doodle (of the author wearing an A.R.T. baseball cap) and his Mamet stamp, which also appears on the front cover. The script has a print date of December 1998, more than six months before the play premiered. The inscription has a date of June 3, 1999, about two weeks before the June 16 premiere at A.R.T. The recipient was on the Advisory Board of the theater and also a major donor to it. In a folding chemise and custom clamshell case.

Collection contain images related to two photography projects by Sarah Hoskins. The Homeplace series contains 250 11x14 inch silver gelatin prints documenting Hoskins' visits and relationships with rural African American communities in Kentucky, originally established by freedmen in the 19th century. Her photographs include community events and activities such as hog butchering, church services, family reunions, and gatherings of charity groups. The Rosenwald Schools series contains approximately 300 color digital images of schools for African Americans built during the first half of the 20th century through the Rosenwald foundation, as well as some portraits of former students in Kentucky, North Carolina and Alabama. The series also includes images of a Rosenwald foundation-funded apartment building in Chicago, Illinois. Acquired by the Archive of Documentary Arts.

The Durham Traditional Arts Survey was conducted in the early 2000s as part of the Document Durham project within the Community Programs department at the Center for Documentary Studies. Participants consisted of folklorists and photographers who traveled through Durham County, attempting to document the diversity of various communities by focusing on traditional artists within those communities. One outcome of the DTAS was the Home Made Visible: Durham 2002 exhibition, which highlighted Durham traditional arts and crafts. Includes fieldwork reports, interview tapes, slides, photographs, and other documentary material from the research and observations conducted by participants in the Durham Traditional Arts Survey Project. Durham communities and artists represented in the project include African American, African immigrants, Latino, Middle Eastern, Jewish, South Indian, and Asian, as well as occupational traditions and rural community traditions. Census 2000 sought to count and classify a record number of the American population, emphasizing the changing demographics of the country. This collection was donated to the John W. Hartman Center for Sales, Advertising, & Marketing History by Sybil F. Stershic, a member of the Census Advisory Committee of Professional Associations for Census 2000. The collection includes a Census 2000 advertising binder, several informational and promotional posters, a partnership informational kit, and two special reports. Ben Brody (born 1979) is a photojournalist, photo editor, and educator based in Massachusetts. Between 2003-2008, Brody served in the United States military stationed in Iraq, and between 2010-2015, was a civilian photographer in Afghanistan, documenting the "Global War on Terror." Afterwards, he published his photography in Attention Servicemember (2019), Can We Get a War Thread Going? (2016), Endgame Afghanistan (2017), and 300M (2022). The collection includes 130 photographic prints of varying sizes and mostly in color, in Iraq, Afghanistan, and in the United States, with accompanying location, date, signature, and caption or longer narrative description by Brody. Images depict military members from the United States, Afghanistan, and Iraq, and occasionally civilians; military activity and leisure; military outposts and local towns; and time in the United States, particularly in Massachusetts. Accompanying the prints are Brody's published works, book dummies, and design iterations; collected military manuals, visual guides, country handbooks, and Brody's personal military documents; and other assorted materials. Collection comprises 25 black-and-white and 48 color photographs taken from 2001 to 2012 by Marion Belanger, documenting the intersection of natural and human-built environments. Belanger's series "Everglades," taken in Florida between 2001-2004, presents images of wildlife and natural landscapes affected by the impacts of tourism, agriculture, migrant worker housing, construction, and activities of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and the U.S. Army. Her portfolio "Rift/Fault," shot between 2006-2012, documents zones in California and Iceland where the San Andreas Fault and the Mid-Atlantic Rift exist - visibly or invisibly - alongside human environments; subjects in this series include housing developments, monitoring stations, geologic features and landscapes, coastal roads, and geothermal structures such as greenhouses. The digital inkjet prints in both series measure 13 or 13 1/2 x16 inches. Both projects were published as photobooks (2009 and 2012, respectively). Daniel Levinson Wilk is a historian. Muravchik was a longtime staff member of the Socialist Party of America and the Jewish Labor Committee. Collection comprises an audiocassette tape of the oral history interview conducted by Wilk with Emanuel Muravchik while Wilk was completing his graduate work at Duke University. The interview primarily focused on Muravchik's career in the Socialist Party, particularly from the 1920s to the 1950s, and mostly in New York State. There is no transcript for the interview, and two digital files have been created from the audiocassette.

Kingsolver reworked more than a dozen passages to remove any mention of mushrooms, and presented the resulting manuscript to her friend Margaret Randall. Includes an autographed postcard transmitting the gift, laid-in, along with the box Kingsolver used to mail the volumes to Randall in December 2002.

D.T. Suzuki was a scholar of Zen Buddhism, often attributed with introducing Zen to the West. He was born in Japan in 1870, and after working as a translater in the United States, began writing books and essays about Zen. He spent much of his life traveling around the United States speaking about Eastern religions and teaching at Columbia University. An enormously influential figure, he is cited by artists and thinkers as disparate as Carl Jung and John Cage as an important influence on thier work. The D.T. Suzuki Documentary Project Collection is comprised of taped material, amassed by Michael Goldberg in the making of his documentary A Zen Life - D.T. Suzuki. It consists of a series of interviews conducted between the years 2002 and 2005, as well as a lecture given at Tokyo University by Prof. Brian Victoria.

Documentary photographer based in New York State. The color images in the Jonathan Hyman Photographs collection were taken by Hyman from 2002 to 2011, and portray vernacular memorials and other forms of public remembering that express anger, sadness and patriotic emotions following the 9/11 attack on the World Trade Centers and the Pentagon. Images take the form of graphic art, signs, sculpture, body art, and graffiti. Iconic elements include the U.S. flag, eagles, and the Twin Towers. Canvases for these forms of expression include clothing, buildings, vehicles, and tombstones. Most of the 33 large 20x24" inkjet prints were featured in Duke University exhibit Flesh & Metal, Bodies & Buildings: Works from Jonathan Hyman's Archive of 9/11 Vernacular Memorials, curated by Pedro Lasch. Darrin Zammit Lupi is an award-winning photojournalist based in Malta whose work often focuses on issues related to refugees, immigration, migrants, and disasters in Europe and globally. The collection includes five bodies of documentary work with 100 photographic prints and approximately 20,000 digital files of low-resolution and full resolution images, video, supporting journalistic documents and data, and web archived content of Zammit Lupi's website. The "Malta Detention" project consists of color photographs taken between 2004-2013 of African migrants and asylum seekers in Malta detention camps. The "On Board the MV Aquarius" project comprises color photographs and materials compiled in December 2017 while on board a migrant search and rescue ship operated by the non-profit organizations SOS Méditerranée and Médecins sans frontières. "Journeys of Hope-Refugees in the Balkans" includes color photographs and files created in 2016 while documenting migrants and refugees in the Balkans. "Migrants within the Maltese Community" project entails color photographs and files compiled between 2002-2018 documenting the circumstances of migrants once they leave transitional housing or "open centers." The "Migrants at the Ukraine/Poland Border" includes mostly black-and-white prints alongside color images and other digital files documenting Ukrainian refugees after Russia's invasion in 2022. The Lewis Hine Documentary Fellows Program (LHDFP) is administered by the Center for Documentary Studies at Duke University to support documentary photographers who address humanitarian issues in the U.S. and abroad. The Lewis Hine Fellowship Photographs Collection represents a selection of images from the documentary projects of seven LHDFP fellows: Alex Fattal, Maital Guttman, Kate Joyce, Jonna McKone, Elena Rue, Amanda van Scoyoc, and Lucy Wilson. The photographic images and videos in the collection depict home and community life of disadvantaged families and children in several sub-Saharan African nations (South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Ethiopia), as well as Massachusetts and New Jersey. They show everyday life and activities, such as children playing and completing chores, mothers cooking meals, disabled children going to school, household living conditions, and impoverished orphans and HIV-positive children in their familial situations, as well as funerals and school presentations (among other community events). In addition to photographic prints, there are also some documents relating to the projects, DVDs of the photographers' documentary work, and an archived version of the LHDFP website. Collection comprises twenty-five black and white gelatin silver 16x20 inch exhibit prints, representing a larger body of work on contemporary Iowa rural culture. The images portray a changing Midwest of vanishing towns and transformed landscapes. Scenes include cemeteries, slaughterhouses, farms, abandoned grain elevators, and fields. Individuals inhabiting the scenes include young people at leisure, fishermen on the Mississippi, hunters in fields, veterans on Memorial Day, Amish families, as well as more recent arrivals to Iowa, Lubavitcher Hasidic Jews at prayer and migrant workers in the fields and at home. The prints are housed in exhibit mats. Acquired as part of the Archive of Documentary Arts at Duke University.

The collection consists of thirty-two 9x13 inch untitled digital color inkjet photographs taken by Benjamin Lowy, documenting the U.S. military presence in Iraq from 2003 to 2008. The prints are arranged in two series: Windows and Nightvision. Images in the Windows series were taken from the bulletproof windows of the armored Humvees in which Lowy spent most of his time while on missions in Iraq; they depict street scenes with Iraqi civilians, tanks, soldiers, checkpoints, military impoundments, street life, urban Iraqi culture, and a war-ravaged Iraqi landscape. Taken through U.S. military-issue night vision goggles, photographs in the Nightvision series reveal greenish images of late-night raids, prisoners and soldiers, landscapes, families, women, and street scenes. The images in this collection were published in 2011 as a photobook titled Iraq | Perspectives. Acquired as part of the Archive of Documentary Arts at Duke University.

Collection comprises 464 original 4x6 inch color snapshots, 23 13x19 inch color inkjet exhibit prints; roll negatives; and text panels for the exhibit, "Photographs by Iraqi Civilians, 2004." The images are a result of a project, "Iraq From Within," coordinated by the North Carolina-based Daylight Community Arts Foundation, which encouraged Iraqi civilians to document through photographs and captions a point of view unavailable to the foreign press. The original color snapshots, taken by men and women chiefly in Baghdad and Fallujah, show families at home and in their neighborhoods, various workplaces, and scenes of wartime destruction. Taken as a whole, the collection conveys the impacts on men, women, and children of the 2003 U.S. invasion and occupation of Iraq. Acquired as part of the Archive of Documentary Arts at Duke University.

Christopher Sims is a documentary photographer from Atlanta, Georgia, currently on the faculty at Duke University, Durham, N.C. The 71 color digital photographs in this collection appear in his book, The Pretend Village: Inside the U.S. Military Training Grounds (2021). The photographs were taken by Sims from 2005-2018 at fictitious Iraqi and Afghan villages constructed on U.S. Army bases in remote areas of North Carolina and Louisiana, and in Death Valley, California. Images taken between military training exercises show actors, many of them real-life immigrant Afghans and Iraqis, playing police officers, doctors, craftspeople, farmers, and café owners. Images taken during training include American soldiers in motion or at rest, fictional civilians and insurgents, and simulations of dead or wounded soldiers and civilians. Other images are of buildings, streets, fake interiors, props, rubble, and graffiti and murals. The inkjet prints measure 17x22 inches. Acquired as part of the Archive of Documentary Arts at Duke University.

Sometimes resembling diptychs, the images juxtapose and recontextualize family photographs, personal objects such as clothing, spoons, and earrings, and contemporary self-portraits, exploring themes of migration, cross-cultural understanding, women and family, identity, and memory. The organization Facing History and Ourselves National Foundation was formed in the U.S. in 1976 to offer support for teaching about social justice in the classroom and in the community. Collection comprises seven regional calendars of programs offered in 2006-2007 by the Foundation. Printed as color brochure mailers, the calendars list detailed entries for classes and workshops for teaching the history of African Americans, civil rights, social justice movements, genocide, the Holocaust, and transitional justice; and to address injustices and violence in the present day by studying human behavior. The programs were held in Chicago, Cleveland, the Denver area, Los Angeles, New England, New York, and the San Francisco/Bay Area. Included are two printed notices about the course listings; one is addressed to the Board Members.

Nearly all the images are portraits ranging from staff at the Harvard Art Museum, one of Dugan's earliest projects, to gender non-conforming people, gay men and women, and transgender people.
