Collection comprises a set of 48 color photographs, 13 reproductions of historic postcards, and several introductory panels, from a project by photographer and artist Nate Larson entitled "Map of All the Railroads," inspired by H.V. Poor's "Map of All the Railroads in the United States in Operation and Progress" (1854). The 13x19 inch digital color photographs, taken in 2015, explore social and economic aspects of thirteen railroad-centered cities and towns identified in Poor's publication, and their progress and potential future. Images feature cityscapes, railroad tracks, buildings and businesses, abandoned sites, monuments, several portraits of people, and other subjects. Rick Lang was a photographer and faculty member at the Creadlé School of Art, Winter Park, Florida. Collection comprises 229 black-and-white photographs documenting the American South, particularly Florida and Louisiana, with an emphasis on roadside advertising and signs, small businesses, and weathered buildings. There are also a few images from New Mexico and Arizona. Print sizes range from 11x14 to 20x24 inches. Accompanying the prints are 104 digital image files and one pdf, over 3000 negatives, and 258 contact sheets. In addition there are print materials chiefly associated with Lang's solo and group exhibits, including three photobooks, and condolences sent upon his passing in 2013. Large souvenir folio album from the Yokohama studio of Japanese photographer Kimbei Kusakabe, featuring 100 hand-tinted albumen prints on original mounts, most with title labels in English. Also included are the highly decorated black lacquer covers and original presentation box. Most of the prints measure approximately 8 1/8 x 10 3/8 inches; the mounts are sized 10 1/4 x 14 inches. Images were designed to appeal to tourists, and portray crafts and trades; rice cultivation; tea houses; hotels, gardens, temples, and other scenes, mostly in Kyoto, but also including Kobe, Yamato, Nagasaki, and Arima. Portraits of people include: geishas bathing, playing musical instruments, and dressing; Samurais and Sumo wrestlers; rural inhabitants; a physician; a rickshaw and passengers; a funeral; and numerous other subjects typical of these albums. A few of the prints are attributed to other photographers, notably Baron Raimund von Stillfried. Acquired as part of the Archive of Documentary Arts at Duke University.

Collection comprises 80 color inkjet prints selected from photographer Justin Kimball's projects, "Elegy" and "Pieces of String." The images were taken between 2007 and 2016 in small towns in Massachusetts, New York State, and Pennsylvania, places whose cultural fabric and economic livelihood have been deeply affected by 20th century deindustrialization. The images in the "Elegy" series depict working class neighborhoods, abandoned buildings and industrial sites, and people gathered on streets and porches, leaning out of windows, and playing ball games. The images in "Pieces of String" are of the interiors of abandoned houses and other buildings, taken as the photographer accompanied his brother, an auctioneer, to these properties; all that is left, as revealed in the images, are the artifacts of the former residents' lives, and the decay of the building and the contents within. All prints measure 13x19 inches. Acquired as part of the Archive of Documentary Arts at Duke University.

Set of 96 black-and-white glass lantern slides used in the United States for the teaching of history and geography. All of the slides except one were published by the Keystone View Company of Meadville, Pennsylvania. The 97th slide is a clear film transparency of a map of Germany following World War I, published by the Excelsior Illustration Company. Images include well-known United States historic sites; landmarks in colonial cities such as Williamsburg and Boston; views and cultural scenes from the Middle East, Japan, Hawaii, Korea, and the Philippines; a U.S. suffragists' parade in 1913; a set of Japanese and Western wedding scenes; and a few images of U.S. troops taken during the Mexican, Cuban and Philippine conflicts and in World War I. One slide shows the ruins of Belleau, France, circa 1918. Another features a memorial portrait of Secretary of State John Hay (d. 1905). The slides all measure 4 x 3.25 inches. They are accompanied by two booklets with detailed narrative entries for most of the slides. Acquired as part of the Archive of Documentary Arts at Duke University.

Collection of 31 black-and-white photographs by André Kertész provides a sampling of his compositional styles and topical interests. Taken from 1919 through 1984, the images chiefly feature street scenes from Paris (1920-1984), and several each from Budapest and New York City. There are also two female nude studies from his 1930s series "Distortions," two still lifes, and several landscapes. The majority of the gelatin silver prints are sized 8x10 inches, with four measuring 11x14 inches. On the backs are various markings, including dates and identifying marks by Kertész and others, with many bearing a Kertész estate stamp. Acquired as part of the Archive of Documentary Arts at Duke University.

Sometimes resembling diptychs, the images juxtapose and recontextualize family photographs, personal objects such as clothing, spoons, and earrings, and contemporary self-portraits, exploring themes of migration, cross-cultural understanding, women and family, identity, and memory. Collection comprises 43 3.5 x 2.5 black-and-white photographs of Dese, Ethiopia, primarily featuring groups of people and local infrastructure. The photographer is unknown. Images include native tribunals and prisoners, the nobility, Coptic priests, water bearers, processions, a local calvary unit, a slave, roads, houses, fountains, wells, a Coptic school, and the local market, among others. There are handwritten captions and dates (including Roman numerals for the Fascist year) in Italian on the backs of the majority of the photographs; a one-page English translation for the captions is provided.

Collection comprises a photograph album maintained by an Italian soldier stationed in Ethiopia during the Second Italo-Ethiopian War and the subsequent Italian occupation of the region. The soldier is unidentified, but his name may be the one that is embossed on the lower right-hand corner of the album's leather cover. On the first page of the album is a postcard announcing the Italian troop's victorious entry into Addis Ababa. Comprises 133 black-and-white photographs, ranging in size from 2"x1" to 4.75"x6", of the A.O.I. (Africa Orientale Italiana). The photographs are divided into groups by city, and many have captions written in Italian. Cities and other locations mentioned include Axum, Scire, Gondar, Cheren, Asmara, Lake Tana, Adua, and Addis Ababa, among others. In addition to images of military maneuvers, there are photographs of social customs and conditions (markets, native buildings, hairdos, priests, pilgrims, ceremonies, families, etc.), wildlife, and landscapes.

The images in the collection were taken by British photographer R. B. (Randolph Bezzant) Holmes and possibly others from his studio who traveled with him. Holmes was the owner of the R. B. Holmes & Co. photography studio in Peshawar, Pakistan. Of the 208 prints in the collection, one hundred two are loose, 11.5 x 9.5" black-and-white photographic prints of Afghanistan, India, and Pakistan. The remaining 106 prints are mounted in three commercial albums whose subjects range widely, from Afghan War-period images of the Khyber Pass, Landi Khana, Ali Musjid, and the Kabul River; to pastoral scenes around Nowshera, street scenes in Peshawar city, and panoramic views of the Peshawar Valley, to views from India, including the Jhelum and Liddar valleys, Srinagar, lower Himals, Harabal waterfall, Shalimar, and the Taj Mahal in Agra, to images of Waziristan and the Khyber railway. The sizes of the mounted prints range from 8.25"x5.75" to 11.25"x9", along with some panoramic prints. Acquired as part of the Archive of Documentary Arts.

The forty color inkjet photographs in this collection were taken by Lauren Henkin in May 2015 in and around Hale County, Alabama, part of the Alabama and Mississippi "Black Belt." The prints (17x22 inches) form part of a body of work titled "What's Lost is Found." Subjects include rural inhabitants, white and black; residences of all kinds, including many interiors; church exteriors and interiors; and rural and wooded landscapes, As part of the photographer's intent to capture the spirituality she perceived in the place and its people, captions for each image are taken from biblical verses. Collection includes five sheets with detailed captions and locations for each image. The Black Belt region is noted for its black topsoil, cotton plantations, the legacy of slavery, civil rights history, and photographic history: Walker Evans, Gordon Parks, and William Christenberry both produced some of their most well-known work in these same places. Will Grossman was a 20th century documentary photographer based in Durham, North Carolina. The 80 black-and-white images in the collection chiefly document Durham County and the city of Durham in the 1970s. There are also 488 negatives, as well as a set of 16 inkjet exhibition prints and an exhibit poster from 2006. Grossman's subjects include barns and rural landscapes; houses and churches; tobacco warehouses, a cigarette factory, and other industrial buildings; tobacco workers and other portraits of individuals, including many African Americans; scenes along the Eno River; and the Durham County Fair. A few images are from Orange County, N.C. Acquired as part of the Archive of Documentary Arts at Duke University.

Ralph Gibson is an American photographer based in New York, N.Y. Collection consists of 208 photographs taken by Gibson in 2019, and publication materials for the corresponding photobook, Sacred Land: Israel before and after time (2020). In addition to the 188 small single-image printer's proof prints, there are 20 large diptych prints, in which juxtaposed color and black-and-white images explore the nature of Israel and surrounding regions of Galilee, Jordan, and Palestine, through contemporary and ancient landscapes, architecture, city and country scenes, and portraits of a wide variety of people. The Center for Documentary Studies was established at Duke University in Durham, N.C. for the study of the documentary process. The collection contains 51 black-and-white and color photographs, chiefly 11x14 and 16x20 inches, that were selected by CDS staff from portfolios published in DoubleTake magazine or by DoubleTake books from 1995 to 1997, and were exhibited at the CDS galleries. Many of the images were taken in the southern United States, but there are also scenes from California, Illinois, Massachusetts, and Pennsylvania, and from countries such as Mexico, Vietnam and Ireland. Some images are dated as early as 1906 and 1940. Acquired as part of the Archive of Documentary Arts at Duke University.

Dugan: To Survive on this Shore: Photographs of Transgender and Gender Non-Conforming Older Adults (2013-2017); A Moment Collected: Photographs at the Harvard Art Museum (2006-2008); and Look At Me Like You Love Me (2020-2021). Nearly all the images are portraits ranging from staff at the Harvard Art Museum, one of Dugan's earliest projects, to gender non-conforming people, gay men and women, and transgender people. Collection consists of two documentary photography series taken in India by Melanie Dornier. "Mahila Thana: All Women Police Station" is comprised of 56 color digital photographs, taken in 2016, recording daily life inside the walls of the All Women Police Station of Gurugram, Haryana. The images convey the human impacts of woman-specific crimes and social justice, and the role of the police station and its female officers as a safe haven for distressed and abused women. The 54 color digital prints in "Punch My Face: Women's Boxing in India" document the daily life and experiences of Meena Kumari, a wife, mother, daughter, police officer, and boxer, 2013-2016. All prints measure 11 3/4 x 8 inches. Acquired as part of the Archive of Documentary Arts and the Sallie Bingham Center for Women's History and Culture at Duke University.

The U.S. Farm Security Administration (FSA) was formed in 1937 as part of social and economic reforms following the Great Depression. Collection comprises 18 color photographs taken from 1939 to 1942 by FSA photographers Jack Delano (8 prints), Russell Lee (7) and Marion Post Wolcott (3). Between 1937 and 1946, FSA/OWI photographers created over 175,000 black-and-white images, and only about 1600 color images using Kodachrome chromogenic film. Subjects in this collection are diverse and include sawmills in Georgia and Maine; a wheat field in Washington State, socializing at a rural fair in Pie Town, New Mexico; tobacco cultivation and a federal housing project in Puerto Rico; and a group of African Americans fishing near a cotton plantation in Mississippi. The prints are sized 10x13 and 11x14 inches, and were created in the 1980s by photograph collector Tennyson Schad using the dye transfer process. Indian-born professional photographer active in the last half of the 19th century; died in 1905. Collection of 51 large albumen and gelatin silver photographs mounted on mat board, taken by professional photographer Raja Deen Dayal, which offer insights into the culture, history, and environment of India in the last decades of the nineteenth century and early twentieth century. The prints range in size from 5x8" to 9x11", and document the 1903 visit of Duke and Duchess of Connaught, which includes marshalling of troops and parades, various archaeological sites, monuments, and natural vistas. Images are arranged by print number, some of which are original and some assigned by the dealer (in brackets). Acquired as part of the Archive of Documentary Arts at Duke University.

Collection comprises 464 original 4x6 inch color snapshots, 23 13x19 inch color inkjet exhibit prints; roll negatives; and text panels for the exhibit, "Photographs by Iraqi Civilians, 2004." The images are a result of a project, "Iraq From Within," coordinated by the North Carolina-based Daylight Community Arts Foundation, which encouraged Iraqi civilians to document through photographs and captions a point of view unavailable to the foreign press. The original color snapshots, taken by men and women chiefly in Baghdad and Fallujah, show families at home and in their neighborhoods, various workplaces, and scenes of wartime destruction. Taken as a whole, the collection conveys the impacts on men, women, and children of the 2003 U.S. invasion and occupation of Iraq. Project themes and subjects in this collection range widely: views of the city of Berlin, the destruction of the Berlin Wall and the reunification of Germany in 1990; mall culture and the social impacts of urban decay in Poughkeepsie, New York State, 1980s; wedding ceremonies and rituals of straight and transgender people, mid-1980s; Latino youth and in-line skating culture in the Williamsburg neighborhood of Brooklyn, New York, mid-1990s-2017; Cambodian kickboxing culture, 2004; the relationship between human story-telling, memory, and landscapes, 2000-2002; and gay pride marches and demonstrations in New York City, 1985-2019. The photographs of Cedric N. Chatterley span the years 1983-2013, and were created throughout his career as a documentary photographer, beginning with his MFA thesis project on religious experience in the U.S. The photographs are primarily black-and-white prints ranging in size from 8x10 to 18x24 inches. The most prominent themes in Chatterley's work are labor, community, and religious expression. He has photographed chicken slaughterhouse workers in Maine; Cambodian immigrants in North Carolina; David "Honeyboy" Edwards and other Southern blues musicians in Mississippi and on tour; a substance abusers' rehabilitation community in Durham, N.C.; tornado survivors in South Dakota; an abandoned religious theme park in Connecticut; and sheep rancher Judith Fae "Pachy" Burns in Montana. Some of his documentary work also includes oral history interviews. There are also several recordings of interviews with Chatterley, where he speaks about his work as a documentary photographer, and a book by Barbara Lau containing his photographs of Cambodian immigrants. These thirty-three color inkjet portraits are from the body of work "Black Picket Fences" by Akea Brionne Brown, and explore the life of middle-class African Americans in the suburbs of Baltimore, Maryland. Taken in part to confront stereotypes of African American neighborhoods and majority black American cities as dangerous and violent, the images chiefly portray family groups and individuals in interiors of homes and in outside environments such as front yards. The majority of the prints measure 19 3/8 x 24 inches. This work received the 2018 ADA Award for Documentarians of Color. Acquired as part of the Archive of Documentary Arts at Duke University.

Collection comprises two portfolios by documentary photographer Rachel Boillot: "Después del dia: Migrant Farmworkers in North Carolina," portraits of farmworkers from across the state of North Carolina, their families, and their residences, and a few shots of workers in the field; and "Moon Shine," portraits of traditional musicians and their families from the eastern Tennessee Cumberland Mountains region, along with images of their residences, interior settings, towns, and natural landscapes. The "Después del dia" work forms part of the multi-artist project "Where we live: a North Carolina portrait." Max Belcher (1944- ) is an American-born photographer with interests in portraiture, vernacular architecture, and racial and immigrant identity. This collection of his work comprises black-and-white and color contact sheets, study prints, and fine prints of Belcher's projects based in Canada, Liberia, the Dominican Republic, Israel, Vietnam, and the United States, in particular New York City, Massachusetts, and the Southern States. Collection comprises 25 black-and-white and 48 color photographs taken from 2001 to 2012 by Marion Belanger, documenting the intersection of natural and human-built environments. Belanger's series "Everglades," taken in Florida between 2001-2004, presents images of wildlife and natural landscapes affected by the impacts of tourism, agriculture, migrant worker housing, construction, and activities of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and the U.S. Army. Her portfolio "Rift/Fault," shot between 2006-2012, documents zones in California and Iceland where the San Andreas Fault and the Mid-Atlantic Rift exist - visibly or invisibly - alongside human environments; subjects in this series include housing developments, monitoring stations, geologic features and landscapes, coastal roads, and geothermal structures such as greenhouses. The digital inkjet prints in both series measure 13 or 13 1/2 x16 inches. Both projects were published as photobooks (2009 and 2012, respectively). There are also proofs, primarily 3x5 machine proofs and 8x10 proofs of images selected as firsts, alternates, and seconds for the book; and related materials. Also included is a dummy of the book.

The Full Frame Documentary Film Festival is the largest film festival in the United States entirely devoted to documentary film. Originally the DoubleTake Documentary Film Festival, it is an international event dedicated to the theatrical exhibition of non-fiction cinema, held annually since 1998 in downtown Durham, North Carolina. Typically, more than 100 films are screened, along with discussions, panels, and workshops fostering conversation between filmmakers, film professionals and the public. The Full Frame Archive was created in 2007, as a partnership between Duke University and Full Frame. The Full Frame Archive Film Collection comprises preservation masters of documentary films that won awards at the Full Frame Film Festival between 1998 and 2012. Formats include 35mm film, 16mm film, Digital Betacam cassette, HDCAM cassette, Betacam SP cassette, and DVD. In addition, there is a complete set of festival program books. The films vary widely in topic and style, with a predominant emphasis on human rights issues; all of the films deal with social issues in one way or another. The collection is organized chronologically, by festival year, and acquisitions are ongoing.

Shot during fifteen-day Amtrak train excursions, "In Search of Great Men" by photographer McNair Evans combines original photography with first-person, passenger-written accounts in an exploration of contemporary American culture and the people traveling on the Amtrak trains that criss-cross the United States. The photographic body of work consists of 30 large color digital prints, all sized 24x29 inches, featuring portraits of travelers and settings in train stations and passenger cars. The color prints are accompanied by a reproduction of a handmade photonarrative journal of 156 pages with 76 4x5 inch inkjet photographs, paired with comments and journal entries by the photographer, and reproductions of handwritten commentary by the passengers, who reflect on their lives and circumstances, including long-distance family relationships and problems with drug abuse. Christopher Sims is a documentary photographer from Atlanta, Georgia, currently on the faculty at Duke University, Durham, N.C. The 71 color digital photographs in this collection appear in his book, The Pretend Village: Inside the U.S. Military Training Grounds (2021). The photographs were taken by Sims from 2005-2018 at fictitious Iraqi and Afghan villages constructed on U.S. Army bases in remote areas of North Carolina and Louisiana, and in Death Valley, California. Images taken between military training exercises show actors, many of them real-life immigrant Afghans and Iraqis, playing police officers, doctors, craftspeople, farmers, and café owners. Images taken during training include American soldiers in motion or at rest, fictional civilians and insurgents, and simulations of dead or wounded soldiers and civilians. Other images are of buildings, streets, fake interiors, props, rubble, and graffiti and murals. The inkjet prints measure 17x22 inches. Collection contains two letters Susan B. Anthony wrote on National American Woman Suffrage Association letterhead in February 1905 to Minnie C. Rodey, who was chair of the "Women's Club" in Albuquerque, New Mexico. In the letters, Anthony described informational material she will be sending Rodey, including a history of woman suffrage. In addition, she recommended a process by which the territory would vote on the issue of woman's suffrage before it acquiring statehood, since she considered the legislature and governor more likely to pass it than the general male voters in the state. She added, "... I read yesterday of the number of Indians and Mexicans and negroes that were in the territories. It is amazing that people want to make a state out of a territory composed of a majority of what we should term 'incompetents' Voting should be confined to intelligent beings." She also inquired of mutual friends and recommends her relatives who are visiting Albuquerque.

Anthony family of Burlington (Guilford Co.), N.C. Collection primarily comprises 32 albumen photographs and one tintype (circa 1861-1954 and undated), most of which are accompanied by identifying information and feature formal portraits. Nineteen of the photographs represent Newlin or Anthony family members. Among the other thirteen, five are images of the Letterboat, Perry, and Holt families; four are unidentified images of World War I soldiers, possibly associates of Joseph Jonathan Newlin; and one is a print of evangelist "Cyclone Mac." The tintype is of an unidentified Confederate soldier, possibly James Rieh, whose letter of 12 May 1861 is in the collection. Other materials include John Anthony's bank account book (1906-1907); his personal account book (1892-1922), with entries for housekeeping and farm expenses and income; and a commonplace book for M. G. Newell (1938?). In addition, there are a few letters (1910-1958), clippings (1950-1974), and printed materials (1922-1961).

Jesse Pyrant Andrews is an American photographer based in rural southern Virginia. Collection comprises 310 black-and-white photographs and 50 oral history interviews by photographer Jesse Pyrant Andrews, documenting rural and small-town life in the Piedmont region of Virginia and North Carolina. Major themes center on the landscapes and people of the region; tobacco cultivation; the lives of farmers, war veterans, small business owners, and laid-off workers; local architecture and historic sites; traditional crafts and music; and new patterns of economics and society in rural Virginia. Andrews's Veterans Project has become a larger focus over the years; it now comprises over 30 portraits and associated audio interviews, chiefly with veterans of the Vietnam and Gulf Wars. Parker Anderson (1964-) is an author of nonfiction and dramatic works on Arizona history. The Parker Anderson collection of conspiracy theory research consists of materials documenting the diffusion of conspiracy theories by right-wing populist publishers and personalities in the United States since the 1960s, with emphasis on the period between the late 1980s and the early 2000s. The dominant focus is on "new world order" conspiracy theories informed by strands of evangelicalism, antisemitism, white supremacy, Catholicism, constitutionalism, and libertarianism. The majority of the collection consists of conspiracy theory literature produced in varied formats: books; booklets; pamphlets; serial publications; mail catalogs and promotional ephemera; films and other video recordings on VHS and DVD; audio recordings of lectures and speeches on cassette and CD; and web publications. The Charles Roberts Anderson Papers span the dates 1806-1993 and document his active career as professor of American literature at Duke University and Johns Hopkins University. Included are research materials on the intellectual life of Charleston, S.C., and on American literary figures such as Paul Hamilton Hayne, Emily Dickinson, Henry James, Sidney Lanier (to whom Anderson was related), Herman Melville, Henry David Thoreau, and others. Additional material includes correspondence and files on Anderson's publications; lectures and files related to teaching; travel diaries and keepsakes; and other papers related to his family history and academic career. Copies of correspondence and other documents by Anderson's research subjects, particularly Hayne, detail elements of life in the South in the nineteenth century. In addition, material in this collection chronicles the academic life of Anderson and provides insight into the state of literary scholarship and publishing in the mid-twentieth century. Early dates usually reflect the dates of the content of original material photocopied by Anderson in the course of his research. Acquired as part of the Jay B. Collection comprises five brief essays Amerine wrote to attack advances in Civil Rights made during the 1950s, noting that members of the white race were becoming second-class citizens because of the legislative work of the federal government and the Supreme Court, along with 3 letters supporting his writing. Other topics include Christianity, Communism, and foreign aid. There are two versions of "An Essay on Crackpotism." The majority of the essays feature manuscript corrections made in ink. There are also three letters written to Amerine, dated 1960 and written by local officials who endorsed his manuscript, THE FORCES OF DARKNESS, including Judge Walter P. Jones of the 15th Judicial Circuit of Alabama; MacDonald Gallion, State Attorney General; and George Platt Waller, a retired U.S. Foreign Service officer. Copies of these three letters have been attached the longer version of "An Essay on Crackpotism." One essay has a mailing envelope attached. Several of the items have been stamped with messages such as "Remember Little Rock," or "Warning! This book should be left to our posterity. Thousands of children are even now being led astray. The Reds are back of it."

Video recording consists of a slide show of still images chiefly taken at annual meetings of the American Ophthalmological Society, most of which were and still are held at The Homestead Resort in Hot Springs, Virginia. Though the series begins with historical images, the first of which is a panoramic print of the 1919 conference attendees, most date from the 1950s through 1993, and are mostly in color. Subjects typically include scenes from the meetings, candid portraits of individuals attending the meeting and enjoying recreational activities, and the locations and grounds where the meetings were held. A credit line bears the name M. N. Luxenberg, Malcom (Mike) N. Luxenberg, ophthalmologist in Augusta, Georgia, Past President of AOS, and Professor and Chair for Ophthalmology for Augusta University. The American Newspaper Repository was founded in 1999 as a 501(c)(3) non-profit corporation in order to save a unique collection of original newspapers that would otherwise have been destroyed or dispersed, and to preserve and make available these landmarks of American publishing. Nicholson Baker, author of numerous fiction and nonfiction works, including writings on libraries, founded and served as director of the Repository in conjunction with research for his 2001 release, Double Fold: Libraries and the Assault on Paper. The collection consists of approximately five thousand newspaper volumes (plus several thousand unbound newspapers), most of which came, directly or indirectly, from the British Library. There are long runs of major domestic newspapers as well as many foreign language and immigrant papers, such as the Yiddish Forward, the Irish World, and the Greek Atlantis, trade journals, Communist papers such as the Daily Worker, and other political papers. Many of these runs apparently exist nowhere else in the original format.

The American Literary Manuscripts Records (accession #5-6-81) (8,098 items, 10.8 lf; dated 1930-1979) documents the process by which the guide was created. It contains the correspondence of J. A. Robbins with each of his editors for each region of the United States (the Regional Chairmen), copies of the directives sent to participating libraries, copies of the master list of names to be checked, minutes of editorial board meetings, descriptions of the project, a proposal for a computerized updating of the census of library holdings of American literary manuscripts, negotiations with the publisher, grant requests, and reports. The correspondence between Midwest Regional Chairman, George Hendrick, and his Regional Associates is included in order to demonstrate how the project operated. The questionnaires returned by the libraries in that region are included. There are also ten printouts, included as a random sampling of printouts required. Acquired as part of the Jay B. Hubbell Center for American Literary Historiography.

Collection consists of a set of sixty-six commercially produced, hand-colored lantern slides, featuring photographic images taken in the early 20th century in areas of modern-day Israel, Palestine, Jordan, Lebanon, and Syria. Also includes an original list of titles and a slide projector. The slides were sold in sets by the American Colony Stores, the commercial department of a missionary community based in Jerusalem. The landscapes and scenes were intended to illustrate biblical sites, or to remind the viewer of well-known biblical passages, but a few also depict other types of archaeological sites. The slides measure 4 x 3.5 inches. Locations include but are not limited to: the city of Jaffa (Tel Aviv); Sea of Galilee; Jerusalem; Bethlehem; Mount of Temptation (identified with Mount Quarantania); Jericho; Jordan River; Mount Hermon; Bethsaida; Mount of Olives; Emmaus (El- Kubebeh); the mosaic floor at Beit Jibrin; River Abana (El-Barada); Tyre; and the Temple of Sethos. There are also two glass slides with maps of ancient Middle East and Palestine. Five of the slides are damaged and are filed at the end of the collection. The collection is accompanied by a lantern slide projector and by an original list of slide titles. Acquired by the Archive of Documentary Arts at Duke University.

The records of the American Civil Liberties Union of North Carolina (ACLU of NC or ACLU-NC) date mainly from the 1960s-2010s and is ongoing. The collection is organized into the following series: ACLU Historical Files, Executive Director Office Files, Legal Program, Audiovisual Material, Print Material, Accession 2013-0209, Web Content, and Accession 2025-0020. Many files focus on the investigation and prosecution of cases related to civil rights, public education relating to civil liberties, and lobbying for civil liberties and human rights. Materials include correspondence files from the Executive Director's office and other unions in the ACLU of NC; thousands of case files; administrative files on cases, operations, and attorney's activities; lobbying and subject files; and printed materials and other records relating to organizational publications, outreach, and public education activities. The Chapel Hill-Carrboro (CHC) Civil Liberties Union was established as a chapter of the North Carolina Civil Liberties Union (NCCLU, now known as ALCU of NC) in September 1971. Its activities have focused on fundraising efforts, education, and outreach related to civil liberties particularly, freedom of speech, separation of church and state, gun control, voting, drug testing, and other issues. Collection contains administrative materials created and collected by the Board of Directors and include meeting minutes, correspondence, reports, financial statements, fundraising and event files, policy guides, briefs, clippings, and other assorted materials spanning 1967-1996. Also included is the newsletter Civil Liberties News, later called Liberty, that provides an overview of activities from different state chapters including the CHC chapter. The American Catalin Corporation was founded in New York, N.Y., in 1927; it developed the light-colored, transparent, filler-free Bakelite resin in a wide range of colors. Bakelite is the first synthetic plastic, developed by Dr. Leo Baekeland between 1907 and 1909. American Catalin Corporation used its form of the resin for costume jewelry, fashion accessories, radios, and other products. By 1942, the company suspended its manufacture of jewelry and cast items to concentrate on wartime production. After the war, petroleum-based plastics gained favor. Collection comprises a salesman's sample book in a black leather album used to provide a visual guide for the company's products. The album contains primarily 34 black-and-white 8x10 photographs (8 photographs are laid in, all but two are linen backed, those not laid-in are stamped on the back with "Johnston & Tunick Commercial Photographers"), as well as 17 typeset pages containing inter-office memos, sales tips, information regarding the company's competition, and customer testimonials. Several of the memos are written to the attention of D. J. Kelly, who was the salesman for whom the sample book was prepared. There is also a two-page key to the main group of 19 photographs, identifying the Bakelite products in each photograph, as well as the item's final producer. Seven of the laid-in photographs show the corporation's factory, including three of factory workers on the job. The purpose of the American Association of University Professors (AAUP) is to advance academic freedom and shared governance, to define fundamental professional values and standards for higher education, and to ensure higher education's contribution to the common good. The collection includes correspondence, reports, proceedings, memoranda, and other materials of the American Association of University Professors from the period when Duke University faculty member William T. Laprade was chairman of its Committee A on Academic Freedom and Tenure (1937-1942, 1948-1953), and president (1942-1943). A sample of the folders shows material concerning academic freedom cases, dismissals, quality of educational support and other matters of concern to the organization's membership. English.

The photographs and papers of documentarian Rob Amberg span the years 1975-2009. The gelatin silver prints and pigmented inkjet color prints in the collection represent three bodies of work: The New Road: I-26 and the Footprints of Progress; The Sodom Laurel Album; and The Vanishing Culture of Agriculture. Amberg focuses primarily on the social life and customs of the rural South, especially in the mountains of his home state of North Carolina. Images range from landscape shots taken before and during construction of an interstate highway in the N.C. mountains, to portraits of individuals and families affected by the changes in rural culture. Images also depict agricultural activies such as tobacco cultivation and dairy cattle farming, as well as work in the poultry industry. He has a special concern for documenting the way in which industrial and economic progress seems to be erasing many aspects of rural culture at the turn of the twenty-first century. Amberg's papers account for the rest of the collection and are organized into five series: Correspondence, Printed Materials, Subject Files, and Writings and Research, and Audio. Acquired as part of the Archives of Documentary Arts at Duke University.

A key supporter of Trinity College (Randolph County, N.C), he served as chairman of the Board of Trustees and as a member of the Committee of Management, which ran the school from 1884 to 1887. Papers contain letters from J. S. Carr and J. A. Gray concerning the uncertain financial state of Trinity College (Randolph County, N.C.). Also included are claims, letters of recommendation, a student petition regarding food vendors, and reports of the Committee of Management. English.
