Abstract Or Scope: Collection contains original caricatures, original and drafts drawings, and select magazine issues that critique political decisions, parties, cultural and social issues, world affairs, economics, womens' rights, equality, foreign policies, World War II, and more in 20th century Turkey. Artists such as Ramiz Gökçe, Memduh, Olgaç, and many more are represented in this collection. There are also representative caricature journals, e.g., Mizah, Akbaba, Karikatür, and Amcabey.

Abstract Or Scope: The collection consists of printed materials and ephemera documenting the 2018 presidential election and 2019 municipality elections in Turkey. Represented in the collection are the major parties, including the Justice and Development Party (AKP), Peoples' Democratic Party (HDP), Republican People's Party (CHP), Nationalist Movement Party (MDP), Felicity Party (Saadet), Patriotic Party (Vatan), and Iyi Party (Iyi). Abstract Or Scope: Collection comprises 176 Turkish political posters, including three duplicates. There are seven series of posters: Korean War, NATO, Historical significance, Commemoration of Ottoman historical figures, Republican-era historical figures, Leftist, and Presidency of the Turkish Republic. In the first, sixteen posters extoll the achievements of the Turkish Armed Forces command or Turkish Brigade in the Korean War between November 1950 and July 1953. In the second series, one poster represents Turkey's relationship to North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), and another reflects the naval and air force maneuvers of NATO's Southern Command, Greece, and Turkey at Weld Fast in 1953. The third series includes 27 posters that celebrate events of historic national significance and depict international political figures together with Turkish leaders. The fourth series includes four posters that commemorate Ottoman historical figures, including admiral Barbaros Hayrettin, and sultans Mehmet V, Mehmed II, and Selim I. The fifth series includes 14 posters of Repulican-era historical figures, including portraits of World War II generals and political figures. The sixth series contains 63 leftist political posters with political slogans, as well as calls for meetings and demonstrations; most of them date from the second half of the 1970's. The seventh series contains 50 posters issued by the Presidency of the Turkish Republic regarding the failed coup attempt of 15 July 2016.

Korean War Series, 1950-1953

Sixteen posters, including 2 duplicates, extoll the achievements of the Turkish Armed Forces command or Turkish Brigade in the Korean War between November 1950 and July 1953. These posters show battle scenes and portraits of Brigadier General Tahzin Yazıcı and assistant Brigade commander Celâl Dora. Another shows an American officer, General Walker, decorating Yazıcı with the Silver Star. Ten of these posters are signed by graphic artists, including M. Işık, Cemal Baki, M. Baki, and Mehmet Tekdal; the remainder are unsigned.

Viscountess Emily Anne Beaufort Smyth Strangford Journal, 1859-1860

Abstract Or Scope: Author of travel books on the Near East. Married 8th Viscount Strangford in 1862. Chiefly a journal of 141 pages (1859 Apr. 10-1860 July 7) describing a trip to Turkey and Lebanon, Apr.-Sept. 1859, and to Greece, May-July 1860. Beginning in Smyrna, Viscountess Strangford travelled to Rhodes, Mersin, Tripoli, Beirut, Baalbek, Athens, Attica, Pentelicus, Constantinople, and Belgrade. She described the locales, social life and customs of the Lebanese, a Druze wedding, and fighting between the Druzes and Christians. Included are drawings and other sheets laid in, including one in French, possibly by Marius Fontane. Also includes an albumen print of Viscountess Strangford.

Collection comprises manuscript notes (61 pages) maintained by M. Almina Stratton for her class in Materia Medica, entitled "Lectures on Materia Medica By Prof. Roerig, delivered in the Female Medical College In the session of 1858-9." Contains an additional 8 pages of her rules and advice for young ladies regarding gentlemen callers, proper behavior, and letter writing.

Abstract Or Scope: John Willis created these six composite color images to articulate and consider the connections between photographic portraits taken by the Khmer Rouge of young people in Tuol Sleng prison in Phnom Penh, where an estimated 14,000-20,000 victims were executed from about 1975-1979, and images of deteriorating mural frescoes at the Emperor's Palace, also in Phnom Penh. The portraits are said to be of prison workers, and were exhibited in 2008 at the prison, now a genocide museum. Five of the historical photographs are portraits; the sixth shows a group of what appears to be Khmer Rouge soldiers in uniform. The photographer's images show that the original photographs on exhibit were defaced with graffiti and other marks by visitors to the museum. The neglected Emperor's Palace frescoes, whose images flank the victim's portraits in Willis' work, depict scenes from the Cambodian epic poem, the Reamker, which speaks to human issues of love, revenge, loyalty, and trust. The color inkjet prints were created from 2009 to 2011. Acquired as part of the Archive of Documentary Arts at Duke University.
