Stuart Walter Case (1819-1876) was a white store clerk, originally from Indiana, who moved to Arkansas in the late 1830s. This collection consists of his letters home to his father, Thomas Case, which describe Stuart Case's experiences in Fayetteville, Arkansas between 1838-1840. The letters document his eyewitness account of the Trail of Tears through Fayetteville, with discussions of the animosity between different Cherokee factions; the exploitative businesses that sprang up to provision the forced emigrants along their route; and the bustling, diverse, and increasing violent community in Fayetteville.
Letter believed to be from Abram Case (Stuart Case's brother) to his father Thomas Case, describing his route and travel to Clinton, Alabama. He describes traveling through Louisville and then suffering through poor weather and a lame horse. He also describes the local population in Clinton, noting "the people are rough and disapated drunkness prevails." He uses a racist slur to describe local Black citizens.
Stuart writes with an update on the circumstances surrounding him in Fayetteville, describing "this county, and town in particular, has become one of the most lawless and uncivilized places in all creation.... Shooting, stabbing, knocking down and dragging out, appear to be the order of the day and present in this place. In fact the Cherokee Nation is almost (to use a horse racers phrase) distanced, in the race for savageness -- Great many honest well-meaning men are leaving the country, selling their property at considerable discount rather than to stay."
Case explains that he has taken a new position, managing a grocery for Mr. James Sutton in Fayetteville, and that he now boards at the Fayette Ville Hotel and has moved away from Oakland. He disparages Oakland, describing the stores there as "being the most doggish, dirty holes you ever had any conception of, drunken Indians laying all about... there has been three men killed within the last two weeks within a compass of ten miles...." He continues, "where I am now there is great difference, the people being generally very civil and orderly, some very fine and have been well raised, and all uncommonly friendly."

Mary Gorham Paine (b. 1843) of Yarmouth, Massachusetts, was married to Eben W. Paine (1835-1904) of Brewster, Massachusetts, a merchant ship captain in the trade between Boston and Zanzibar. They had one son, Allan Thatcher Paine (b. 1882). The collection consists of a single diary kept by Mary Gorham Paine as she traveled twice by ship from Boston to islands near Madagascar. Forty-six manuscript pages provide both a day-by-day account of her trip aboard the Sarah Hobart to Nossi-Be (present day Nosy Be) from December 25, 1879 to May 4, 1880, and a three-page, mid-journey synopsis of the passage with her young son to Reunion Island, begun on December 13, 1883. As is made clear by the text, the intent of both voyages was to join her husband who was probably located in Zanzibar at the time. Newspaper clippings chiefly concerned with literary topics, news and issues relating to Africa, and obituaries for her husband and others are pasted into 18 pages following the narrative portion of the diary together with a photograph of a man and another of a baby, most likely her husband and son. The diary as a whole provides some insight into the life of a sea captain's wife and a description of long-distance ocean travel aboard a barque such as the Sarah Hobart.

At the beginning he listed the titles and prices for the medical reference books he purchased. He then recorded 30 pages of remedies and cures, and provided a 4-page manuscript index to this material bound in at the back of the volume. He also included notes on course instruction (at one point mentioning the lectures of Nathaniel Chapman). The balance of the volume is, however, a record of over 750 obstetric deliveries that Haworth accomplished during his career, some with full case histories. The organization of the notebook is somewhat confused because Haworth stitched in pages with notes written longitudinally among the original medical course lecture notes he retained. The obstetric entries date from 1846-1894; there are two clippings inserted, one dated 1908.

Methodist minister who preached in New Hampshire and Massachusetts. Born in Salisbury, Mass., in 1830, to Jonathan Cilley and Abigail Fowler; married Sarah A. Eaton in 1849, and died after 1910. Collection comprises a volume, 250 pages, filled with handwritten religious essays (called themes or lectures, which are sometimes separated into chapters), on the topics of natural theology, theism, and creationism versus evolution. Whether the essays were written to support the author's theological studies, as material to be presented in convocations, or in response to the scientific revelations or debates of the time is unclear; however, a reader with initials "J.W.M" read, notated, and provided short comments on the contents. Cilley provided a few ink drawings, including a chart showing the geologic strata and time periods, as well as an image of the human heart. Many essays contain citations to theological writings of the period. Among the many philosophers and writers covered are Aristotle, Benedict Spinoza, Thomas Hobbes, d'Alembart, Diderot, Voltaire, Alexander Pope, David Hume, Hugh Miller, and Enoch Pond.

The National Biscuit Company was founded in 1898, the product of a merger among the American Biscuit and Manufacturing Company, the New York Biscuit Company, and the United States Baking Company. The new conglomerate was headquartered in New York City with 114 bakeries across the United States. Over the next several decades the company grew by acquiring companies such as the F.H. Bennett Company, maker of Milk-Bone Pet Products, and the Shredded Wheat Company, maker of Triscuit Wafers and Shredded Wheat Cereal. The name "Nabisco" was first used as the name for a cracker introduced in 1901, but the corporate name did not change to Nabisco until 1971. The Uneeda Biscuit, National Biscuit Company's first packaged cracker, was the subject of the company's first million-dollar advertising campaign. Collection comprises a photograph album containing 129 gelatin silver prints and two cyanotypes by anonymous photographers. The majority of the photographs feature storefront and grocery displays of National Biscuit Company cookies and crackers, including Oreos, Animal Crackers, Fig Newtons, Graham Crackers, Uneeda Biscuits, among others. Several of the photographs indicate that the images were taken in Buffalo, New York, and many document the National Biscuit Company's sales force there, posed formally, attending sales meetings, or engaged together in leisure activities. The album also contains photographs of horse drawn delivery wagons, a display for Milk Bone dog biscuits, children dressed in costumes that promote company products, and a classroom of children "playing store."

The first volume of Lloyd's diary, which chronicles 1923, documents her life within the domicile. Each day, she writes about performing a variety of chores, from dusting entire rooms to washing all the silver in the house. Similarly, she accompanies her mother as she shops daily throughout London. Two of the destinations that they frequent are Kensington and West. Most of the purchases that they make revolve around food and are often times the ingredients for that night's dinner. Throughout the diary, Lloyd also indicates that she maintains a few correspondences over the year. She frequently writes to her friends Ellie Wills and Sytha. She also maintains a constant communication with a man named Russell. They talk on the telephone often, and she has him over for dinner a few times over the year. In April, Lloyd wrote about the Royal Wedding that took place between Prince Albert and Lady Elizabeth. In school, Lloyd is studying both French and Italian. Based on her accounts of each class, French is easier for her to learn, and there are times where she exclaims how well she is picking it up versus how poorly she is understanding Italian. Every week, Lloyd attends church with her mother, and sometimes her Auntie May accompanies them.
The second volume of Lloyd's diary, which chronicles her 1924 year, indicates both a continued presence in the home but also her increasing independence. While she still goes shopping with her mother frequently, Lloyd also begins to do things without her mother's guidance and help. For example, midway through the year (around July), she began to go on daily walks with her sister to Colwyn Bay (Wales) without the company of her mom. Lloyd also picks up both the piano and the violin in her free time, and she becomes an avid reader. On many occasions, she would stay in bed until it was time for dinner because she was so invested in whatever book she was reading at the time. Lloyd also continued the dance lessons that she began the year before. She also appeared to increase her commitment to dance, as she began practicing multiple times per week without fail.

William Bell was a photographer from Philadelphia. He was employed in 1872 by the U.S. Geographical and Geological Explorations and Surveys West of the 100th Meridian, a United States Army survey team. Collection includes sixteen gold-toned albumen prints, printed from negatives made by William Bell on the Wheeler Expedition of 1872. Fourteen photographs are from Arizona, two from Utah. Primary subjects include landscapes of the Grand Canyon and Colorado River. Some of Bell's photographs from this expedition were used for prints in George M. Wheeler's Report Upon United States Geographical Surveys West of the One Hundredth Meridian...(Washington: GPO, 1875-1889). In the field Bell prepared his own dry-plate negatives, a photographic process somewhat uncharacteristic for his time. he This process allowed him to store prepared plates longer than his contemporaries, who used wet plates, but would have also increased the exposure times for his plates.

William Atkinson was baptized on March 8, 1679. He appears to have been an amateur theologian or preacher in Great Britain. The collection consists of a handmade, leather-bound notebook that possibly belonged to William Atkinson. Compact handwriting fills all 96 pages plus the inside front and back covers with extracts taken from the works of contemporary theologians including John Tillotson's sermons, William Nichols's Defence of the Doctrine and Discipline of the Church of England, and Richard Baxter's Now or Never; along with Atkinson's commentary on the extracts and potentially original theological reflections or sermons by him. The choice of extracts, the inclusion of entries on Quaker theology, and the nature of Atkinson's criticism suggest that he took a non-conformist stance against the Church of England. The notebook is undated, but refers to the year 1715 on page four.

Includes an advertising pamphlet (15 pgs.) for "perfect bust development," an order blank, and a sheet of endorsements. The advertising pamphlet explains flat-chestedness as follows: "In the natural order of things, maternity would have occurred early enough to prevent the loss of the busts. Hence it is that there are a multitude of women who are well developed in all other respects, but find to their chagrin that the busts are gradually disappearing." (p. 6)
